78 the high today...with sunny skie.

YMCA OFFICIALS were in Maquoketa last night at City Hall to talk about their organization. About 15 local citizens were in attendance and after discussion, it was agreed that a free feasibility study by the YMCA would be a good idea, to determine if local residents of Maquoketa would use a YMCA in Maquoketa. There is one in Clinton and Dubuque.

The Jackson County Democratic Party called a special convention last night and nominated Jo-Ell Deppe of Andrew as a candidate for Jackson County Auditor, to oppose Republican Incumbent, Mike Cotton in November.
Deppe ran four years ago, and was defeated by Cotton. She is a CPA and lives in Andrew.

The parents of a 4-year-old Delmar girl who died in a fire in February have been sentenced to 10 years each in prizon. Judge David Schoenthaler denied requests for probation for Shalene Peterson and her husband, Damon Petersen. The parents cried and apologized for their role in their daughter,Eve's death. In February she was left in her home in Delmar, with a burning candle, while her parents were next door.

The jobless rate in Jackson County in July was down from June, down to 4.8 percent. Last July it was 6.6 percent.

Mark and Catherine Jorgensen Anderson of Minneapolis are parents of a girl born Tuesday in Minneapolis.
Maternal grandparents are Charles and Jeanne Jorgensen of Maquoketa.
