THIS "WAY BACK WHEN" KMAQ STAFF PHOTO WAS TAKEN IN 1965, SHORTLY AFTER
I CAME BACK TO AGAIN MANAGE KMAQ AFTER SERVING TWO YEARS IN THE U.S. ARMY, AS A RADIO ANNOUNCER. FOR 13 MONTHS OF THAT TIME, I WAS THE RADIO
SPECIALIST FOR THE 2ND ARMORED DIVISION AT FORT HOOD, TEXAS. OF THE 15- THOUSAND TROOPERS IN THE "HELL ON WHEELS" DIVISION, I HAD THE ONLY
BROADCASTER SLOT, SO I HAD PRETTY GOOD DUTY. THE ENTIRE DIVISION WAS
ALSO SENT TO GERMANY FOR A MONTH OF TRAINING, AND I COVERED THAT FOR RADIO AND TV STATIONS IN TEXAS. I WAS DISCHARGED AS AN E-5 BUCK SERGEANT IN MARCH OF 1965. PICTURED HERE, TO THE LEFT, IS EARL SAUNDERS AND TO THE RIGHT, DON ANDERSON. EARL STARTED AS AN ADVERTISING SALESMAN FOR KMAQ IN 1959, AROUND A YEAR AFTER THE STATION WENT ON THE AIR. HE HAD WORKED AT THE SAVANNA ARMY DEPOT. HE WAS A KMAQ SALESMAN, AND A GOOD ONE, FOR OVER 25 YEARS, RETIRING IN 1985. HIS LATE WIFE WAS EVA MAE AND SHE WAS A SCHOOL TEACHER IN MAQUOKETA AND THEY HAD TWO CHILDREN. I SEE EARL ABOUT ONCE A WEEK. DON ANDERSON WAS HIRED AT KMAQ WHILE I WAS IN THE ARMY, AS AN ANNOUNCER AND CHIEF-ENGINEER AND SO I DID NOT WORK WITH HIM LONG, AS HE LEFT THE STATION SHORTLY AFTER I RETURNED. NICE GUY, WELL LIKED AND WAS ACTIVE IN THE COMMUNITY. HE HAD A DEEP, CLEAR VOICE AND WAS A GOOD ANNOUNCER. HIS WIFE WORKED AT J.C. PENNEY'S IN DOWNTOWN MAQUOKETA, THEN ACROSS THE STREET FROM THE KMAQ UPSTAIRS STUDIOS. THEY HAD NO CHILDREN AND LATER GOT DIVORCED. I HAVE NO IDEA IF HE IS STILL LIVING. THIS PHOTO WAS TAKEN AT OUR OLD STUDIO LOCATION IN THE MAIN CONTROL ROOM. THAT CONTROL BOARD IN THE STUDIO IS NOW ON DISPLAY IN OUR FRONT STUDIO AND WAS MADE BY COLLINS RADIO IN CEDAR RAPIDS. IT'S OUR 50TH ANNIVERSARY THIS YEAR AND I'LL HAVE SOME MORE OLD PHOTOS WITH COMMENTS IN THE FUTURE.

FAREWAY ALSO ANNOUNCED TODAY THAT THEY HAVE PURCHASED THE DICK'S BUILDING AND WILL CONVERT IT INTO A FAREWAY STORE AND MOVE TO THE BUILDING THIS FALL AND THEN SELL THE DOWNTOWN STORE WHICH OPENED
IN 1963. FAREWAY DID NOT BUY THE DICK'S EXPRESS CONVENIENCE STORE, ADJACENT TO THE SUPER MARKET. NOTHING ELSE WAS SAID ABOUT ITS FUTURE.

