YESTERDAY WAS A NICE DAY, WITH HIGH OF 40. GOT DOWN TO 5 LAST NIGHT AND TODAY, AGAIN IN THE MID 30'S. WEATHER SHOULD BE OKAY FOR NEW YEAR'S EVE AND NEW YEAR'S DAY.

A BALDWIN HOME WAS DAMAGED BY FIRE YESTERDAY AFTERNOON....THE HOME OF KERMIT BODENHOFER ON 49TH AVENUE, RURAL BALDWIN. MAQUOKETA FIRE CHIEF MARK BECK SAID ONE BEDROOM WAS DESTROYED. BALDWIN FIRST RESPONDERS WERE CALLED AND THEY CALLED MAQUOKETA SOON AFTER AND BY THE TIME MAQUOKETA ARRIVED, THE THREE BALDWIN FIREFIGHTERS HAD THE FIRE NEARLY PUT OUT. BECK SAID THE CAUSE IS NOT KNOWN AND THE FIRE IS NOT SUSPICIOUS.
BODENHOFER DID NOT HAVE INSURANCE. DAMAGES LISTED AT $10,000. FIREMEN SPENT AN HOUR AT THE FIRE.

A LONGTIME MAQUOKETA TEACHER AND GOLFER AND BOWLER DIED SUDDENLY YESTERDAY AT GENESIS EAST IN DAVENPORT. THE FULL OBITUARY OF ALICE BURMAHL, AGE 69, CAN BE READ AT www.carsonandson.com

GO HAWKS TOMORROW.

HAVE A HAPPY NEW YEAR. IF YOU GET A CHANCE, SEE THE HIT MOVIE "MARLEY AND ME". YOU'LL LIKE IT.
