WEATHER HAS BEEN THE NEWS OF IOWA THE LAST FEW DAYS. MANY OF YOU HAVE HEARD OF A COUPLE TORNADOS TOUCHING DOWN IN IOWA AND CAUSING LOTS OF DAMAGE IN A COUPLE SMALL TOWNS.
SEVENTEEN COUNTIES ARE SEEKING FEDERAL DISASTER HELP, INCLUDING JONES COUNTY, WHERE A COUPLE TORNADOS WERE SIGHTED. FLOODING IS ALSO A PROBLEM IN SOME AREAS. AND MORE HEAVY RAIN IS IN THE FORECAST FOR TONIGHT. THE MAQUOKETA RIVER IS UP, BUT NO PROBLEM AT THIS TIME. HERE IN MAQUOKETA, WE HAD NO REAL BAD WEATHER, JUST A LOT OF RAIN AND A LITTLE HAIL NORTH OF TOWN ALONG WITH 2 OR 3 INCHES OF RAIN. GRASS IS GROWING FAST...MOWING IS DONE EVERY FEW DAYS BY MOST CITIZENS. BUT..LOOKS LIKE WE HAVE SOME NICE WEATHER COMING BY MIDWEEK AND HOPEFULLY LASTING FOR A FEW DAYS.
ON THE POLICE BLOTTER, BRAD DEERY MOTORS HAD TWO VEHICLES KEYED THURSDAY NIGHT AND ARDAN BEHRENS ON GRANT STREET REPORTED HIS VEHICLE DAMAGED BY KEYING, WITH DAMAGE ESTIMATED AT $2,000. AND THERE WERE SEVERAL HOMES HIT BY PAINTBALLS LAST NIGHT. ONE PERSON, MARGARET CURRIE, REPORTED SHE WAS HIT IN THE LEG WHEN SOMEONE SHOT A PAINTBALL FROM A VEHICLE AS IT WAS DRIVING PAST HER.
JACK D. DREESEN, AGE 86, OF WELAKA, FLORIDA, AND FORMERLY OF MAQUOKETA, DIED AT LAKESIDE HOSPICE IN FLORIDA MAY 22ND AFTER A SHORT ILLNESS. HE WAS A PHOTOGRAPHER IN MAQUOKETA IN THE 40'S AND 50'S AND ALSO RAN AT DIFFERENT TIMES, THE VFW CLUB, THE CLUB CAFE, AND THE TANGO ALL IN MAQUOKETA. HE IS SURVIVED BY A SON, JACK AND DAUGHTER LYNN NISSEN, BOTH IN MAQUOKETA, ALSO 3 STEPSONS, 12 GRANDCHILDREN AND A SISTER IN CLINTON.
THE MAQUOKETA GIRLS GOLF TEAM IS HEADING TO THE STATE TOURNAMENT. TODAY, THE CARDINALS WON THE CLASS 3-A REGIONAL MEET AT WEST LIBERTY, WITH A TEAM SCORE OF 341, 27 STROKES BETTER THAN SECOND PLACE KEOKUK. BROOKE DAVIS SHOT AN 81 AND WAS RUNNERUP MEDALIST.
HER TWIN SISTER SHOT AN 84 AND WAS 4TH OVERALL. SISTER JORDAN DAVIS HAD AN 87. AND NIKKI GOODALL ROUNDED OUT THE MAQUOKETA SCORING WITH AN 89. GOODALL WENT TO STATE INDIVIDUALLY LAST YEAR AND AFTER A YEAR'S ABSENCE, THE ENTIRE TEAM WILL NOW PLAY IN THE STATE MEET, TUESDAY, JUNE 1ST, AT THE OTTER CREEK COURSE IN ANKENY. THEY'LL ALSO PLAY ANOTHER 18 HOLES ON JUNE 2ND AT THE JESTER PARK COURSE NEAR GRIMES. CONGRATULATIONS TO COACH TERI TAYLOR AND THE MAQUOKETA GIRLS GOLF TEAM, GOING TO THE STATE TOURNAMENT NEXT WEEK.
THE STOCK CAR RACES STARTED ON TIME SATURDAY NIGHT, BUT JUST AS THEY WERE STARTING
THE "FEATURES", RAIN STARTED AND THE REST OF THE NIGHT'S RACES WERE CALLED OFF.
SCHOOL BOARD MEETING TONIGHT IN MAQUOKETA.
AT THE MOVIES, "SHREK 2" DID VERY GOOD IN MAQUOKETA THIS WEEKEND, JUST AS IT DID NATIONWIDE. THE VOY 1, LARGEST THEATRE, HAD A SELL-OUT BOTH SATURDAY AND SUNDAY
AFTERNOON.