MAQUOKETA CITY MANAGER BRIAN WAGNER SAID THIS WEEK THE DEVELOPER WHO IS PUTTING TOGETHER A PLAN TO BRING A NATIONAL PHARMACY CHAIN TO DOWNTOWN MAQUOKETA IS CLOSE TO FINALIZING THE PROJECT. THE NAME OF THE BUSINESS HAS NOT BEEN OFFICIALLY ANNOUNCED. WAGNER SAID HE ANTICIPATED AN ANNOUNCEMENT IN EARLY JUNE AND PLANS CALL FOR THE DEVELOPER TO TEAR DOWN THE BURNED-OUT BUILIDINGS ON MAIN STREET, ALONG WITH THE OLD MITCHELL-MASKREY MILL. IN EXCHANGE FOR $375,000, THE CITY WOULD GIVE THE DEVELOPER THE PARKING LOT AND ALLEY ADJACENT TO THE BURNED-OUT BUILDINGS AND A PORTION OF THE FORMER D.O.T. SHOP ON EAST PLATT STREET. IN TURN, THE DEVELOPER WOULD GIVE PART OF THE OLD D.O.T. SHOP PROPERTY TO MITCHELL-MASKREY, WHOSE BUSINESS IS LOCATED ADJACENT TO THE D.O.T. PROPERTY. FOR SOME TIME NOW, MITCHELL-MASKREY HAS RUN THEIR BUSINESS FROM EAST PLATT STREET AND THE MILL DOWNTOWN WAS LITTLE USED BY THEM. THE CITY IS ALSO ASKING THAT PART OF THE
PHARMACY'S PARKING LOT BE AVAILABLE TO USE BY THE PUBLIC.

NICE DAY TODAY...MOSTLY SUNNY, HIGH OF 61.

THE PHOTO OF THE EMPTY LOT IS WHERE THE BURNED-OUT MAQUOKETA RAILROAD DEPOT (FORMER DEPOT RESTAURANT) WAS LOCATED. THE FIRE WAS ABOUT 2 YEARS AGO AND THE BUILDING WAS AN EYESORE. KEN MOORE BOUGHT IT AND KLOCKE EXCAVATING TOOK DOWN THE FRAME OF THE BUILDING LAST WEEK.
THEY STARTED ON MONDAY AND FINISHED UP ON THURSDAY. KEN TOLD ME THERE
WAS NOTHING THAT COULD BE SAVED FOR HISTORICAL PURPOSES. THE ENTERIOR WAS GUTTED BY THE FIRE AND AFTER TWO YEARS, THE LEFT OVER MATERIAL WAS LIKE MUSH. KEN IS NOT SURE WHAT HE WILL DO WITH THE LOT. HE OWNS
THE LONG STORAGE AND OFFICE BUILDING JUST TO THE EAST. THE SMALL BUILDING TO THE NORTH OF WHERE THE DEPOT STOOD, IS OWNED BY SOMEONE
ELSE AND IS ON THE CITY STREET RUNNING NORTH AND SOUTH. SEEMS STRANGE TO SEE AN EMPTY SPACE WHERE A BUILDING STOOD IN MAQUOKETA FOR AROUND A HUNDRED YEARS. THE FOLLOWING EMAILED ME AND CORRECTLY IDENTIFIED
WHAT STOOD ON THE LAND IN THE PHOTO: ALISA SHIELDS...JUDY LYON...KARL SCHROEDER...VELMA WITT...MIKE PEARCY, JACK WEST, AND DEBORAH McCONCHIE.

MAQUOKETA POLICE ARE INVESTIGATING THREE MAILBOX VANDALISM INCIDENTS OVER THE WEEKEND ON MYATT DRIVE.

