COLD AGAIN TODAY AND NO SUNSHINE.
SNOW TONIGHT AND TOMORROW, A TOTAL OF 4 INCHES EXPECTED.
AND COLD THE ENTIRE WEEKEND.
THE OHNWARD BANK AND TRUST IN BALDWIN WAS ROBBED SHORTLY AFTER 9 THIS MORNING. A LONE GUNMAN TOOK MONEY AND HEADED SOUTH
ON 50TH AVENUE. HE HAS NOT BEEN APPREHENDED. HE WAS DESCRIBED AS 5' 10" TO 6-FOOT WITH A HEAVY BUILD AND POSSIBLE A FAKE BEARD. THE AMOUNT OF MONEY TAKEN WAS NOT DISCLOSED. NO ONE WAS INJURED.
YESTERDAY, I HAD A PHOTO OF DOWNTOWN WHEN THERE WAS ONE TRAFFIC LIGHT IN THE MIDDLE OF MAIN AND PLATT. BILL LUCKEY OF
WISCONSIN EMAILED AN INTERESTING SIDE NOTE. HE SAID THE STOP
LIGHT WAS A RED LIGHT AND WHEN LAW ENFORCEMENT WAS REQUIRED
FOR ANY GIVEN SCENARIO, THE RESIDENT NEEDING HELP WOULD CALL THE
TELEPHONE OPERATOR REQUESTING POLICE ASSISTANCE. THE OPERATOR
WOULD IN TURN TURN THE RED LIGHT ON AND THE POLICE ON FOOT PATROL
WOULD CALL-IN TO GET NECESSARY INFORMATION BEFORE RESPONDING.
AND MAX MOELLER IN ARIZONA SAID THE ONLY OTHER STOP AND GO
IN MAQUOKETA WAS AT MAIN AND PLEASANT AND ALSO IN THE MIDDLE
OF THE INTERSECTION. THAT IS....SAID MAX....UNTIL TWO FIREMEN
COLLIDED AND TOOK IT OUT AND CRUSHED HIS DAD'S CHRYSLER THAT WAS PARKED ON THE WEST SIDE OF MAIN STREET, NORTH OF PLEASANT.
FOLLOW-UP ON THE MEN'S CITY BOWLING TOURNAMENT IN MAQUOKETA.
THE TEAM IN FIRST PLACE: BARRON MOTOR SUPPLY.
DOUBLES LEADERS: JARETT FRANZEN AND TYLER GARIEN.
SINGLES LEADER IS MIKE WILLIAMS WITH AN 830.

SCRATCH ALL-EVENTS, BRAD GEHL.
THE CARDINAL BOWLING TEAMS, BOTH GIRLS AND BOYS, DEFEATED
BELLEVUE LAST NIGHT. THE BOWLERS ARE IN INDEPENDENCE TODAY FOR A WAMAC DUAL.
THE GIRLS AND BOYS BASKETBALL TEAMS TAKE ON SOLON TONIGHT.
THE GIRLS HERE AND THE BOYS THERE. THE BOYS VARSITY GAME
WILL BE ON KMAQ-FM TONIGHT AND ALSO OUR WEB HOME PAGE.
LAST NIGHT THE BOYS BEAT WEST DELAWARE 45 TO 44.
THE GIRLS LOST LAST NIGHT, 46 TO 37.
THE MAQUOKETA WRESTLERS LAST NIGHT LOST TO CENTER POINT-
URBANA AND MIDLAND. JACOB KLOFT OF MAQUOKETA DID GET A PIN AND A TECHNICAL FALL LAST NIGHT.
ASHER SCHROEDER OF MAQUOKETA GAVE A TALK AT 9 THIS MORNING
TO MAQUOKETA STATE BANK STAFF MEMBERS ON HIS TIME IN WORLD WAR II
WHEN HE WAS INJURED AND A POW. THAT WAS IN 1943 AND EARLY 1944.
ABOVE, A PHOTO OF HIM THEN ...AND HIS MEDALS AND AND ID (DOG) TAG.
I DID A VIDEO OF THE SPEECH (ABOUT 45 MINUTES) AND LATER TONIGHT
OR TOMORROW, YOU CAN WATCH AND LISTEN TO IT ON THE MAQUOKETA VFW WEB SITE. JUST GOOGLE MAQUOKETA VFW FOR IT. VERY
INTERESTING TO LISTEN TO. HE GOT A STANDING THANK-YOU HAND

GOOD MORNING...
NO SCHOOL TODAY...ANYWHERE AROUND HERE.
FOR MAQUOKETA, THE 6TH DAY OF NO-SCHOOL BECAUSE OF THE WEATHER.
