RON SCHAFER AND PASTOR JEFF DADISMAN WERE ON KMAQ'S "JUST TALK" SHOW
THIS MORNING, APPEARING AS THE "BLUES BROTHERS".    LIKE THE "BLUES BROTHERS" WHO WERE  ON A MISSION FOR GOD,  RON AND PASTOR JEFF, ARE ON A "MISSION FOR GOD".....THE RAISING OF FUNDS FOR THE MAQUOKETA MINISTERIAL ASSOCIATION TO BUY A BUILDING FOR MAQUOKETA'S COMMUNITY CUPBOARD.   THE ASSOCIATION MANAGES THE CUPBOARD, WHICH NEEDS TO MOVE TO A NEW  LOCATION AND THE DECISION WAS MADE  TO BUY  THE FORMER "MOVIES AMERICA" BUILDING ON WEST PLATT AND RELOCATE THE CUPBOARD THERE.     TO BUY,  REMODEL, AND ESTABLISH A FUND TO MAINTAIN THE BUILDING, THE DRIVE IS ON TO RAISE  OVER $280,000.   THEY'RE HALF-WAY THERE.   IN THE MOVIE, THE "BLUES BROTHERS" ALSO HAD A DRIVE TO RAISE MONEY AND SUCCEEDED WITH THE HELP OF THEIR BAND.    RON AND PASTOR JEFF HAVE NO BAND,  BUT HOPE THE
COMMUNITY WILL BAND-TOGETHER TO RAISE THE MONEY NEEDED.     SEND
YOUR CONTRIBUTION TO THE COMMUNITY CUPBOARD, % THE METHODIST
CHURCH, WESLEY DRIVE, MAQUOKETA.

SENATOR TOD BOWMAN, A TEACHER AT MAQUOKETA HIGH SCHOOL AND A RESIDENT OF MAQUOKETA, HAS ANNOUNCED PLANS TO SEEK RE-ELECTION TO THE STATE SENATE IN DISTRICT 29.

THURSDAY DAILY

FRED HUBBELL OF DES MOINES, DEMOCRATIC GUBERNATORIAL CANDIDATE,
VISITED MAQUOKETA OVER THE NOON HOUR TODAY, GREETING PEOPLE AND
SPEAKING IN THE LOBBY OF THE DECKER HOTEL.    THERE WAS LITTLE PUBLICITY
ABOUT HIS VISIT IN ADVANCE, SO ONLY ABOUGT 20-25  KNEW ABOUT HIS APPEARANCE AND CAME TO MEET HIM.   HE SAID HE WAS A  LIFELONG PROGRESSIVE DEMOCRAT AND FIFTH-GENERATION IOWAN.       HIS FIRST TIME RUNNING FOR PUBLIC OFFICE.    HE HAS SERVED AS CHAIRMAN OF YOUNKERS
DEPARTMENT STORES AND LATER PRESIDENT OF EQUITABLE OF IOWA LIFE
INSURANCE COMPANY.

AT RIGHT WITH THEIR  HANDS IN THEIR POCKETS, TWO FORMER LEGISLATURES,
ST. REP. TOM SCHUELLER IN RED AND SENATOR ROGER STEWART IN THE SUIT
WITH TIE.     THE TWO DEMOCRATS  SERVED TOGETHER IN DES MOINES AND
REPRESENTED US WELL.     ANOTHER FORMER ST. REP. BOB OSTERHAUS WOULD
HAVE BEEN AT THE MEETING TODAY, BUT WAS ATTENDING A FUNERAL IN
CEDAR RAPIDS.
I LIKE FRED HUBBELL.   HAVE NOT MET THE OTHER DEMOCRATS RUNNING,
SO CAN'T SAY FOR SURE THAT HUBBELL IS THE BEST.   MAYBE THEIR RADIO
ADVERTISING WILL TELL ME MORE.
AND...AFTER THE EVENT ENDED, NANCY AND I WALKED BACK TO THE DINING
ROOM AND HAD ANOTHER FINE DECKER LUNCH.    DELICIOUS, FAST, AND PRICED
RIGHT.    SINCE THE DECKER OPENED A COUPLE WEEKS AGO,  WE HAVE
EATEN THERE PROBABLY A HALF-DOZEN TIMES AND WILL TREAT THE FAMILY
TO EASTER BRUNCH THERE ON EASTER SUNDAY.
YES....IT IS GOOD TO HAVE THE DECKER OPEN AGAIN AND YES, THEY ARE A GOOD
NEIGHBOR, RIGHT ACROSS THE STREET.