MAQUOKETA CITY COUNCIL MEETING TONIGHT. ON THE AGENDA...THE HURST HOTEL LOAN UPDATE....AND UPDATES ON PLAYGROUND EQUIPMENT IN CITY PARKS.
ALSO, THE COUNCIL WILL TALK AGAIN ABOUT A LETTER OF INTENT FOR A DEVELOPER WHO MAY BRING A NATIONAL PHARMACY CHAIN TO THE DOWNTOWN
BURNED-OUT AREA. THE LETTER WAS FIRST DISCUSSED AT A COUNCIL COMMITTEE MEETING LAST WEEK. THE "BIG BOX" RETAILER IS IN THE PROCESS OF BUYING ALL THE BURNED OUT PROPERTIES AND ALSO SOME ADDITIONAL PROPERTY, INCLUDING LAND OWNED BY THE CITY THAT IS USED FOR AN ALLEY AND CITY PARKING LOT. RUMOR HAS IT THAT THE OLD MITCHELL-MASKREY MILL WILL ALSO BE INCLUDED IN THE PROJECT, FOR THE LARGE STORE WHAT WOULD ALSO HAVE ITS OWN PARKING AREA. AND THE RUMOR ALSO IS THAT THE CHAINSTORE WOULD BE RESPONSIBLE FOR CLEANING UP THE ENTIRE BURNED-OUT AREA, STARTING IN JUNE.

EVERETT YADDOF, AGE 74, OF PRESTON, FORMER JACKSON COUNTY SUPERVISOR,
DIED YESTERDAY AT HIS HOME. SERVICES THIS THURSDAY AT THE LUTHERAN CHURCH IN PRESTON. MILLER-LAW-JONES FUNERAL HOME IN PRESTON IS IN CHARGE OF ARRANGEMENTS.

AT THE STATE TRACK MEET LAST WEEK, MAQUOKETA'S JUNIOR TRISHA MILLER
FINISHED 9TH IN THE 1500 METER RUN AND EARLIER IN THE MEET, FINISHED
SECOND IN THE CLASS 3-A 3,000 METER RUN. NICE SHOWING BY TRISHA.
THE MAQUOKETA BOYS 4 BY 100 METER RELAY TEAM WAS 12TH AND DID NOT QUALIFY FOR THE FINALS. MEMBERS OF THE TEAM WERE: TYLER RUTENBECK,
TREVOR MANGLER, DILLON O'CONELL AND ERIC MANSON. SENIOR MANSON ALSO TOOK 6TH PLACE IN THE LONG JUMP.

BOTH THE MAQUOKETA GIRL'S SOFTBALL TEAM...AND THE BOY'S BASEBALL TEAM,
STARTED THE SEASON THIS AFTERNOON.

