TOM SCHUELLER, MAQUOKETA CITY COUNCILMAN AND BUSINESSMAN DEFEATED JASON HAYNES OF LAMOTTE IN THE DEMOCRATIC PRIMARY ELECTION YESTERDAY, 1,056 TO 560. ABOUT 14% OF ELIGIBLE VOTERS WENT TO THE POLLS. SCHUELLER WAS ENDORSED BY RETIRING ST. REP. BOB OSTERHAUS. SCHUELLER WILL NOW OPPOSE REPUBLICAN PAUL CARSTENSEN, MILES CATTLEMEN, IN THE NOVEMBER ELECTION.
CARSTENSEN WAS THE TOP VOTE GETTER YESTERDAY IN A FIELD OF 3 CANDIDATES.
TWO CAR ACCIDENT YESTERDAY MORNING AT CORNER OF PLEASANT AND MAIN. CARS WERE DRIVEN BY VIOLA SAID, 66 AND MARY BURLINGAME, 77, BOTH OF MAQUOKETA AND BOTH WENT BY PRIVATE VEHICLE TO THEIR PHYSICIANS.
AT 6:30 LAST NIGHT, ON THE JOINERVILLE ROAD, NATE CLASEN, AGE 16, OF MAQUKETA LOST CONTROL OF HIS CAR ON THE GRAVEL ROAD AND WENT INTO THE DITCH. NO INJURIES TO HIM OR A PASSENGER WITH HIM. NO DAMAGE TO HIS 1995 HONDA CIVIC. HE WAS CHARGED WITH FAILURE TO MAINTAIN CONTROL.
