OUR LAST 90-PLUS DEGREE DAY FOR AWHILE.
THANK GOODNESS!

MORE VOLUNTEERS ARE NEEDED TO HELP WITH BUILDING THE NEW LITTLE
BEAR PARK STRUCTURE IN SEPTEMBER.   THEY HAVE ONLY 75  SIGNED-UP
SO FAR AND WILL NEED ABOUT 300.    CALL CITY HALL AND SIGN-UP.
652-2484.

SPRUCE CREEK PARK CAMPGROUND NORTH OF BELLEVUE IS
AGAIN OPEN WITH LIMITED SITES AVAILBLE.

MOST OF  YOU HAVE HEARD ABOUT THE 6-YEAR-OLD BOY AT MICHIGAN
CITY, INDIANA WHO LAST FRIDAY WAS TRAPPED UNDER A HUGE SAND DUNE
AT THE INDIANA DUNES NATIONAL LAKESHORE.
AFTER 3 HOURS, RESCUERS PULLED THE BOY FROM UNDER 11 FEET OF SAND AND RUSHED HIM TO THE MICHIGAN CITY EMERGENCY ROOM WHERE
THEIR NEW  ER DOCTOR, MAQUOKETA NATIVE JUSTIN HEPKER, WAS ON
DUTY.    JUSTIN  KNEW ABOUT AN HOUR EARLIER THAT THE BOY WOULD
BE BROUGHT IN TO HIS ER ROOM.   WHEN HE ARRIVED, HE WAS NOT
RESPONDING MUCH, SAID HEPKER.     HE WAS COLD AND WAS IN SHOCK.
HE MAY HAVE BEEN SAVED BY AN AIR POCKET.     STILL HIS AIRWAY WAS
FILLED WITH SAND.     HEPKER SAID, "AS AN ER DOCTOR, YOU GO BACK TO BASICS, AND NOT PANIC...NOT GO OFF COURSE.   THAT'S WHAT WE ARE TRAINED FOR..TO STAY CALM".     HEPKER SAID HIS TEAM STABILIZED THE BOY AND HE WAS THEN AIRLIFTED TO CHICAGO.   HE IS RECOVERING THERE.
QUITE AN EXPERIENCE FOR JUSTIN, ONLY ABOUT 2 WEEKS ON THE JOB
AT THE HOSPITAL IN MICHIGAN CITY.

THESE TWO PHOTOS I TOOK AT THE CORNER OF SOUTH EILIZA AND SOUTH
MAPLE STREETS.     THE TOP PHOTO SHOWS THE CORNER NOT ADI
(AMERICAN DISABILITIES ACT) ACCEPTABLE AND THE BOTTOM PHOTO,
ACROSS THE STREET, SHOWS HOW THE CORNER RECENTLY WAS REDONE
TO BE ADA CORRECT.     I ASSUME THE FLOWERS ARE WILD FLOWERS,
WITH ADA APPROVAL.    ANYWAY, MAQUOKETA, AT A COST OF $10,000 A YEAR,
IS RE-DOING ALL CORNERS IN THE CITY.    MANY  HAVE ALREADY BEEN DONE
AND MANY ARE STILL ON THE LIST TO BE DONE.    YOU CAN CERTAINLY SEE
HOW MUCH NICER THE BOTTOM ONE IS, FOR A WHEELCHAIR OR EVEN WALKING WITH A CANE.

IN TOURNAMENT BASEBALL, THE MAQUOKETA BOY'S BASEBALL TEAM WILL
HOST THE DEWITT SABERS AT 7 P.M. TONIGHT.   DEWITT HAS BEATED
THE CARDS TWICE THIS YEAR AND HAS A BETTER RECORD.   BUT, IN
TOURNAMENT PLAY, ANYTHING CAN HAPPEN.  THE GAME WILL BE ON KMAQ
TONIGHT, WITH LEIGHTON HEPKER AT THE MIC.

CHECK HERE TOMORROW MORNING AND I WILL POST THE SCORE.

HAVE A GOOD WEEKEND.