2008 IS KMAQ'S 50TH ANNIVERSARY YEAR! HERE'S ANOTHER PHOTO TAKEN BACK
IN THE EARLY DAYS. IT WAS TAKEN ON OCTOBER 24, 1959. KMAQ'S FIRST OFFICIAL DAY ON-THE-AIR WAS AUGUST 26,1958. THIS WAS A "GOING AWAY" PARTY FOR ANNOUNCER BILL LONGMAN. BILL WAS NOT WITH US AT THE START AND HAD PREVIOUS EXPERIENCE AS AN ANNOUNCER. HIS MOM (CHARLOTTE) AND DAD (SHORTY) WERE FROM MAQUOKETA. BOTH NO LONGER LIVING. BILL CAME BACK A SECOND TIME TO WORK FOR KMAQ AND ALSO WORKED AT STATION LATER ON IN DAVENPORT, BEFORING GETTING OUT OF RADIO. HAD A NICE RADIO VOICE.
STOPPED IN FOR A SHORT VISIT THIS PAST WINTER AND IS NOW RETIRED. HE IS ON THE EXTREME RIGHT IN THIS PHOTO. ON THE EXTREME LEFT IS RAY SHIELDS, BORN AND RAISED IN FULTON, IOWA. HIS BROTHERS WERE JIM SHIELDS AND GLEN "RED" HENTON. HE WAS AN ENGINEER (BUILDT KMAQ AND KEPT IT RUNNING) AND ALSO THE MORNING ANNOUNCER. THE THREE BROTHERS WERE ALL MUSICIANS AND HAD A DAILY MONDAY-FRIDAY FIFTEEN MINUTE SHOW DURING THE NOON HOUR, SPONSORED BY KIRCHOFF DISTRIBUTING, AND SCHMIDT BEER. BERNICE HENTON AND WINDY RIMMER WERE ALSO ON THE DAILY SHOW, WHICH WE TAPED ON TUESDAY NIGHTS FOR THE ENTIRE NEXT WEEK. I REMEMBER THOSE TAPING SESSIONS, IN THE SAME ROOM PICTURED HERE. I RAN THE TAPE RECORDER IN THE NEXT-DOOR ROOM, LOOKING THROUGH A STUDIO WINDOW.
RAY LEFT KMAQ IN 1964. HE, WIFE ROSE, AND SON MOVED TO HARRISON, ARKINSAS AND RAY WORKED AT A STATION THERE. THEY THEN MOVED TO MOUNTAIN HOME, ARKINSAS AND A RADIO STATION THERE. RAY DIED MANY YEARS AGO IN MT. HOME. HIS SON DIED A COUPLE YEARS AGO AND ROSE STILL LIVES THERE.
JIM SHIELDS LIVED IN MAQUOKETA AND BOTH HE AND HIS WIFE ETHEL ARE DECEASED. RED HENTON IS STILL GOING STRONG AS A MAQUOKETA MUSICIAN AND RETIRED FROM THE POST OFFICE. BERNICE DIED ABOUT 4 YEARS AGO AND WINDY HAS BEEN GONE A LONG TIME. SITTING ON THE DESK, IS STAN BARTON,
THE FIRST NEWS DIRECTOR FOR KMAQ. HE, LIKE BILL AND I, WERE SINGLE IN THE LATE 50'S. STAN ROOMED AT MINNIE HEGSTROM'S BOARDING HOUSE ON SOUTH MAIN AND DATED MARILYN HUTE, BUT THEY NEVER MARRIED. STAN WAS A UD COLLEGE GRAD AND HAD PRIOR EXPERIENCE IN RADIO BEFORE COMING TO KMAQ. HE AND I DID A LOT OF TEEN HOPS TOGETHER. HE LEFT KMAQ AFTER A YEAR AND A HALF OR SO, AND WENT TO KROS IN CLINTON. LATER ON, BECAME A STATION-OWNER IN INDIANA. HIS HOMETOWN WAS DUBUQUE AND I HAVE NOT HEARD FROM HIM FOR PROBABLY 25 OR 30 YEARS. I ASSUME HE IS STILL LIVING, AND RETIRED. AND, ALSO IN PHOTO, ME TAKING A PIECE OF SOMETHING OFF THE PLATE BEING HELD BY STAN. THE STATION WAS THEN AT 136 1/2 SOUTH MAIN STREET, A LONG STAIRWAY TO THE TOP. THE MAQUOKETA MAIN STREET CAFE
IS BELOW IT NOW AND THERE ARE APARTMENTS WHERE KMAQ WAS LOCATED.
WE WERE THERE UNTIL THE FALL FIRE NEXT DOOR IN THE COAST TO COAST STORE, IN 1970. WATER AND SMOKE DAMAGE FROM THAT FIRE FORCED KMAQ TO MOVE TO OUR PRESENT LOCATION. MORE ON THAT LATER.