RIGHT NOW, 10 BELOW HERE IN MAQUOKETA.
6 BELOW WILL BE OUR HIGH TODAY.
20 BELOW TONIGHT.
COLD AGAIN TOMORROW.
WEDNESDAY, THE WEATHER STARTS TO IMPROVE.
PROBLEM LAST NIGHT .. THE BLOWING SNOW. MANY CARS IN THE DITCH BECAUSE OF DRIFTING.
IT WILL BE NICE TO SEE JANUARY END THIS SATURDAY.
IN SPORTS, THE MAQUOKETA BOYS AND GIRLS BASKETBALL TEAMS
WON OVER CLEAR CREEK AMANA FRIDAY NIGHT. THE GIRLS ALSO PLAYED SATURDAY NIGHT AND LOST UP AT DUBUQUE WAHLERT. THE BOYS RECORD NOW IS 5 AND 9. THE GIRLS ARE 5 AND 10.
THE CARDINAL BOYS AND GIRLS BOWLING TEAM BEAT CASCADE FRIDAY
NIGHT AT TIMBER LANES.
AND THE WRESTLERS IN THE WYOMING TOURNAMENT SATURDAY, HAD TWO CHAMPIONS, DALLAS DURKOP AND LOGAN MAYBERRY.
ROY MOREHEAD DIED OVER THE WEEKEND DOWN IN ARIZONA WHERE HE HAS LIVED A LONG TIME. HE WAS 91. I HAVE GOOD MEMORIES OF ROY.
WHEN KMAQ WENT ON THE AIR IN 1958, THE HARRIS PENROSE COMPANY ON THE CORNER OF EAST PLATT WAS ONE OF OUR EARLY ADVERTISERS.
HAROLD PENROSE RAN THE GOODYEAR TIRE STORE AND ROY IN SAME BUILDING (HAROLD HIS BROTHER-IN-LAW) RAN THE HARDWARE AND APPLIANCE STORE....GE APPLIANCES. I CALLED ON HIM HUNDREDS OF TIMES TO SELL RADIO SPOTS OR TO CHANGE COPY. HE WAS ALWAYS BUSY...ALWAYS UPBEAT. WE WERE IN LIONS TOGETHER. I REMEMBER ONE NIGHT THE LIONS HAD A BROOM SALE IN THE CITY AND I SOLD WITH ROY. IT WAS AROUND 7 P.M. AND WE WERE NEAR THE LIBRARY AND ROY POINTED TO A BIG HOUSE AND SAID, THE GUY THERE IS ALREADY PROBABLY IN BED BUT WE ARE GOING UP TO THIS ROOM AND SELL HIM A BROOM. WE DID.....AND THE GUY BOUGHT ONE. ROY'S BRICK HOME WAS LOCATED ACROSS THE STREET FROM SQUIERS MANOR BED AND BREAKFAST AND HIS LAWN WAS ALWAYS PERFECT, NO WEEDS. HE LIKED KEEPING IT LOOKING LIKE THAT. ONE OF LAST HOMES HE LIVED IN WAS ONE UP BY BLUFF LAKE ON CAVES ROAD. I DON'T KNOW WHEN WAS THE LAST TIME I SAW HIM.....AT LEAST 10 YEARS AGO, MAYBE MORE. I DON'T THINK HE MADE MANY VISITS UP HERE IN HIS LATE YEARS. QUITE A GUY. SERVICES ARE PENDING AT CARSON'S.
YESTERDAY AFTERNOON, WENT TO SEE THE MOVIE "THE LONE SURVIVOR".
IT IS ONE OF THE TOP 2 MOVIES IN THE COUNTRY, BASED ON A TRUE
STORY ABOUT 4 NAVY SEALS ON A HORRIBLE MISSION IN AFGANISTAN.
THE RICK VOY FAMILY CAME UP FROM BETTENDORF AND LIKE US, THEY
LIKED IT.
THEN, UP TO PIZZA HUT AS IT WAS JUST STARTING TO SNOW AGAIN.
IN THE BOOTH NEXT TO US... THE MAYBERRY'S (BILL & SUE) ENJOYING PIZZA TOO. THEY FINISHED IT BEFORE THEY LEFT.
BILL HAD A LONG GOOD CAREER WITH CLINTON ENGINES. THE MAYBERRY FAMILY PROVIDED LOTS OF WRESTLING THRILLS OVER THE YEARS.
IN MY STORY HERE TODAY, A MAYBERRY A CHAMPION SATURDAY. ANYWAY,
GOOD TO SEE WE WERE NOT THE ONLY ONES LEAVING THE HOUSE DURING
A NASTY WINTER AFTERNOON.
