TAKEN, HARDLY ANY STANDING ROOM, PARKING SPACES WERE HARD TO FIND AND IT WAS THE BIGGEST NIGHT ATTENDANCE EVER.
DURING THE 5 DAYS OF THE FAIR THIS YEAR, THE TOTAL ATTENDANCE

THE ATTENDANCE PRIZE OF $500 WAS WON BY ED HOLLAND OF WYOMING.
FIRST PLACE IN THE HUG-A-HOG CONTEST WAS THE TEAM OF LORNA SCOTT, NIN FLAGEL, AND JAKE FLAGEL.
BEFORE THE SATURDAY NIGHT MUSIC SHOW (WHICH DID NOT HAVE A BIG
CROWD) THE SATURDAY ACT FOR NEXT JULY AT THE FAIR WILL BE

A MAQUOKETA YOUTH, JARON CLARK, AGE 13, RECEIVED A BROKEN ANKLE IN AN ATV ACCIDENT.     IT HAPPENED ON PRIVATE PROPERTY AND DEPUTY TERRY ROLING SAID CLARK SWERVED AND STEPPED ON THE BRAKES TO AVOID HITTING A  BLACK LAB DOG.   THE ATV TIPPED ON ITS SIDE AND
LANDED ON CLARK'S LEFT FOOT.    HIS ANKLE IS BROKEN IN TWO PLACES.

WAL MART IN MAQUOKETA HAS A NEW OUTSIDE LOOK THANKS TO PAINTING OF THE BUILDING  IN NEW BROWN-TONE COLORS.    THE ENTRY WAY IS NEW ALSO, TO BE MORE ENERGY EFFICIENT.     HOT AIR IN THE SUMMER AND
COLD AIR IN THE WINTER WILL NOT GET INTO THE BUILDING AS MUCH AS BEFORE.    WONDER IF THEY GOT A LOAN TO DO THIS?

THIS BUILDING WAS A LIQUOR STORE FOR YEARS, STARTED BY FORMER
MAQUOKETA BUSINESSMAN AND MAYOR  JACK ROSENBERG.    NOW, IT
IS THE NEW HOME OF H & R BLOCK AND DAVID RICHARDS INSURANCE,
MOVING FROM A BUILDING THEY RENTED NEXT TO THE THEATRE.   THIS
BUILDING IS ACROSS THE STREET FROM PERXACTLY BAR AND GRILL.
DAVID RICHARDS SAID THEY ARE OPEN MONDAYS AND TUESDAY NOW,
AND MORE DAYS LATER.    AND, HE PLANS AN OPEN HOUSE SO EVERYONE
CAN STOP IN AND TAKE A LOOK.    BUT DON'T WAIT...YOU CAN STOP IN
ANYTIME ON MONDAY AND TUESDAY.

TEXAS GOVERNOR RICK PERRY IS COMING TO A PICNIC ON SUNDAY, AUGUST 10TH AT A BIN SITE A HALF-MILE WEST OF GRAND MOUND.   IT WILL BE
A FUNDRAISER FOR BRIAN SCHMIDT, REPUBLICAN CANDIDATE FOR THE IOWA SENATE.    IT WILL BE A 12 NOON LUNCH, DUTCH TREAT.

PROGRESS!   OUT BY THE NORTH MOTEL, A LOT OF DIRT MOVING
AND GRADING HAS BEEN DONE BY THE MAQUOKETA STATE BANK, OWNER
OF ACRES OF LAND AROUND THE MOTEL.    IT WAS ALL VERY HIGH GROUND AND UNEVEN AND THE WEEKS OF DIRT MOVING HAS REALLY MADE THE
AREA NICER AND THE LAND SHOULD NOW BE ENTICING TO A BUSINESS
PROSPECT.      A DEFINITE IMPROVEMENT!

TWO MORE NEW HOMES IN MAQUOKETA  (I THINK 6 SO FAR THIS YEAR).
BOTH IN THE SOUTHWEST SUBDIVISIONS.    BOTTOM ONE STARTED OUT AS
THE LATE ROSS DAVIS' REAL ESTATE OFFICE, THEN CONVERTED TO A SMALL
APARTMENT, AND NOW A FULL SIZE HOUSE.   PROJECT OF DENNIS
HASENBANK.    THEY WILL MOVE IN AND SELL THEIR HOME UP THE STREET.
HAVE NOT HEARD WHO IS BUILDING THE TOP HOME THAT IS LOCATED ON
THE SOUTH END OF FARMLAND DRIVE.
HERE'S A MAQUOKETA HOME THAT WILL SAVE ON HEAT THIS WINTER.
LOCATED ON WEST FARMLAND DRIVE.
THE FAMILY DOLLAR CLOSING SALE IS DONE AND THE BUILDING ON WEST PLATT STREET IS NOW DOWN TO FIXTURES AND,  NOTE THE FOR SALE/LEASE SIGN.    BIG NEWS TODAY, FAMILY DOLLAR WAS SOLD FOR OVER $8 BILLION TO DOLLAR TREE.   IT WILL TAKE UNTIL NEXT YEAR TO FINALIZE THE SALE.    AT LEAST AT THE START,  THE FAMILY DOLLAR STORES WILL STAY AS THEY ARE,  AND NOT BE TURNED IN DOLLAR TREE STORES.     WILL THIS SALE EFFECT THE BIG FAMILY DOLLAR DISTRIBUTION CENTER SOUTH OF MAQUOKETA?   WE ALL HOPE NOT!    WHO KNOWS, MAYBE WE WILL GET A DOLLAR TREE STORE
SOMETIME?
KURT ULLRICH ABOVE, OF RURAL MAQUOKETA, HAS A NEW PHOTO BOOK, "THE IOWA STATE FAIR".    IT HAS BLACK AND WHITE IMAGES THAT CAPTURE
THE ENERGY, THE COMPETITION, THE BRIGHT LIGHTS, AND THE CHARM
OF THE IOWA'S STATE  FAIR, ONE OF THE BIGGEST IN THE U.S.A.
KURT WILL SIGN COPIES THIS SATURDAY AFTERNOON AT THE PRAIRIE
LIGHTS BOOKSTORE AT 15 S. DUBUQUE STREET IN IOWA CITY.   HIS WIFE
IS RETIRED JUDGE, BOBBI ALPERS.

ABOVE, A NEW MOVIE OPENING THURSDAY NIGHT NATIONWIDE AND
HERE IN MAQUOKETA.   IT STARTS FRIDAY IN THE DIGITAL VOY 1
CINEMA AND IS RATED PG-13.    IT WILL OPEN THURSDAY NIGHT
AS THE 2ND MOVIE AT THE 61 DRIVE-IN THEATRE, FOR THOSE WHO
WANT A  SOONER CHANCE TO SEE IT.     THEN ON FRIDAY NIGHT
AT THE DRIVE-IN, IT WILL BE THE FIRST FEATURE.   MANY ARE PREDICTING
IT WILL BE THE BIGGEST MOVIE OF THE SUMMER.

POTTER'S MILL AT BELLEVUE WILL RE-OPEN SOON AS "FLATTED FIFTH
BLUES AND BBQ.    TOMORROW NOON, INVITED GUESTS WILL GET
AN ADVANCE LOOK AT IT AND I'LL BE THERE TO TAKE A FEW PHOTOS
TO LET YOU SEE HERE ON TUESDAY'S DAILY REPORT.
