AGAIN TODAY, WE WERE SUPPOSED TO GO OVER 90 DEGREES AND
ENDED UP AT 88 FOR A HIGH.
AGAIN TODAY, MOST SCHOOLS LEFT OUT 2 HOURS EARLY.
SLIGHT CHANCE OF RAIN AND COOLER TOMORROW.
THEN IN 80'S AGAIN SUNDAY AND MONDAY.

THE ALL-WOOD LITTLE BEAR PARK HAS SERVED THE COMMUNITY FOR 21 YEARS AND NOW MUCH OF IT IS IN NEED OF REPLACING.
THE CITY COUNCIL AND SCHOOL BOARD ARE  THINKING ABOUT REPLACING
IT WITH SOME KIND OF NEW PLAYGROUND.     A COMMITTEE HAS MET AND ANOTHER MEETING WILL BE AT 5:30 P.M. SEPTEMBER 13TH AND THE PUBLIC IS ENCOURAGED TO ATTEND.     THIS COULD BE AS MUCH AS A $200,000
PROJECT.   THE CITY AND SCHOOL DISTRICT HAVE INDICATED A WILLINGNESS TO EACH CONTRIBUTE $75,000 AND THE REST MIGHT
BE  RAISED THROUGH PUBLIC DONATIONS.    THE CITY IS WILLING TO  PAY BECAUSE IT IS IN A CITY PARK AND THE SCHOOL IS WILLING TO PAY BECAUSE IT IS ADJACENT TO BRIGG'S ELEMENTARY SCHOOL AND SCHOOL KIDS USE IT DURING RECESS I GUESS.
ONE THING TO CONSIDER....A WOOD STRUCTURE HAS ALWAYS BEEN
MORE POPULAR  THAN A PLASTIC ONE.   FOR A LONG TIME, THERE WAS
ALSO A NICE PLASTIC ONE IN LITTLE BEAR PARK, AND YOU HARDLY EVER
SAW KIDS PLAY ON IT.   THEY PREFERRED THE WOOD CLIMBING PLAY
AREA THAT IS NOW WEARING OUT.     ANOTHER PARK, THE 1ST WARD PARK HAS ALWAYS HAD THE PLASTIC TYPE, AND HAS ALWAYS HAD  WAY LESS ACTIVITY THAN AT LITTLE BEAR.
I GO PAST LITTLE BEAR A COUPLE TIMES A DAY, INCLUDING EVENINGS,
AND LITTLE KIDS ARE NOT THERE LIKE YEARS AGO.      WHY?   BECAUSE
THEIR PARENT(S) ARE NOT TAKING THEM!    KIDS LOVE TO PLAY AT
LITTLE BEAR....BUT PARENTS HAVE TO TAKE THEM.....AND MOST DON'T.
MAYBE, JUST MAYBE, PARK PLAYGROUNDS IN OUR SOCIETY ARE A THING OF THE PAST AND WE  DON'T NEED THEM.    IN THE WEEKS AHEAD,  WHEN  YOU ARE DRIVING PAST A PARK, START COUNTING THE KIDS THERE!

MAQUOKETA WILL HOST A FREE NIGHT OUT NEXT MONTH INSTEAD OF NATIONAL NIGHT OUT THAT HAS BEEN HELD IN THE PAST, IN AUGUST.
THE JACKSON COUNTY SHERIFF DEPARTMENT AND MAQUOKETA POLICE
DEPARTMENT WILL HOST THE EVENT FROM 5 UNTIL 8 P.M. ON TUESDAY,
SEPTEMBER 11TH, AT LITTLE BEAR PARK.    KID'S ACTIVITIES ARE PLANNED WITH WATER GAMES HOSTED BY THE FIRE DEPARTMENT.     FAMILIES ARE
ENCOURAGED TO BRING LAWN CHAIRS AND ENJOY A NIGHT OUT AGAINST
CRIME.   FREE FOOD WILL BE PROVIDED AND EVERYONE IS INVITED.

MAQUOKETA FOOTBALL TONIGHT...AT EPWORTH...A NON-DISTRICT GAME
AGAINST WESTERN DUBUQUE, STARTING AT 7:30.    BOTH TEAMS WON THEIR OPENER LAST FRIDAY NIGHT.   MATT CLARK WILL HAVE THE PLAY BY PLAY OF THE GAME AT 7:20 TONIGHT ON KMAQ-FM.