YES, I'M STILL ALIVE! WE ATTENDED A MOVIE CONVENTION LAST MONDAY THRU THURSDAY AT LAKE GENEVA, WISCONSIN. GREAT LITTLE BIG TOWN AND GOOD CONVENTION. SAW THREE SOON-TO-BE RELEASED MOVIES! YOU ARE GOING TO LIKE "SEX AND THE CITY". WENT TO FORUMS ON MOVIES, TOOK IN THE MOVIE TRADE SHOW, SAW OODLES OF PREVIEWS OF UPCOMING MOVIES, AND ATE LOTS OF GOOD FOOD AT THE BANQUETS. THE CONVENTION WAS AT THE GENEVA CENTER, THAT YEARS AGO WAS A PLAYBOY CLUB. A LARGE BEAUTIFUL FACILITY FOR CONVENTIONS. ANYWAY, I'M ALL PUMPED UP ABOUT THE MOVIE BUSINESS AND LOOKS LIKE WE SHOULD HAVE SOME VERY GOOD MOVIES TO SHOW THIS SUMMER AT THE VOY 3 AND THE 61 DRIVE-IN THEATRE. LAKE GENEVA IS A POPULAR CITY IN THE SUMMER FOR CHICAGO RESIDENTS WHO EITHER HAVE SUMMER HOME THERE (HUGE HOMES) OR ARE VISITORS FROM THE WINDY CITY. YOU WOULD ENJOY A VISIT.....ONLY ABOUT 3 - 4 HOURS FROM NORTHEAST IOWA. AND..SATURDAY, I TOOK THE PHOTO ABOVE. AN EMPTY LOT NOW. WHAT STOOD THERE UNTIL HIS PAST MONDAY? A NEW COMMUNITY ORGANIZATION HAS FORMED IN MAQUOKETA TO SUPPORT CURRENT ARTISTS IN THE MAQUOKETA AREA AND ATTRACT NEW ONES.
THE MAQUOKETA ART EXPERIENCE WAS ANNOUNCED DURING A PRESS CONFERENCE YESTERDAY AT THE OHNWARD FINE ARTS CENTER IN MAQUOKETA. WELL KNOWN AND RESPECTED MAQUOKETA ARTIST ROSE FRANTZEN AND HER HUSBAND, CHUCK

THE MAQUOKETA CITY COUNCIL MAY RESTRICT FIREWOOD COMING INTO THE CITY TO COMBAT THE EMERALD ASH BORER. THIS WEEK, COUNCILMEN DIRECTED THE CITY STAFF TO DRAW UP AN ORDINACE WHICH WOULD PREVENT ANYONE FROM BRINGING FIREWOOD INTO THE CITY. THE EMERALD ASH BORER HAS BEEN FOUND IN WESTERN ILLINOIS. IF THE BUG SPREADS TO IOWA, IT COULD DO WHAT DUTCH ELM DISEASE DID MANY YEARS AGO. AGAIN, I'LL KEEP YOU POSTED. THIS PROPOSED ORDINANCE WILL LIKELY CREATE LOTS OF DISCUSSION.

DENISE NEMMERS, AGE 48, OF LAMOTTE, DIED THURSDAY AT HER HOME.
SHE HAD WORKED SINCE 1978 FOR MAQUOKETA DENTIST DR. CLYDE OVERTURF,

NICE SUNNY WARM DAY TODAY. UPPER 70'S.

SOMEONE HAS BEEN STEALING GRAVEL OFF COUNTY ROADS BETWEEN LAMOTTE AND BELLEVUE. COUNTY ENGINEER CLARK SCHLOZ OF MAQUOKETA TOLD THE BOARD OF SUPERVISORS THIS MORNING THAT SOMEONE HAS BEEN USING A SKID
LOADER TO STEAL THE GRAVEL THAT COUNTY CREWS HAVE BEEN PUTTING DOWN.
HE SAID THERE IS A POTENTIAL FOR CRIMINAL CHARGES AGAINST THE PERSON.
HE SAID COUNTY CREWS ARE WORKING HARD TO GET THE ROADS BACK INTO SHAPE AND DON'T NEED SOMEONE TAKING THE GRAVEL. RESIDENTS ARE ASKED TO CALL THE SHERIFF'S OFFICE IF THEY HAVE ANY INFORMATION ON THE THEFT OF GRAVEL.

