86 DEGREES TODAY

THE JACKSON COUNTY BOARD OF SUPERVISORS THIS MORNING
REJECTED ALL BIDS FOR THE RENOVATION AND EXPANSION OF THE
PENROSE HOUSE ANNEX JUST WEST OF THE LAW CENTER.
THIS IS THE HOUSE PURCASED FOR $200,000 TO BE CONVERTED TO
COUNTY OFFICES.     AFTER BIDS LAST WEEK, IT WAS DETERMINED THAT
THE OVERALL COST COULD REACH $750,000 AT COMPLETION.
IN ADDITION TO COST, THE COUNTY RECENTLY FOUND OUT THAT ONE
OF THE OFFICES PLANNED IN THE HOUSE WILL NOT LOCATE THERE
AFTERALL AND WILL MOVE TO THE DAC OFFICES IN MAQUOKETA.   THAT
OFFICE WOULD HAVE BEEN THE LARGEST IN THE PENROSE ANNEX.
THE SUPERVISORS SAID THIS MORNING THAT IIW ENGINEERS HAD ORIGINALLY DRAWN UP A FLOOR PLAN FOR JUST THE HOUSE AND
NOT THE EXPANSION IN FRONT OF IT AND NOW THEY WILL TAKE ANOTHER
LOOK AT THAT PLAN AND GET COST ESTIMATES FOR THOSE RENOVATIONS.
EARLIER IN THE MEETING, THE POLICE CHIEF, SHERIFF AND CITY MANAGER
TALKED ABOUT A  DRIVEWAY INTO THE PENROSE ANNEX.     THE FIRST PROPOSAL FOR IT COULD GET THE DRIVEWAY CONGESTED AND TOO CLOSE TO THE PRISONERS EXERCISE AREA AND SO A NEW DRIVEWAY WILL BE
DESIGNED AND BROUGHT BACK TO THE SUPERVISORS.

TWO THEFTS WERE REPORTED TO POLICE.
PT WIRTH SAID SEVERAL ITEMS WERE TAKEN FROM HER GARAGE ON SOUTH VERMONT, INCLUDING A CELL PHONE, THREE SETS OF GOLF CLUB, AIR COMPRESSOR, HEDGE TRIMMER, METAL DETECTOR AND A COUPLE BASEBALL BATS.
AND THE SCHOOL LIAISON OFFICER REPORTED A STUDENT SAID SOMEONE TOOK $30 FROM THEIR LOCKER AT THE HIGH SCHOOL.

A MEETING WAS HELD THIS AFTERNOON BY THE CITY COUNCIL FINANCE
COMMITTEE AND STREET COMMITTEE, MEETING JOINTLY TO TALK ABOUT
THE COMMUNITY CENTER, NOW THAT THE SCHOOL DISTRICT HAS
DECIDED NOT TO PURCHASE IT.   SHOULD HAVE SOMETHING ON THIS
TOMORROW.

SUNNY AND WARM TODAY, 76.
TOMORROW, UP TO 82.
WEDNESDAY, 76 AGAIN FOR A HIGH.
THEN RAIN AND COOLER FOR REST OF THE WEEK.

THE WEATHER WAS GREAT OVER THE WEEKEND.
CAMPING AND CYCLING HAS STARTED AS YOU WILL SEE IN
A COUPLE PICTURES I TOOK SUNDAY AFTERNOON AT THE
SOUTH EDGE OF MAQUOKETA.

GERALD EDWARDS OF MAQUOKETA WHO WAS SHOT LAST
THURSDAY NIGHT IS STILL IN UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL IN IOWA CITY.
HE HAS HAD SURGERY.     OFFICIALS PLAN TO TALK WITH HIM TOMORROW IN THE  HOSPITAL.     CHIEF BRAD KORANDA SAID HE WAS SHOT WITH HIS OWN GUN.   KORANDA SAID THEY HAVE TALKED WITH QUITE A FEW PEOPLE
AND ARE STILL SEEKING INFORMATION FROM THE PUBLIC THAT MAY KNOW SOMETHING OF VALUE TO THE INVESTIGATION.   NO ARREST HAS BEEN MADE.

SOUTH SABULA LAKE HAS OPENED BUT SPRUCE CREEK PARK
AT BELLEVUE STILL REMAINS CLOSED BECAUSE OF HIGH WATER.

MARDONNA RICHEAL, AGE 80, DIED TODAY AT HER HOME IN DEWITT FOLLOWING A SHORT TIME WITH CANCER.    SHE WAS BORN IN MAQUOKETA IN 1950 TO DR. AND MRS. MARVIN DALCHOW.    HER COMPLETE OBITUARY
CAN BE READ AT SCHULTZ FUNERAL HOME.COM.