HAVE A GOOD WEEKEND.

THE "SHORE EVENTS CENTER" AT BELLEVUE.

HAD DINNER LAST NIGHT (CELEBRATING NANCY'S BIRTHDAY) AT "OFFSHORE
RESTAURANT" ALONG THE MISSISSIPPI RIVER AT BELLEVUE.    BEAUTIFUL NIGHT TO DINE OUTSIDE ON THEIR LARGE DECK, ABOVE.   WAS TOLD THAT THIS  UPPER DECK WILL BE GLASS ENCLOSED FOR
WINTER-TIME DINING AS WELL.  GOOD NEWS!
IN THE CENTER OF THE UPPER DECK PHOTO, NOTE THE WHITE STAGE WITH CANOPY  (ON IT "LIVE" MUSIC ON WEEKENDS) AND IN THE BACKGROUND, A RIVER ISLAND.   OFF TO THE RIGHT,  THE OUTSIDE BAR USED ON WEEKENDS.    THE COLORFUL PHOTO IS OF THE INSIDE BAR, JUST ACROSS FROM THE MAIN DINING ROOM.   THEY WERE GETTING READY FOR A WEDDING RECEPTION THIS SATURDAY IN THEIR EVENTS CENTER BUILDING RIGHT NEXT TO THE RESTAURANT.   IT SEATS AROUND 250.  AND DURING THE SUMMER, WEDDING GUESTS CAN ALSO SIT OUTSIDE AND VIEW THE MISSISSIPPI.     WE ARE FORTUNATE THAT JACKSON COUNTY BORDERS ONE OF THE GREAT RIVERS OF THE WORLD AND NOW FORTUNATE ALSO TO HAVE ANOTHER NICE RESTAURANT OVERLOOKING IT.     THE NEW HOTEL JUST NORTH OF THE RESTAURANT IS GOING UP AND WILL BE OPEN IN 2013.     STEVE AND DIANA JOINED US FOR DINNER AND WE ALL ENJOYED THE DELICIOUS FOOD AND EXCELLENT SERVICE.     TRIED THEIR PEACH COBBLER DESSERT TOO....SUPER....DON'T PASS IT UP!
BELLEVUE IS AN EXCITING LITTLE TOURIST TOWN WITH A NEW THEME...
"BELLEVUE ROCKS".     I ALWAYS  ENJOY A VISIT THERE AND LAST NIGHT, A VISIT TO ONE OF OUR GOOD KMAQ ADVERTISERS MADE FOR ANOTHER FUN NIGHT.     BEAUTIFUL BELLEVUE ALONG THE MIGHTY MISSISSIPPI RIVER!

THE VICTIM'S NAME WAS NOT RELEASED.     COURT RECORDS SHOW TRUE'S BLOOD ALCOHOL LEVEL REGISTERED .165.     TRUE IS THE OWNER AND
OPERATOR OF TRUE ... THE NAME OF THE RESTAURANT  ON THE HILL BY THE GOLF COURSE,  OWNED BY THE MAQUOKETA COUNTRY CLUB AND LEASED TO TRUE.

TWO MAQUOKETA ACCIDENTS WERE INVESTIGATED BY THE MAQUOKETA POLICE.   OFFICERS SAID TIMOTHY KELLY, AGE 68, OF MAQUOKETA WAS CHARGED WITH FAILURE TO YIELD FOLLOWING A TWO-VEHICLE ACCIDENT
WHICH HAPPENED AT 3:10 YESTERDAY AFTERNOON AAT PLATT AND
VERMONT STREETS.    KELLY PLANNED TO TURN LEFT AT THE INTERSECTION BUT DID NOT YIELD TO A VEHICLE DRIVEN BY DIANE ALBERT, AGE 40,
OF MAQUOKETA....AND THE TWO VEHICLES COLLIDED.   NO INJURIES AND BOTH VEHICLES RECEIVED ABOUT $2,000 IN DAMAGES.

