THURSDAY DAILY REPORT

SUNSHINE AND SEVENTIES...
NOW THROUGH THE WEEKEND!

GOOD NEWS TODAY FOR MAQUOKETA AND JACKSON COUNTY!!
WELLMARK BLUE CROSS AND BLUE SHIELD ANNOUNCED TODAY THE TEN $7,500 AWARD WINNERS OF ITS 75TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION.
AND ONE OF THE WINNERS IS JACKSON COUNTY.     THERE WERE 100 ENTRIES,  ALL AIMED AT IMPROVING OVERALL COMMUNITY HEALTH AND
WELLNESS IN THEIR COMMUNITIES.     THE PUBLIC HAD TO CHANCE TO
WEIGH IN ON THEIR FAVORITE PROJECTS.   MORE THAN 84,000 VOTES WERE RECEIVED DURING THE 19 DAY VOTING PERIOD THAT ENDED SEPTEMBER 7TH.     LOCALLY, THE $7,500 GIFT WILL BE FOR A NEW "FOOT AND BIKE BRIDGE" IN THE NEWLY ACQUIRED PRAIRIE CREEK RECREATION AREA JUST
EAST OF MAQUOKETA,  THAT WAS IN THE BOB MARTIN WILL FOR JACKSON COUNTY AND THAT WILL BE DEVELOPED AND MANAGED BY JACKSON COUNTY CONSERVATION.    BOB MARTIN WAS A LONGTIME AUTO DEALER IN MAQUOKETA IN THE 50'S, 60'S AND 70'S.     THE APPLICATION FOR THE
WELLMARK GIFT WAS A JOINT EFFORT OF THE MAQUOKETA FAMILY YMCA AND THE FRIENDS OF JACKSON COUNTY.      THE APPLICATION WAS PREPARED BY ANN BURNS OF JACKSON COUNTY CONSERVATION, KERRY SCHEPERS, LOCAL BUSINESS OWNER AND BY SCOTT WARREN DIRECTOR
OF THE YMCA.   THEY ALSO PROMOTED THE "GET ON-LINE AND VOTE" FOR THE PROJECT.     SCHEPERS TOLD KMAQ NEWS TODAY THAT OFFICIALS FROM BLUE CROSS AND BLUE SHIELD WILL BE COMING TO MAQUOKETA TO MAKE THE PRESENTATION IN THE NEXT COUPLE WEEKS.
TOOK THE ABOVE PHOTO SUNDAY AT A NEW HIGH SCHOOL IN DESOTA, WISCONSIN (WHERE MCHS GRAD DARON FUGLSANG TEACHES AND COACHES WRESTLING) OF A NEW WATER FOUNTAIN THAT HAS A PLACE TO FILL YOUR WATER BOTTLE.    DRINKING WATER HAS COME A LONG WAY IN THE LAST 10 YEARS....MUCH OF IT AT A DOLLAR OR TWO OR MORE.    I STILL
HAVE NO PROBLEM DRINKING COOL MAQUOKETA WATER OUT OF A FAUCET.
HAD NEVER SEEN ONE OF THE ABOVE, SO TOOK THE PHOTO.

THIS WEEKEND, RESIDENTS CAN GET RID OF PRESCRIPTION OR OTHER DRUGS NOT BEING USED DURING A "CLEAN-OUT OUR MEDICINE CABINET EVENT".    JACKSON COUNTY PREVENTION COALITION IS HOSTING THE EVENT AT THE JACKSON COUNTY  SENIOR  CENTER ON EAST QUARRY
STREET, NEAR THE ENTRANCE TO THE FAIRGROUNDS.    DROP THE OLD MEDICINE OFF BETWEEN 10 A.M. AND 2 P.M.    THERE IS ALSO A DROP-OFF
AT THE LOBBY OF THE MAQUOKETA POLICE STATION.

NANCY ROLING REMINDS PROPERTY OWNERS THAT THE DEADLINE TO
PAY THE FIRST HALF OF PROPERTY TAXES IS NEXT WEEK.   THEY MUST
BE PAID OR POSTMARKED NO LATER THAN SEPTEMBER 30TH.

A MINOR ACCIDENT YESTERDAY AFTERNOON.   BROOKLYN MANDERS, AGE 16, WAS DRIVING NORTH ON SOUTH MAIN AND ATTEMPTED TO TURN LEFT ONTO SUMMIT.   POLICE SAY SHE DID NOT YIELD TO AN ONCOMING CAR DRIVEN BY WENDY DUNNE, AGE 40, OF BELLEVUE AND THE TWO CARS
COLLIDED.     DAMAGES OF $2,500 TO THE MANDERS 2003 CHEVY AND
$1,000 DAMAGE TO DUNNE'S 2002 CHRYSLER.   NO INJURIES AND MANDERS WAS CHARGED.

I FOUND THE BELOW YESTERDAY WHILE LOOKING FOR SOMETHING IN ONE OF MY MANY THEATRE FILES.   OLD AND YELLOWED.
BACK IN 1925, BOTH OXFORD JUNCTION AND PRESTON HAD A THEATRE AND THEY WERE OWNED BY THE SAME COMPANY THAT OWNED MAQUOKETA'S PASTIME THEATRE, WHICH WAS LOCATED WHERE THE DENTAL OFFICE IS
NOW, IN THE MIDDLE OF THE MAIN BLOCK.
LOST NATION AND BELLEVUE ALSO HAD A THEATRE.
NOTE, A DIFFERENT SILENT MOVIE EACH WEEKEND DAY IN THOSE TWO
SMALL TOWNS.  SOUND CAME A FEW YEARS LATER.     IN MAQUOKETA,
THEY HAD TWO, SOMETIMES THREE, DIFFERENT MOVIES EACH WEEK.
SUNDAY MONDAY AND TUESDAY....WEDNESDAY AND THURSDAY....AND FRIDAY AND SATURDAY.   IN 1925, I SOLD TICKETS FOR THE "WILD WILD SUSAN" MOVIE AND USHERED AT THE "BROKEN HEARTS OF BROADWAY"
MOVIE.    THAT'S HOW I GOT STARTED IN THE THEATRE BUSINESS!

DROP BY TOMORROW....AND I'LL BE HERE WITH MORE BS AND THE FRIDAY REPORT.
