WEDNESDAY DAILY

THIS PHOTO, AFTER A SHOWER LAST WEEK, WAS  TAKEN, LOOKING SOUTH,
AT MAQUOKETA'S BEST,  COMPLETED NEW STREET, NORTH VERMONT.
IT WAS IN BAD SHAPE.   ONE BLOCK NOW WITH A PERFECT SURFACE AND
ALL NEW IN PIPES UNDER IT TOO.    SHOULD LAST FOR MANY MANY YEARS!
SMOOTH DRIVING ON IT!    WHAT DID IT COST?   I EMAILED THE CITY MANAGER TO ASK AND HE HAS NOT GOTTEN BACK TO ME.
NOW, THE BAD PART.   THERE ARE PROBABLY A HUNDRED OR MORE BLOCKS
THAT NEED RE-BUILDING.   IS THERE A PLAN FOR DOING SO?    I HAVE SEEN
NONE!

MAQUOKETA IS LUCKY TO HAVE, JUST MINUTES AWAY ON THE CAVES ROAD,
A CAMP FOR KIDS....CAMP SHALOM.    THIS YOUNG MAN TALKED ABOUT IT
AT ROTARY TODAY.     FOR MORE ON THE CAMP, GO TO KMAQ'S HOME PAGE
AND CLICK ON THE ROTARY BUTTON.

I HAD NO DAILY YESTERDAY BECAUSE, TO HELP CELEBRATE NANCY'S BIRTHDAY YESTERDAY, WE WENT UP TO MILWAUKEE MONDAY AFTERNOON
AND RETURNED LAST NIGHT.     WAS WITH MY BROTHER WHO LIVES THERE.
THE CARDS WON MONDAY NIGHT.....AND THEY WON LAST NIGHT TOO.
THEY'RE GOING FOR A "WILD CARD" OF COURSE.       OH YES..AT THE PARK, BEER PRICED AT $9.     WATER $4.75.   18,000 IN ATTENDANCE THAT NIGHT AND THEY ARE HAVING PROFITABLE YEAR WITH OVER 2-MILLION TICKETS SOLD SO FAR.
MY BROTHER (RETIRED) AT FRIDAYS RESTAURANT, WHICH IS OPEN ALL YEAR AND LOCATED IN MILLER PARK, OVERLOOKING THE BALLFIELD.
WHILE EATING, WATCHED BATTING PRACTICE BELOW.
TUESDAY, DOWNTOWN TO SHOP AND CRUISE THE LAKE MICHIGAN
LAKEFRONT.    BOUGHT NANCY A NECKLACE (ON SALE) AT THE
BOSTON STORE, ONE OF MILWAUKEE'S OLDEST AND FINEST, COMPARABLE
TO MACYS.   BEAUTIFUL STORE.   IN ITS PRIME, 9 FLOORS, NOW 2.
ON THE WAY HOME,  A STOP AT THE "CAVES OF THE MOUND", ONE OF WISCONSIN'S OLDEST, POPULAR TOURIST ATTRACTIONS, ABOUT 2 HOURS FROM MAQUOKETA NORTH OF MADISON.   I HAD BEEN THERE TWICE YEARS AGO BUT NANCY HAD NEVER SEEN THEM.
THE ONE HOUR TOUR WAS COOL (50 DEGREES ALWAYS), WET,  LOTS
OF STEPS, AND WITH A FAT-MAN'S MISSERY...I MANAGED TO SQUEEZE
THROUGH.    VERY INTERESTING THINGS OF COURSE.   ADMISSION FOR US WAS OVER $30 TOTAL.

OKAY....I KNOW YOU DIDN'T BRING UP TODAY'S DAILY FOR A TRAVELOG!
SORRY!

SUNDAY DAILY

THE MAIN STREET CAFE WAS CLOSED A FEW WEEKS  FOR RE-DECORATING AND OPENED FRIDAY.    NOTE:   UPSTAIRS IS WHERE KMAQ STARTED IN AUGUST OF 1958..... AND WAS THERE UNTIL 1970.     THE GREEN IS THE GRASS WHERE THE HUGE FIRE WAS.    EQUIPMENT PICTURED IS BEING USED FOR THE RE-BUILDING OF MAIN STREET.
THE CAFE CEILING WAS "SUSPENDED" AS MOST ARE.   BUT, THEY TOOK
AWAY A LARGE SEGMENT AND NOW THE ORIGINAL CEILING IS EXPOSED.
NEAT.     WITH THE HIGH  CEILINGS IN THE OLD DAYS, HEAT WOULD RISE
TO THE TOP AND KEEP THE BUSINESS COOLER.
ANOTHER VIEW OF THE NEW DECOR AT THE CAFE, OPEN EVERY DAY.
REALLY LOOKS NICE...AND THEY HAVE  NICE DAILY SPECIALS.