AT ABOUT 7 YESTERDAY MORNING, A VEHICLE WAS HIT IN THE PARKING

THIS YEAR'S NEW "FARMER'S MARKET" HAS BEEN A BIG SUCCESS IN MAQUOKETA.    PLANNING STARTED BACK IN JANUARY BY A HARD-WORKING
VOLUNTEER COMMITTEE....AND IT PAID OFF.    THE EVENT EVERY TUESDAY SINCE JUNE IN THE PARKING LOT OF OHNWARD FINE ARTS CENTER HAS HAD
GREAT VENDORS AND GREAT SUPPORT BY THE COMMUNITY.    AND IT
CONTINUES UNTIL  OCTOBER 16TH.    LAST NIGHT, WHILE THE WEATHER
IS STILL WARM AND  IT IS STILL LIGHT AFTER 7, THE BOARD DECIDED TO
HAVE A POTLUCK-PICNIC FOR THE COMMITTEE AND VENDORS.   THERE WAS A GOOD TURNOUT!      I'M GLAD THEY INVITED NANCY AND I.....AS
IT WAS FUN AND THE TASTEY FOOD AND GOOD FELLOWSHIP WAS FUN TOO.   I ATE TOO MUCH OF COURSE AND LIKE AT ALL PICNICS....THERE WAS FOOD LEFT OVER!
THANKS TO  MARY HAYWARD (ABOVE LEFT) AND JUDY TONDERUM (ABOVE
RIGHT) FOR ORGANIZING IT.    THEY ARE COMMITTEE MEMBERS ALONG
WITH  TED STRAIT (THE THIN-HAIR  ONE ABOVE IN BLUE SHIRT) AND
LESLIE HAYES AND TOM DEVINE AND I PROBABLY FORGOT A COUPLE.
LAST NIGHT, THERE WERE 4 NEW VENDORS AND THE VENDORS LIST HAS
GROWN TO OVER 20.    LAST NIGHT, ALMOST EVERYONE SOLD-OUT BEFORE CLOSING AT 7.    THE MARKET OPENS EVERY TUESDAY AT 4 AND THE REAL BUSY HOUR IS THE FIRST HOUR FROM 4 UNTIL 5.     ONE LADY IS THERE

NO NEWS TODAY, SORRY!
CLEO ENGLISH IN ROCKFORD FOUND  THIS 1943 WEEKLY PASTIME THEATRE
SHOWBILL IN AN OLD SCRAPBOOK AND SENT IT TO ME.    HER MOM LIVED IN THIS AREA AND CLEO SAID HER MOM ALWAYS BOUGHT HER SHOES AT
SHOLL'S (AD IN UPPER RIGHT HAND CORNER).
NOTE ALL THE BUSINESS PLACES THAT BOUGHT ADS IN THE SHOWBILL.
THE DECKER HOTEL IS THE ONLY ONE STILL IN BUSINESS.
IN THOSE DAYS, THE THEATRE CHANGED MOVIES OFTEN.   THIS PARTICULAR
WEEK THERE WERE FIVE TO CHOOSE FROM DURING THE WEEK.
TWO WERE WESTERNS.    AND INTERESTING THAT ON THE BIGGEST NIGHT
OF THE WEEK, THE MOVIE WAS A GENE AUTRY WESTERN.
ADMISSION PRICES ARE NOT LISTED.
I OWNED THE PASTIME THE FINAL 3 MONTHS BEFORE IT WAS TORN DOWN....
NOVEMBER AND DECEMBER OF 1972 AND JANUARY OF 1973.
STILL HAVE SOME OF THE SEATS IN THE KMAQ BASEMENT.   THE
PROJECTIONIST FOR MANY YEARS WAS HOWARD BRINKER.
THANKS TO CLEO FOR SENDING THIS.    CLICK-ON THE PAGES TO ENLARGE THEM FOR EASIER READING.    REMEMBER, IN THOSE DAYS, THERE WAS NO TV, NO CASINOS, ETC.
AND I'VE BEEN TOLD THAT "BANK NIGHT" EACH WEEK WAS AN EXCITING
NIGHT  IN MAQUOKETA.   MANY COULD NOT GET A SEAT IN THE THEATRE, BUT STILL BOUGHT A TICKET AND STOOD OUTSIDE TO WAIT FOR THEIR NAME TO BE DRAWN.   YOU HAS TO BE PRESENT TO WIN.

