MONDAY WAS HOT...TODAY IT IS HOT....6/100 OF AN INCH OF RAIN AROUND MIDNIGHT LAST NIGHT AND A LITTLE SHOWER AROUND 8 THIS MORNING.
TOMORROW AND THURSDAY WILL STILL BE HOT, BUT LOOKS LIKE THE WEEKEND, FRIDAY THRU MONDAY, LABOR DAY, WILL BE MUCH COOLER.
THERE WAS LOTS OF WIND DAMAGE LAST NIGHT IN CEDAR RAPIDS. ALL SCHOOLS ARE AGAIN HAVING EARLY OUT TODAY.

TODAY IS KMAQ'S 45TH BIRTHDAY. KMAQ....AM 1320 ONLY AT THAT TIME....WENT ON THE AIR FOR THE FIRST FULL DAY OF BROADCASTING ON AUGUST 26, 1958. IT WAS A DAYTIME ONLY STATION THEN AND WAS LOCATED UPSTAIRS AT 136 1/2 SOUTH MAIN STREET, ABOVE WHERE THE MAQUOKETA CAFE IS NOW LOCATED. IT HAD A LONG, LONG STAIRWAY TO THE TOP. KMAQ-FM STARTED IN 1967. IN 1970, KMAQ WAS FORCED TO MOVE BECAUSE OF A NEARBY FIRE AND RE-LOCATED TO OUR PRESENT LOCATION, 129 N. MAIN STREET. THE STATION WAS ORIGINALLY OWNED BY 3 MEN FROM WISCONSIN. ONE, NATE GOETZ, IS RETIRED AND RESIDES IN FLORIDA. I BOUGHT THE STATION FROM THE THREE, OCTOBER 1, 1965. THE FIRST MANAGER, BOB BROWN, IS ALSO RETIRED AND LIVES IN FORT ATKINSON, WISCONSIN. THE FIRST NEWS DIRECTOR WAS STAN BARTON AND I DON'T KNOW WHERE HE LIVES NOW. THE FIRST ENGINEER WAS A MAQUOEKTA (FULTON) NATIVE, BROTHER OF RED HENTON, AND HE WAS ALSO THE MORNING ANNOUNCER. HIS NAME WAS RAY SHEIELDS AND HE DIED MANY YEARS AGO, BUT HIS WIFE AND SON STILL LIVE IN ARKANSAS. NOTHING SPECIAL FOR THS ANNIVERSARY, OTHER THAN AN ADVERTISING BUMPER STICKER SALES PROMOTION. IF I'M STILL AROUND IN 5 YEARS, KMAQ WILL HAVE A BIG PARTY (50TH) FOR BOTH ADVERTISERS AND LISTENERS.

ROBERT ''Bob" ARNESON, AGE 73, OF NEVADA AND FORMERLY OF MAQUOKETA, DIED LAST THURSDAY AT A HOSPICE HOUSE IN AMES, FOLLOWING A SHORT BATTLE WITH ACUTE LUKEMIA. HE WORKED FOR NORTHWESTERN BELL TELEPHONE IN MAQUOKETA FOR MANY YEARS. IN THE EARLY DAYS OF KMAQ, WHENEVER WE HAD A PROBLEM, BOB, OR I.S. CASIDY WERE JUST A PHONE CALL AWAY. HE IS SURVIVED BY HIS WIFE, BOBBIE.... A DAUGHTER,
REBECCA SPAETE OF NEVADA....AND TWO SONS, BRUCE OF MESA AND BILL OF OMAHA, PLUS SIX GRANDCHILDREN AND FOUR GREAT GRANDCHILDREN.

THE CITY OF MAQUOKETA HAS JOINED WITH A DUBUQUE ORGANIZATION TO FORM A COALAITION FOR ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT. THE STATE OF IOWA HAS ENCOURAGED COMMUNITIES TO FORM REGIONAL ALLIANCES. DELAWARE COUNTY MAY ALSO JOIN IN WITH JACKSON AND DUBUQUE.
COUNCILMAN STEVE FLYNN SAID THE STATE OF IOWA IS MOVING TOWARD A REGIONALIZED CONCEPT FOR ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT.

MAQUOKETA POLICE INVESTIGATED TWO ACCIDENTS MONDAY, NEITHER RESULTED IN INJURIES. DENNIS DODDS, AGE 52 OF MAQUOKETA AND REX FELTEN, AGE 71, OF MAQUOKETA, WERE IN ONE .....AND LESLIE SPALDING, AGE 17, OF MAQUOKETA AND JENNIFER HANSEN, AGE 26, OF MAQUOKETKA, WERE IN THE OTHER.

NO BIRTHS OR DEATHS.

NICE TURN-OUT FOR THE OPEN HOUSE OF THE NEWLY ENLARGED FIRST LUTHERAN CHURCH OF MAQUOKETA, HELD SUNDAY AFTERNOON.

USUAL SMALL, BUT FAITHFUL, GROUP TO ENJOY THE HARNESS RACES SUNDAY AFTERNOON IN MAQUOKETA. I WATCHED ABOUT HALF AND THEN HAD ANOTHER COMMITTMENT. SAT WITH PAUL AND GERI HAYES, OF MAQUOKETA. THEY HAVE ATTENDED MANY RACES OVER THE YEARS. MANY WON BY H.L. BOWMAN, JUNIOR AND CHUCK WENDEL. PAUL AND GERI WILL BE CELEBRATING THEIR 57TH WEDDING ANNIVERSAY, SEPTEMBER 1ST.
