SATURDAY DAILY

Friday morning the 1932 Savanna Sabula Bridge was imploded into the Mississippi River below.

It will be hauled away in about 10 days. Next to where it stood is the new $80 million bridge that opened last December. It is closed until late May or June when the small bridge north of Sabula is replaced. It started settling last week and was closed for safety reasons. Now motorists need to take the Clinton bridge to Illinois and this is hurting business in Sabula and Savanna and Maquokete. Plus, the Caves will be closed most of this summer and will effect Maquoketa businesses. But when all is completed, it will help the local economy for years to come with more tourists on Highway 64 and more Caves visitors.
