IT IS RAINING AGAIN TODAY IN MAQUOKETA.
1 AND 3/10 YESTERDAY AND OVERNIGHT UNTIL 6 THIS MORNING.   IT WILL
PROBABLY COME CLOSE TO 2 INCHES BEFORE IT IS ALL OVER.

A MAQUOKETA NATIVE WAS KILLED AS A SERVICEMAN WHILE SERVING
AT JOLO ISLAND, PHILIPPINES.       STAFF SGT. JACK MAYFIELD MARTIN III,
AGE 26, DIED SEPTEMBER 29TH AFTER HIS VEHICLE STRUCK AN IMROVISED EXPLOSIVE DEVICE.   HE WAS THE YOUNGEST OF 5 CHILDREN, BORN IN
MAQUOKETA TO JACK AND CHERYL MARTIN, NOW OF BETHANY, OKLAHOMA.
HE IS SURVIVED BY HIS WIFE, ASHLEY, OF TACOMA, WASHINGTON, AND
HIS PARENTS AND ONE BROTHER AND THREE SISTERS.

RICK GARIEN, OF MAQUOKETA , AND LONGTIME EMPLOYEE OF GARIEN PLUMBING
IN MAQUOKETA, WAS STRICKEN WITH AN UNKNOWN ILLNESS IN AUGUST.
HE WAS HOSPITALIZED IN IOWA CITY FOR 3 WEEKS AND THE MAYO CLINIC FOR
1 WEEK AND CONTINUES TO MAKE TRIPS TO MAYO HOPING FOR A DIAGNOSIS OR
TREATMENT.     DUE TO THE HIGH COST OF RICK'S CONTINUED CARE AND
HIS WIFE JULIE'S LEAVE OF ABSENCE FROM HER TEACHING JOB, THE GARIEN
FAMILY IS HOLDING A BENEFIT TO H ELP DEFER THE COSTS.   THE BENEFIT WILL BE SPONSORED BY ST. MARK'S EPISCOPAL CHURCH AND WILL BE HELD NOVEMBER 7TH.    IT WILL INCLUDE A SOFTBALL TOURNAMENT AT TIMBER LANES, A BOWLING TOURNAMENT ALSO, AND A DINNER AND DANCE THAT NIGHT AT THE EAGLES CLUB.

SALE.    A COUPLE YEARS AGO, RICK'S BROTHER RON, HAD A STROKE, AND
IS  UNABLE TO WORK.   EARLIER THIS YEAR, RICK'S SON WHO WORKED FOR THE
COMPANY WAS KILLED IN AN AUTO ACCIDENT.     THE BOY'S MOTHER, LOIS,
DECIDED TO CLOSE THE BUSINESS AND PUT THE BUILDINGS AND EQUIPMENT
FOR SALE.    THE GARIENS HAVE DONE A LOT OF MY WORK OVER THE YEARS,
ESPECIALLY AT THE DRIVE-IN THEATRE.      ANYONE WANTING TO SEND A CHECK
CAN SEND IT TO ME AND I  WILL GET IT TO THE FAMILY.     

WILL HAVE A REPORT TOMORROW ON OUTCOME OF TONIGHT'S BIG FOOTBALL
GAME BETWEEN THE CARDINALS AND THE SABERS, IN DEWITT.