YESTERDAY, KMAQ SALES REP LOIS FISCHER MADE AN ADVERTISING CALL TO MAQUOKETA'S NEWEST BEAUTY SHOP.      IT WAS FORMERLY THE HOME (OVER 40 YEARS) FOR "JACK AND ASSOCIATES" OWNED  BY JACK AND MARILYN WILLEY.     LOIS TOOK A FEW PHOTOS.....

TOMORROW WILL BE A BIG DAY AT McDONALDS IN MAQUOKETA
THE PUBLIC WILL TRY OUT THE NEW KIOSKS SHOWN ABOVE.    THE EVENT WILL BE FROM 5 UNTIL 7 P.M.
DURING WHICH TIME  THE STAFF WILL SHOW EVERYONE HOW TO ORDER ANYTHING ON THE MENU FROM THE KIOSKS.   ON THE TOUCH SCREEN, CHOOSE ITEMS, AND USE YOUR CREDIT CARD OR
DEBIT CARD AND WAIT FOR THE ORDER TO BE BROUGHT TO YOUR BOOTH OR TABLE.    A FASTER, BETTER WAY TO SERVCE CUSTOMERS.    BUT, AT THE
3 COUNTERS,  YOU WILL STILL HAVE THE OPTION TO GIVE YOUR ORDER TO A McDONALDS EMPLOYEE
LIKE IN THE PAST.

ALICE LINGLE IS A RESIDENT OF MAQUOKETA CARE CENTER UP BY PIZZA HUT.   TODAY, SHE IS 106 YEARS
OLD.    WE BELIEVE SHE IS THE OLDEST PERSON IN
MAQUOKETA AND MAY BE THE OLDEST IN JACKSON COUNTY.    SHE WAS SLEEPING AND I AWOKE HER
AND TALKED TO HER.  TOLD HER SHE LOOKED BEAUTIFUL AND SAID HER HAIR  LOOKED NICE.   SHE WAS QUIET BUT ALERT.   ACCORDING TO CATHY CLARK OF MAQUOKETA CARE, SHE IS GETTING SPECIAL ATTENTION TODAY.
SHE GOT A FLOWER FROM HER DAUGHTER-IN-LAW
BEV WYLIE OF DUBUQUE, WHO WORKS HERE IN
MAQUOKETA.    ALICE GETS AROUND WITH A WALKER.    SHE SAID SHE LIVED ON A FARM YEARS
AGO.    HAPPY 106TH BIRTHDAY TO ALICE LINGLE
I TOLD HER I WOULD SEE HER NEXT MARCH 22ND.
IF ANYONE HAS OTHER INFORMATION ABOUT HER,
PLEASE EMAIL ME AT kmaq@kmaq.com