RICK AND FAMILY TOOK OFF FOR BETTENDORF SOON AFTER THE ABOVE GROUP PHOTO AND HAD A SLOW TRIP BACK THROUGH THE HOWLING WIND STORM. IT WAS NICE TO HAVE THEM FOR A SHORT VISIT.
CHECK LATER TODAY FOR THE REGULAR MONDAY DAILY REPORT.
STAY WARM. DRESS WARMLY AND IF GOING SOME WHERE, BUCKLE UP

WE WERE LOOKING TO HIT UPPER 20'S TODAY, BUT 25 WAS IT.
AND WITH THE WIND, FELT MUCH COLDER.
TONIGHT, MAYBE AN INCH OF SNOW.
TOMORROW, THE TEMP WILL DROP TO 11 BY LATE AFTERNOON.
THEN, 4 INCHES OF SNOW SATURDAY NIGHT.
SUNDAY, 28 AND SUNDAY NIGHT, DOWN TO (-12).
MONDAY, THE HIGH WILL BE (-10).
THE CITY OF MAQUOKETA HAS DECLARED A SNOW REMOVAL EMERGENY
FOR THE WEEKEND.
SERIOUS PLANS WERE DISCUSSED THIS WEEK BY THE MAQUOKETA CITY COUNCIL CONCERNING A RE-DO DOWNTOWN PROJECT CALLED
"STREETSCAPE". MANY CITIES HAVE DOWN IT....SIDEWALKS, NEW
SEWER AND WATER LINES, LIGHTING, CROSSWALKS, BUMPOUTS, TREES AND SO FORTH. MAQUOKETA PLANS TO START WITH QUARRY STREET (IN NEED OF WORK) AND THE INTERSECTION OF NORTH MAIN AND QUARRY, THE
CORNER WITH THE POST OFFICE. THIS FIRST PHASE PROJECTED TO COST $391,000. FEDERAL FUNDING WILL PAY SOME PART. LOCAL FUNDING
WILL PAY THE REST, AND COULD MEAN NEW TAX MONEY. AFTER QUARRY AND MAIN IS COMPLETED (DESIGN PHOTOS LOOK SHARP), THE PROJECT
WILL PROBABLY MOVE SOUTH ON MAIN STREET AND EVENTUALLY COULD BE 3 BLOCKS LONG, INCLUDING TWO MORE INTERSECTIONS. THIS "STREETSCAPE" WOULD HAVE TO BE DONE IN STAGES AND WILL THEREFORE TAKE YEARS TO COMPLETE. THE COMPANY DOING THE DESIGN WILL BE BACK TO TALK TO THE COUNCIL IN FEBRUARY AND HAVE
A FINAL DESIGN FOR QUARRY AND MAIN FOR APPROVAL.
THE MAQUOKETA POLICE DEPARTMENTS FIRST-EVER PICK-UP....AND
I HEAR THEY LIKE IT.
BOY'S BASKETBALL ON KMAQ TONIGHT....MAQUOKETA AT TIFFIN TO PLAY
CLEAR CREEK AMANA....7:30 ON KMAQ-FM AND OUR INTERNET SITE.
KAREN CHRIST OF MAQUOKETA WAS OUR BINGO WINNER ON KMAQ

I CUT THIS PHOTO FROM THIS WEEK'S BELLEVUE HERALD-LEADER. MAQUOKETA IS THE COUNTY SEAT OF JACKSON COUNTY, BUT WAY BACK,
IT WAS ALSO AT BELLEVUE AND ANDREW. THIS BUILDING WAS CONSTRUCTED IN 1848. A PORTION WAS FOR THE COURTHOUSE AND ANOTHER PORTION FOR A SCHOOL. IT IS STILL IN USE TODAY. IT PROBABLY IS THE OLDEST SCHOOL BUILDING IN IOWA. AS YOU DRIVE IN TO TOWN FROM MAQUOKETA, SLOW DOWN AND TAKE A LOOK. 166 YEARS OLD AND STILL IN USE. WHEN CONSTRUCTED, IT DID HAVE A CUPOLA AND IT WAS REMOVED AROUND 1950. IT ANNUALLY NEEDS REPAIRS OF COURSE, BUT THERE ARE NO PLANS TO DISCONTINUE USING IT. DAVID NAMANNY,
THE NEW EDITOR OF THE PAPER, HAS A GOOD STORY WITH THE PHOTO. HE HAS BEEN DOING LOTS OF INTERESTING STORIES SINCE HE ARRIVED.
GOOD PAPER!