A YEAR AGO, THIS PHOTO WOULD HAVE SHOWN THE OLD LAZY J
MOTEL ON WEST PLATT ST.      WHAT A CHANGE!     PART OF THE OLD MOTEL BUILDING IS NOW AN OFFICE BUILDING AND AT RIGHT, NEW (28) RENTAL
UNITS.

THURSDAY DAILY

TWO OF SEVERAL KEY MEN WORKING ON MAQUOKETA'S STREETSCAPE!   AT
LEFT, JOHN WANSNIDER AND RIGHT, ANDY GOETKEN, BOTH OF IIW ENGINEERS, THE CITY'S ENGINEERING FIRM FOR MANY YEARS.   JOHN IS ANDY'S BOSS AND HAS BEEN WITH THE DUBUQUE FIRM FOR AROUND 25 YEARS.   ANDY IS A DESIGN ENGINEER, A GRADUATE OF IOWA STATE UNIVERSITY.   HE HAS BEEN WITH  IIW FOR 3 YEARS.    HE WAS THE MAIN MAN DESIGNING THE MAQUOKETA PROJECT.   WHAT A JOB IT WAS.. AND IS.    LIKE WITH ANY GOOD MOVIE, IT HAS TO START FIRST WITH THE WRITER.     BAD STORY, BAD MOVIE!    BOTH JOHN AND ANDY ARE SPENDING A LOT OF TIME
IN MAQUOKETA CHECKING AND ADVISING ON THE PROJECT, BUT THERE IS
ONE MORE IIW PERSON HERE ALL THE TIME,  DAN SCHLYETER.    HE, RIDING
EVERYWHERE IN HIS GOLF CART, MAKES SURE EVERYTHING IS BEING DONE
RIGHT.   THE CONTRACTOR WORKS CLOSELY WITH DAN AND DAN CAN ADD, TAKE AWAY, OR MAKE CHANGES WHEN NECESSARY.   JOHN IS A BADGER FAN AS HE HAILS FROM MILWAUKEE AND ANDY, THOUGH AN ISU GRAD, IS
A  HAWKEYE FAN, LIVING WITH HIS WIFE (MARRIED LAST SEPTEMBER) NORTH
OF DUBUQUE.     I TOLD THEM THEY AND THE CONTRACTOR ARE DOING A
GREAT JOB AND THEY WERE GLAD TO HEAR THAT.     I'LL GET MORE PHOTOS
OF OTHER KEY MEN LATER, INCLUDING THE CONTRACTOR HIMSELF OF
COURSE.    AND I WON'T FORGET FRANK.

SOME PHOTOS I TOOK  LAST NIGHT...
THREE PHOTOS UP....TODAY, THEY POURED THE CENTER OF OF THIS
SECTION OF MAIN STREET.    THE TWO PLANTERS AT MAIN AND QUARRY
ARE FINISHED.   THERE WILL BE NO PLANTERS AT MAIN AND PLATT AND
THE OTHER FOUR PLANTERS WILL BE AT  MAIN AND PLEASANT.    STOP AND
GO LIGHTS NEEDS TO BE INSTALLED BEFORE MAIN AND  PLATT IS OPENED
IN MID-SEPTEMBER AND THERE WILL BE OTHER LIGHTS ON THOSE POLES
TO BETTER LIGHT UP THE BUSY INTERSECTION.    ALL THE OTHER NEW
LIGHT POLES WILL GO UP IN NOVEMBER AND CITY PUBLIC WORKS DIRECTOR FRANK ELLENZ AT THIS MORNING'S WEEK UPDATE MEETING AT CITY HALL
SAID NOT ONLY WILL BE POLES HOLD THE STREET LIGHTS, BUT ALSO
SPEAKERS, BANNERS AND CHRISTMAS DECORATIONS.    YES THE VOY
THEATRE REMAINS OPEN AS ALWAYS AND THOUGHT IT TAKES A LITTLE
DOING TO GET TO IT, THE EFFORT IS WORTH IT, IF ONLY FOR THE BEST
POPCORN ANYWHERE.     AND THIS WEEKEND, "PETE'S DRAGON" FOR ALL
THE FAMILY WILL BE WORTH THE EFFORT ALSO.

THE MAQUOKETA HIGH CLASS OF 1954 HAD SUCH A GOOD TIME AT THEIR
RE-UNION TWO YEARS AGO, THEY DECIDED TO HAVE ONE AGAIN THIS
SEPTEMBER AND HAD A PLANNING LUNCH TODAY AT THE DECKER.
NO SIR, THEY ARE NOT GOING TO WAIT FIVE YEARS  LIKE ALL OTHER CLASSES DO.    THEY WILL  HAVE IT AT HURSTVILLE INTERPRETIVE CENTER
SEPTEMBER 24TH.    ANN WILCOX EDLEMAN IN THE YELLOW SHIRT WAY BACK IN BOOTH IS AGAIN IN CHARGE AND SHE SAYS GRADS FROM BEFORE OR AFTER 1954 ARE WELCOME TO STOP IN  AFTER DINNER AROUND 8 P.M.
