WEDNESDAY DAILY

THE MOTEL BEHIND McDONALDS AT MAQUOKETA STARTED OFF AS A NEW
"SUPER 8 MOTEL" BUILDT AND OWNED BY McDONALDS OWNER GLEN KARPINSKI OF GALENA.    I'M GUESSING THIS WAS NEARLY 20 YEARS AGO.
THE SUPER 8 CHAIN HAS MOTELS ACROSS THE COUNTRY AND IS THE LARGEST BUDGET CHAIN IN THE U.S.
A FEW YEARS AGO, KARPINSKI CHANGED IT TO "MAQUOKETA INN AND SUITES".   NO MORE FRANCHISE FEE TO PAY.
HE THEN SOLD IT TO A. J. SPIEGEL OF PEOSTA  WHO RAN IT A COUPLE YEARS AND RECENTLY IT WAS SOLD BY  HIM TO A FOREIGN GROUP.    AND THEY NOW HAVE MADE IT PART OF A LARGE NATIONWIDE CHAIN AGAIN.

TODAY,  NEW SIGNS WENT UP.    THE ONE BELOW IS VERY  HIGH TO BE
SEEN FROM 4-LANE HIGHWAY 61.
THE WEB SITE SAYS "ECONOLODGE" ROOMS ARE PRICED AT $47 AND
UP PLUS TAXES.
MAQUOKETA'S OTHER CHAIN MOTEL IS "CENTERSTONE INN & SUITES" AT
THE SOUTH EDGE OF MAQUOKETA.
ROOMS ARE AVAILABLE DOWNTOWN, STARTING AGAIN NEXT MONTH, AT
"THE DECKER HOTEL".
AND FOR BED AND BREAKFAST FANS, THERE IS "SQUIRES MANOR BED AND
BREAKFAST".   IT IS OPEN AND FOR SALE AND THERE IS A PENDING BUYER, A COUPLE FROM CALIFORNIA.
TWO MOTELS THAT HOSTED MAQUOKETA VISITORS FOR MANY YEARS WERE THE "KEY MOTEL" AND THE "LAZY J" MOTEL, BOTH TORN DOWN WITHIN THE
LAST FIVE YEARS.

LAST NIGHT THE MAQUOKETA BOYS DEFEATED WEST DELAWARE IN
OVERTIME, 52 TO 51,  AND THE GIRLS LOST THEIR GAME TO WEST DELAWARE, 67 TO 65.

SUNDAY DAILY

ONE OF THE "BRIDGES OF MADISON COUNTY"?    NO!   THE FIRST AND ONLY
COVERED BRIDGE IN JACKSON COUNTY, A NEW JACKSON COUNTY TOURISM
ATTRACTION.   DENNIS AND JEANIE ALTHAUS BUILDT IT ON THEIR PROPERTY
2 MILES NORTH OF ST. DONATUS.   YOU CAN SEE IT FROM HIGHWAY 52.
LAST APRIL, THE LANE TO THEIR HOUSE WAS AGAIN COVERED BY 3 FEET OF
FLOODING LUX CREEK.    THEY DECIDED TO BUILD A BRIDGE SO THEY
WOULD NEVER  AGAIN HAVE THIS PROBLEM AND DECIDED TO GO THE EXTRA MILE AND MAKE IT A COVERED BRIDGE.   IT IS 68 FEET LONG,  19 FEET
WIDE AND 12 FEET HIGH AND SITS ATOP CONCRETE PIERS WHICH GO DOWN TO THE BEDROCK.   THE BRIDGE IS MADE OF TWO FLATBED RAILROAD
CARS WELDED TOGETHER.   EACH RAILROAD CAR COST $17,000 AND THE
REST OF BRIDGE IS MADE OF TREATED WHITE PINE    DENNIS DID  A LOT OF THE WORK AND MOST OF THE PLANNING, WITH SOME IDEAS FROM IIW
ENGINEERS.    THIS SPRING, DENNIS PLANS TO ADD A LARGE ENTRANCE
GATE OFF HIGHWAY 52 THAT WILL READ "ANTLER RIDGE" PAYING  HOMAGE
TO HIS HOBBY OF PHOTOGRAPHING WILD LIFE AND DEER.       DENNIS AND JEANIE ARE SEMI-RETIRED, AND STILL CO-OWN FAMILY BEER AND LIQUOR
AT EAST DUBUQUE WITH THEIR SON TIM.    THEY WILL CELEBRATE THEIR 50 ANNIVERSARY NEXT YEAR.
THINK OF THE HUNDREDS OF CITIZENS AND TOURISTS THAT WILL STOP
BY TO LOOK AT THE COVERED BRIDGE AND HAVE THIER PHOTO TAKEN
ON IT.    A GIFT SHOP IN THE FUTURE?     YES...ANOTHER TOURIST ATTRACTION FOR JACKSON COUNTY.     MAYBE THE PEACE PIPE PLAYERS WILL PRODUCE A NEW PLAY, "THE COVERED BRIDGE OF JACKSON COUNTY".
