THE MAQUOKETA VETERANS OF FOREIGN WARS (VFW) O'CONNOR-REGENWETHER POST 3633 SPONSORED THE LOCAL
"VOICE OF DEMOCRACY RADIO SPEAKING CONTEST" THIS
FALL. THE THEME OF THIS
NATIONAL VFW CONTEST IS
"DOES MY GENERATION HAVE A ROLE IN AMERICA'S FUTURE?"
THE ESSAY WAS RECORDED BY THE STUDENTS AT KMAQ AND
THEN THE JUDGES LISTENED TO THE CDS AND CHOSE THE TOP
3 WINNERS. THE WINNING ESSAY WAS BY ERICA DRAKE (LEFT), AGE 16, A SOPHOMORE
AT ANDREW HIGH SCHOOL AND THE DAUGHTER OF MARK AND LINDA DRAKE OF RURAL MAQUOKETA. ERICA
RECEIVED $150.00 FROM THE LOCAL VFW AND HER ESSAY WILL NOW BE JUDGED
AT THE DISTRICT LEVEL. THE STATE WINNER GOES ON TO A TRIP TO WASHINGTON, D.C. NEXT YEAR AND THE CHANCE TO WIN MORE MONEY FOR COLLEGE. TAKING SECOND PLACE LOCALLY WAS ALYSSA BAUGHMAN, AGE 16, A JUNIOR AT PRESTON HIGH SCHOOL. SHE RECEIVED $100. AND THIRD PLACE WAS
WON BY CAILEY OWEN, AGE 17, AND A JUNIOR AT MAQUOKETA COMMUNITY
HIGH SCHOOL. HER PARENTS ARE MIKE AND TARA OWEN OF MAQUOKETA.
SHE WON $50. SHOWN IN THE PHOTO IS MAQUOKETA VFW COMMANDER TOM
WATTERS PRESENTING THE $150 CHECK TO ERICA. I'M A VFW MEMBER AND IT
WAS MY PLEASURE TO BE THE CHAIRMAN OF THIS YEAR'S LOCAL CONTEST.