WEDNESDAY DA ILY

BOMBFIRE PIZZA ON THE CORNER IN DOWNTOWN SABULA.
RECENTLY I TOLD YOU THAT IT IS ON A NEW WEB SITE THAT LISTS A SUGGESTED
RESTAURANT IN ALL 99 IOWA COUNTIES FOR TOURISTS TO VISIT.   THE ONE ABOVE BOMBFIRE PIZZA, IS THE JACKSON COUNTY PLACE ON THE WEB SITE.
THE PIZZA IS MADE QUICKLY IN A FURNACE THAT HEATS UP TO AROUND 700 OR MORE DEGREES AND THE RESULT,  A  GOOD-TASTING  PIZZA.    INSIDE AND OUTSIDE,
THE OWNER OVER THE LAST 10 YEARS HAS DISPLAYED MANY INTERESTING THINGS
AROUND THE SEATING AREA.    ALSO IN A BASEMENT DINING AREA.    WHEN YOU ATE AT BOMBFIRE PIZZA, YOU TOLD OTHERS ALL ABOUT IT.    THE POPULARITY WAS NOT JUST IN SABULA BUT MILES AROUND IN IOWA AND ILLINOIS.   THE OWNER, TOM HOLMAN, SUNDAY AFTERNOON, WAS FOUND DEAD IN HIS UPSTAIRS APARTMENT.     AGE 60, HE IS SURVIVED BY TWO BROTHERS AND
TWO SONS.   NO WORD ON CAUSE OF DEATH.    THERE WILL BE A CELEBRATION
OF HIS LIFE FROM 6 UNTIL MIDNIGHT FRIDAY AT THE RESTAURANT.     LAW-JONES
FUNERAL HOME IS IN CHARGE OF ALL ARRANGEMENTS.    CREMATION HAS TAKEN PLACE.     SABULA AND JACKSON COUNTY  HAS LOST AN ATTRACTION...A POPULAR
BUSINESS.    I HAVE NO IDEA IF THE PLACE WILL CONTINUE TO BE OPERATED BY SOMEONE AND LIVE-ON....OR NOT.    WILL KEEP YOU POSTED.    I HAD PIZZA THERE
ONLY TWICE....AND WE WERE PLANNING ON A VISIT AGAIN SOON.

LAST WEEK,  ALL AROUND THE DOWNTOWN AREA,  CITY EMPLOYEES WERE PUTTING UP NEW SHINEY BLACK POLES.     YESTERDAY, THEY MOUNTED  A
"HANDICAPPED" SIGN ON EACH ONE.    WE NEVER HAVE HAD THOSE BEFORE,
ONLY THE PAINTED ONES ON THE CONCRETE STREETS.     I'M SURE THESE BETTER-
MARKED PARKING PLACES WILL BE APPRECIATED.

FROM MY WINDSHIELD WINDOW, A PHOTO OF NEW BRICK REPLACING
OLD ON THE KIRBY'S COMPUTER STORE ON EAST PLATT.

AND...KUHLMAN'S CORNER ACROSS FROM LUTHERAN CHURCH WAS THE LOCATION FOR KUHLMAN'S  USED CARS UNTIL A FEW MONTHS AGO WHEN BUSINESS CLOSED.   NOW...LOOKS  LIKE LOT HAS COME BACK TO LIFE WITH SOME USED VEHICLES AGAIN,  AND OLD RESTORED FARM TRACTORS.    WILL CHECK AROUND AND SEE WHO IS RESPONSIBLE.

KIDS WILL LOVE THIS NEW MOVIE THAT STARTS THIS
FRIDAY AT THE VOY 1 THEATRE.

TUESDAY DAILY

MORE PHOTOS OF THE RAILROAD CAR BEING BUILDT AT BOYER HALL.
THE MAIN FRAME, WHEELS AND HOOKUP ASSEMBLY WAS FROM A 7 BY 32 FOOT GONDOLA CAR FROM COLORADO.    THE FLOOR AND SIDES WERE REMOVED AND THE  CAR WAS MADE 8 FEET LONGER HERE IN MAQUOKETA.    NOTE THE 6  LONG
(YELLOW) WOOD BEAMS THAT WERE SPECIALLY CUT FOR THE NEW FLOOR.
ANOTHER VIEW OF THE NEW LONGER FLOOR.   THE ABOVE TWO PHOTOS TAKEN
BY RICHARD ROCKROHR.     HAROLD LUBBEN HEADS UP THE TEAM REBUILDING
THE CAR AND RICHARD IS ONE HIS KEY WORKERS.
I TOOK THIS PHOTO TO SHOW THE NEW WALLS.

THIS PHOTO SHOWS THE HITCH ASSEMBLY AT FRONT OF CAR WHERE IT WOULD
HOOK UP TO ANOTHER CAR OR THE ENGINE.

THIS VIEW OF THE OTHER SIDE OF CAR, WHERE NEW WINDOWS WILL BE PUT.

WHEN FINISHED THE CAR WILL LOOK SOMEWHAT LIKE THE ONE ABOVE.