THE COMMITTEE THAT RAISED MONEY TO OPEN THE OLD MAQUOKETA SWIMMING POOL AGAIN THIS SUMMER, GAVE A CHECK FOR $25,000 TO THE MAQUOKETA CITY COUNCIL AT THEIR MEETING LAST NIGHT. BUT BEFORE GIVING THE CHECK, ONE OF THE MEMBERS OF THE COMMITTEE, NICOLE HUTE (HER HUSBAND IS A COUNCILMAN) HAD HARSH WORDS FOR THE COUNCIL. SHE TOLD THE COUNCIL THEY HAD BETTER FIND THE MONEY FOR NEXT YEAR, BECAUSE PEOPLE WOULDN 'T DONATE THE $25,000 AGAIN. SHE SAID THE $25,000 IS A LOT OF VOTES AND SAID IF THEY WANTED TO STAY WHERE THEY WERE SITTING THEY SHOULD FIND A WAY TO FUND THE OUTDOOR POOL AGAIN NEXT YEAR. I WATCHED THE COUNCIL MEETING "LIVE" ON THE PUBLIC ACCESS CHANNEL AND WAS SURPRISED THAT SHE ADMONISHED THE COUNCIL AS SHE DID. I WAS ALSO SURPRISED THAT THEY DID NOT GIVE THE COUNCIL ALL THE MONEY THEY RAISED, WHICH WAS APPARENTLY A COUPLE THOUSAND OR MORE DOLLARS OVER THEIR GOAL OF $25,000. TO OPEN THE POOL FOR A SHORTENED SUMMER SEASON WILL ACTUALLY COST AROUND DOUBLE THAT AMOUNT. THE $25,000 NEEDED WAS THE AMOUNT NOT IN A BUDGET. KMAQ NEWS DIRECTOR SHERI MELVOLD TOLD ME THAT SHE HEARD SOME PAINTING MAY BE DONE BEFORE THE POOL OPENS, AND THAT THE COMMITTEE MAY PAY FOR THAT. SHE ALSO TOLD ME THAT THE WATER IN THE POOL WILL NOT BE HEATED THIS YEAR, TO KEEP COSTS DOWN. HOPEFULLY, THAT WON'T CAUSE A PROBLEM. A LOT DEPENDS ON THE SUMMER WEATHER. WITH GOOD HOT SUMMER WEATHER, I'M SURE THE POOL WILL GET LOTS OF USE. AND OF COURSE THIS SUMMER, SWIMMERS WILL ALSO HAVE THE NEW YMCA POOL TO USE, IF THEY ARE A MEMBER. NEVER IN THE HISTORY OF THE CITY, HAS THERE BEEN TWO BIG SWIMMING POOLS OPEN FOR PUBLIC USE. I WILL CONCLUDE THIS STORY WITH THREE WORDS: "I CAN'T SWIM".

HAVE A GOOD NIGHT AND WEDNESDAY. CHECK THE WAY-BACK-WHEN PHOTO
BELOW.

DURING THIS 50TH ANNIVERSARY YEAR FOR KMAQ, I WILL BE PUTTING UP SOME PHOTOS OF THE PAST. THIS PHOTO WAS TAKEN ON AUGUST 11, 1966 AT THE 1966 JACKSON COUNTY FAIR. KMAQ WAS 8 YEARS OLD THEN AND I WAS 27. ONE OF THE EVENING SHOWS WAS THE LASSIE SHOW. SHOWN HERE WITH LASSIE IS
HIS OWNER AND TRAINER RUDD WEATHERWAX. RUDD WAS BORN IN 1907, SO HE WAS 59 HERE. HE DIED IN 1985, AT THE AGE OF 78. HE WAS A FAMOUS MAN (AND SO WAS LASSIE FAMOUS), SO I WAS QUITE THRILLED TO GET INTERVIEW WITH HIM.
I RECALL, LASSIE BARKED FOR THE MIKE. IN THOSE DAYS, WE RAN AROUND THE FAIRGROUNDS WITH A GARDEN TRACTOR AND ON THE BACK OF IT, WAS A PLATFORM AND A TRANSMITTER THAT YOU CAN SEE HERE. SO, I WOULD MAKE "LIVE" INTERVIEWS ALL OVER THE FAIRGROUNDS. KEPT ME TRIM THAT WEEK.
MY HAIRDO IS ABOUT THE SAME....WEAR GLASSES NOW....AND MY WAISTLINE HAS CHANGED A LITTLE. REMEMBER, TO ENLARGE TO PHOTO, CLICK ON IT.