IN BOYS GOLF AT DYERSVILLE FRIDAY NIGHT, WITH 5 TEAMS IN IT,
MAQUOKETA CAME IN 3RD.    THE MEDALIST FOR THE DAY WAS
TY THEDE WITH A 36.

LOTS OF MONEY TO BE SPENT IN MAQUOKETA THIS WEEK.....PROFIT
FROM OVER 50 GARAGE SALES LAST WEEKEND.    GOOD WEATHER
CONTRIBUTED TO A VERY SUCCESSFUL SALE WEEKEND.

I TALKED TO A FARMER TODAY WHO SAID THE GROUND IS STILL SOMEWHAT
WET AND THAT FARMERS DO NOT HAVE TO BE IN  A HURRY TO
GET THE CROP IN.      WITH THE BIG MODERN MACHINERY, THERE IS
PLENTY OF TIME TO GET THE BEANS AND CORN PLANTED AND WITHOUT
PACKING THE SOIL.

HAVE A GOOD WEEK.

THE NEWEST, BRIGHTEST, BEST ROOF IN CLINTON COUNTY.   THE WORK
WAS COMPLETED YESTERDAY BY CLAY ROMER AND HIS MEN OF
CONNELL SUPPLY COMPANY IN MAQUOKETA.    THE OLD ROOF (BACK TO
1950 AND IT WAS A HOT TAR ONE AND NEEDED WORK EVERY FEW YEARS) HAS BEEN REPLACED BY A DURO-LAST RUBBER ROOF THAT WILL LAST
20 YEARS.      ANY QUESTIONS, CALL CLAY AT 563-652-3765.     THE FIRM
DATES BACK TO THE 40'S AND IS LOCATED AT THE NORTH EDGE OF
MAQUOKETA AT 906 PERSHING ROAD.     THEY DO WINDOWS AND SIDING

KMAQ SPORTS LEARNED TODAY THAT MAQUOKETA BOY'S BASKETBALL
COACH MATT UTHOFF HAS RESIGNED HIS COACHING JOB TO TAKE A
SIMILAR POSITION AT WEST DELAWARE HIGH SCHOOL IN MANCHESTER.
HE HAS BEEN THE HEAD COACH HERE FOR THE PAST THREE SEASONS.
HIS TEAM WAS 8 AND 14 THE FIRST YEAR....16 AND 6 IN YEAR TWO AND
13 AND 9 THIS PAST SEASON.     BEFORE COMING TO MAQUOKETA, HE
WAS THE HEAD COACH AT CENTRAL CITY HIGH SCHOOL.    UTHOFF DOES NOT TEACH.   HE WORKS FOR THE DEPARTMENT OF HUMAN SERVICES.

THE JACKSON COUNTY SUPERVISORS MAY SCALE BACK THEIR PLANS FOR
NEW OFFICES IN THE FORMER PENROSE HOME ON WEST PLATT STREET
JUST WEST OF THE LAW CENTER.    THE PURCHASED IT FOR  $200,000
AND HAVE GUTTED IT.   TO MEET RECOMMENDATIONS SUGGESTED BY
THE ENGINEERING FIRM, THE CURRENT PLANS COULD RESULT IN
AN $800,000 PROJECT.     THAT'S WAY MORE THAN ANTICIPATED.
CURRENT PLANS CALL FOR AN ADDITION IN FRONT.     ONE REASON THEY
COULD SCALE BACK IS THAT ONE OFFICE PLANNED FOR IT WILL NOT BE NEEDED AS IT WILL BE MOVING TO DAC,INC. IN MAQUOKETA.
I'LL HAVE MORE NEXT WEEK I'M SURE AS THE SUPERVISORS LOOK OVER
THE FIGURES THAT ARE COMING FROM ALL DIRECTIONS.

YESTERDAY, I HAD A PHOTO OF THE NEW DIGITAL PROJECTOR AT MY
61 DRIVE-IN THEATRE.    TODAY, A PHOTO  (CLICK-ON PHOTO TO ENLARGE IT) OF THE NEW DIGITAL SOUND SYSTEM THAT INCLUDES AN FM TRANSMITTER TO BROADCAST THE SOUND

LAST NIGHT, KWWL-TV IN WATERLOO DID A 3-MINUTE FEATURE ON THE DRIVE-IN DURING THE NEWS, INTERVIEWING JACK JONES (THEATRE MANAGER)  AND I.     YOU CAN GOOGLE KWWL-TV AND WATCH IT!

A BREAK-IN WAS REPORTED TO THE SHERIFF'S OFFICE.   TRAVIS BULLOCK
ON 216TH STREET REPORTED SOMEONE BROKE INTO HIS RESIDENCE AND TOOK A LAPTOP AND VIDEO GAMES.

LAST NIGHT, THE MAQUOKETA BOY'S GOLF INVITATIONAL WAS HELD
AT THE MAQUOKETA COUNTRY CLUB COURSE AND WAS WON BY WEST