TODAY, THE HIGH WAS 85.

THE MYSTERY IS OVER REGARDING THE FLOWER GARDEN ON HIGHWAY 136.

BARB SAYS THERE USED TO BE A WINDMILL THERE WHICH WAS KNOCKED DOWN BY A MOTORIST AND IT WOULD HAVE BEEN TO EXPENSIVE TO ERECT IT AGAIN.     JERRY TOOK SOME RAILROAD TIES, FIXED UP THE AREA THAT
SURROUNDED THE WINDMILL AND BARB STARTED PUTTING FLOWERS THERE.   SHE SAID JERRY TAKE CARE OF MOWING AND WATERING AND SHE TAKES CARE OF PLANTING, WEEDING, AND PRUNING.

NEW IN MAQUOKETA!
FOR 54 YEARS (AS LONG AS I HAVE LIVED HERE)  I HAVE NOT BEEN ABLE TO BUY AN  ORANGE JULIUS DRINK IN MAQUOKETA.
NOW I CAN!   AND DID LAST NIGHT!    NOW AVAILABLE AT BIEHL'S DIARY QUEEN.    ONE OF THE FIRST DQ'S TO ADD THE FROZEN BEVERAGE.
THIS DELICIOUS BEVERAGE DATES BACK TO 1926.   IMPROVED IN 1929 AND
IT REALLY BECAME A HIT AT THE LITTLE STAND OWNED BY JULIUS.
FANS WOULD WALK UP AND SAY...."GIVE ME AN ORANGE JULIUS!"
AND THAT'S HOW IT GOT ITS NAME.    IN THE 50'S, IT STARTED TO BE

WE HAD SOME EXCITEMENT AT KMAQ JUST AFTER 9 THIS MORNING.
WE WERE JUST ABOUT TO START THE PROGRAM "JUST TALK" AND WE
SMELLED SMOKE IN THE HALLWAY AND NOTICED A SLIGHT HAZE.
AFTER QUICKLY DECIDING IT WAS NOT A "BURNED OUT BALLAST",
WE DECIDED TO CALL 9-1-1 FOR THE FIRE DEPARTMENT.    BEFORE THEY ARRIVED, DOTTIE BAYLES SAID THE ODER WAS STRONGEST AT HER OFFICE
DOOR AND RIGHT NEXT TO THE REFRIGERATED WATER COOLER.
AND THAT WAS IT....GETTING UP CLOSER TO THE FOUNTAIN, THE  ODOR
BECAME STRONGER.    WHEN FIREMEN ARRIVED, THEY QUICKLY TOOK
OFF THE FRONT COVER AND SAW....WHAT YOU SEE ABOVE....A FOOT-LONG
BURNED WIRE.     AND WE CHECKED AND FOUND THAT THE BREAKER TO
THE OUTLET THERE WAS TRIPPED.    IF THE FIRE HAD HAPPENED OVERNIGHT, THE BREAKER TRIPPING WOULD HAVE PROBABLY  PREVENTED
AN OUTRIGHT FIRE.    THANKS TO A QUICK RESPONSE BY THE  POLICE, FIRE DEPARTMENT AND OTHERS!     WHEN KMAQ MOVED DOWN HERE IN
1970, SEARS CATALOG STORE WAS IN THAT HALF OF BUILDING.    AND
THAT COOLER WAS HERE THEN AND LEFT FOR US BY SEARS.   SO, IT IS
OVER 40 YEARS OLD AND WAS STILL WORKING FINE.    OVER THE YEARS, WE
DID NOTHING WITH IT, EXCEPT TO RELOAD THE REFRIGERANT.
I HAVE ALWAYS BEEN AMAZED AT HOW IT JUST KEPT WORKING AND WORKING FOR SOOOO LONG.
IT'S LIFE IS OVER!  WE WILL BE GETTING A NEW ONE!
CLICK-ON THE PHOTO TO ENLARGE IT!   JUST WHAT YOU CAME TO OUR WEB SITE TO SEE.....A BURNED-OUT WATER COOLER.
OH  YES..."JUST TALK"  WENT ON THE AIR 15  MINUTES LATE.
