THE UNEMPLOYMENT RATE FOR JACKSON COUNTY IN APRIL WAS 6.9 PERCENT, DOWN FROM 7.8 IN MARCH. A YEAR AGO, APRIL, IT WAS 8.3.

STORE...A BIG CHAIN HERE IN IOWA. THEY HOPE TO OPEN, IN THE FORMER GASSER TRUE VALUE BUILDING, IN LATE JULY.

LORETTA KNICKREHM, 67, OF MAQUOKETA, DIED MONDAY AT HER HOME. SHE IS SURVIVED BY HER HUSBAND, RALPH, 5 DAUGHTERS AND 3 SONS...AND 20 GRANDCHILDREN.

THREE OTHER RECENT DEATHS. JOE MCPHEARSON, AGE 57 OF MAQUOKETA....HAZEL SACKMAN, 97, OF MAQUOKETA AND ARNOLD KUNDE, AGE 85,ALSO FROM MAQUOKETA.

OVER $22,000 HAS BEEN DONATED TO THE SHERIFF'S DEPARTMENT FOR THE START-UP OF A NEW K-9 UNIT. TWO BIG CONTRIBUTORS WERE ALLIANCE PIPELINE, WITH A BIG OFFICE HERE IN MAQUOKETA ($7,000) AND A LADY IN DUBUQUE ($6,000). THE DOG WILL ARRIVE IN MAQUOKETA JUNE 26TH. DEPUTY MIKE PETERS WILL HANDLE THE DOG. TO BEGIN....HE WILL ATTEND A 5-WEEK SCHOOL BEGINNING JULY 4TH.

LONGTIME MAQUOKETA DENTIST, DR. DON ROEDER, HAS ANNOUNCED HE WILL RETIRE JUNE 1ST, AFTER 44 YEARS AS A DENTIST.

ISLA JOHNSTON OF MAQUOKETA, WILL BE 99 THIS SATURDAY. SHE IS A RESIDENT NOW AT CLOVER RIDGE. WAS A TEACHER FOR 32 YEARS, INCLUDING 20 AT BRIGG'S ELEMENTARY IN MAQUOKETA.