THE INTERIOR WILL LOOK SOMEWHAT LIKE THE ABOVE.    VIRL AND KATHY BANOWETZ HAVE DONATED BRASS PIECES AND WARREN LONGWELL IS
CONSTRUCTING TWO GAS LIGHT FIXTURES.
THIS CAR IS GOING TO BE WHAT THE RAILROAD CALLED A COMBINATION
CAR.    PART OF THE CAR WAS USED FOR SEATING FOR THE PASSENGERS AND
ANOTHER PART OF THE POST OFFICE AND ANOTHER PART FOR  ITEMS BEING
SHIPPED SOMEWHERE.      WORK WILL CONTINUE AT BOYER HALL UNTIL MID-MAY
AND THEN IT WILL BE MOVED NEXT DOOR INSIDE THE MACHINERY SHED WHERE
IT WILL BE FINISHED.     THEN MOVED TO THE TRACKS RUNNING ALONG SIDE
THE DEPOT LOCATED OVER BY THE CLINTON ENGINES MUSEUM.     THERE
THE FINISHING TOUCHES WILL BE DONE AND IT WILL BE OPENED FOR THE
PUBLIC TO GO INISIDE FOR A CLOSE LOOK.      THE LATE GERALDINE LAMBERT,
A LONG TIME TEACHER FROM SPRAGUEVILLE, LEFT FUNDING TO THE HISTORICAL SOCIETY FOR A PERMANENT EXHIBIT AND THE RAILROAD CAR IS IT.
WHEN WILL WORK ON THE CAR BE FINISHED?    WHEN I ASKED HAROLD OR RICHARD, IT SOUNDS LIKE IT COULD BE MONTHS FROM NOW.    BUT, IT WILL BE
WORTH THE WAIT.      STOP IN AT BOYER HALL SOMETIME AND WATCH THE
VOLUNTEERS WORK ON THE CAR.     AND LATER, I'LL TAKE SOME MORE
PHOTOS AND UPDATE YOU ON THIS DAILY REPORT ON THE PROGRESS BEING
MADE.      EXCITING!   YES INDEED, EXCITING!

MONDAY DAILY

SOMEDAY, THERE  WILL BE A RAILROAD CAR LOOKING SOMETHING LIKE THIS ONE ....ON THE NARROW GUAGE TRACK NEXT TO THE NARROW GUAGE RAILROAD DEPOT
NEAR THE JACKSON COUNTY HISTORICAL SOCIETY'S CLINTON ENGINES MUSEUM.
VOLUNTEERS ARE BUILDING IT RIGHT NOW INSIDE BOYER HALL AT THE FAIRGROUNDS IN MAQUOKETA.
I WILL HAVE MORE ABOUT THIS, AND PHOTOS, ON TOMORROW'S DAILY.

SATURDAY DAILY

Friday morning the 1932 Savanna Sabula Bridge was imploded into the Mississippi River below.

It will be hauled away in about 10 days. Next to where it stood is the new $80 million bridge that opened last December. It is closed until late May or June when the small bridge north of Sabula is replaced. It started settling last week and was closed for safety reasons. Now motorists need to take the Clinton bridge to Illinois and this is hurting business in Sabula and Savanna and Maquokete. Plus, the Caves will be closed most of this summer and will effect Maquoketa businesses. But when all is completed, it will help the local economy for years to come with more tourists on Highway 64 and more Caves visitors.

WEDNESDAY DAILY

THE JEHOVAH'S WITNESS BUILDING GOT SHORTER TODAY.      THE BACK
PART, A TALL GARAGE, WAS TORN DOWN AND HAULED AWAY.   LAST WEEK,
THE SIDING OF THE BUILDING WAS REMOVED.    SOON, IT WILL HAVE A WHOLE
NEW LOOK AND I'LL GET A PHOTO WHEN IT IS DONE.    MANY YEARS AGO,  IT STARTED OUT BEING A NEW BUILDING FOR A VETERINARIAN AND THEN SOLD AND CONVERTED TO A FUNERAL HOME.     IT WAS A FUNERAL HOME FOR JUST A YEAR OR TWO, AND WHEN IT HAD ONLY A COUPLE  FUNERALS, IT CLOSED AND WAS
PURCHASED BY THE JEHOVAH'S WITNESS.   IT IS RIGHT ACROSS FROM McDONALDS.
