IN THE 60'S TODAY...GREAT DAY...MORE COMING TOMORROW AND SUNDAY.

BRAD DEERY OF BURLINGTON AND FORMERLY OF MAQUOKETA, WILL BE
HONORED AS UNIVERSITY OF IOWA "DAD OF THE YEAR" TOMORROW DURING
IOWA'S GAME AGAINST NORTHWESTERN.    DEERY IS OWNER OF BRAD DEERY
MOTORS IN MAQUOKETA.     HE TOLD THE HAWK EYE NEWSPAPER THAT HE WAS
SHOCKED AND SURPRISED UPON HEARING THE NEWS OF HIS AWARD.   HE SAID
THE UNIVERSITY CALLED HIM AND TOLD HIM THAT HIS DAUGHTER HAD WRITTEN
AN ESSAY FOR "PARENT OF THE YEAR, ON PARENT'S WEEKEND".     HE SAID HE
WAS SELECTED AS DAD OF THE YEAR BASED ON THE WRITTEN STORY BY HIS
DAUGHTER, DOMINIQUE.    DOMINIQUE'S ESSAY LISTED TWO PAGES OF AWARDS
AND ACHIEVEMENTS THAT BRAD HAS RECEIVED.   IT MENTIONED THAT HER
MOTHER, MUGSEY, DIED OF CANCER WHEN SHE AND HER SISTER WERE YOUNG AND HOW HER DAD RAISED THEM.   SHE SAID HE DID A LOT AS A SINGLE PARENT TO
RAISE THE FAMILY.    BRAD DEERY SAID HE WAS TOLD HE WOULD WALK OUT ON THE 50-YARD-LINE AT HALF-TIME SATURDAY AND THEN THEY WILL ANNOUNCE HE IS DAD OF THE YEAR.    THEY WILL PRESENT HIM WITH A PLAQUE AND THEN HE WILL
WATCH THE REST OF THE GAME WITH THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNIVERSITY, SALLY MASON, IN THE PRESS BOX.    BRAD DEERY, AGE 50, HAS CAR DEALERSHIPS
IN BURLINGTON AND PLEASANT HILL, IN ADDITION TO MAQUOKETA.
DOMINIQUE, A STUDENT AT THE UNIVERSITY OF  IOWA  AND HER YOUNGER SISTER BRIDGETTE BOTH WORK FOR THEIR DAD SELLING CARS DURING THE SUMMER.
DOMINIQUE DEERY SAID HER DAD IS A GREAT BOSS AND IF HE WANTED TO
GO INTO BUSINESS WITH ME SOMEDAY, I'D BE  HONORED.    MAQUOKETA BUSINESSMAN BRAD DEERY PURCHASED THE FORMER RASMUSSEN MOTOR
SALES IN MAQUOKETA OVER 25 YEARS AGO.    AGAIN, HE WILL RECEIVE THE HONOR
OF IOWA DAD OF THE YEAR DURING THE  HALF-TIME OF TOMORROW'S IOWA-
NORTHWESTERN GAME IN IOWA CITY.

THE CITY OF MAQUOKETA CREWS BEGAN THE ANNUAL LEAF PICKUP TODAY.
A BIG JOB.
AND, CITY CREWS THIS WEEK ARE FINISHING UP THE PAINTING OF PARKING CONTROL STRIPES IN THE DOWNTOWN AREA.    MAIN AND PLATT ALWAYS LOOK SO
MUCH NICER WHEN  THE STRIPES ARE REPAINTED.   I THINK THEY SHOULD DO
THIS ABOUT 3 TIMES A YEAR.

FRANKLIN "BOO" REITER, AGE 81, OF HENNING, MINNESOTA, DIED TUESDAY AT A HOSPITAL IN WADENA.  HE WAS BORN IN MAQUOKETA, THE SON OF CARLYLE
AND HARRIET (MITCHELL) REITER AND HE GRDUATED FROM MAQUOKETA
HIGH SCHOOL.   HE SERVED DURING WORLD WAR 2 IN THE U.S. NAVY.
THEY OWNED A COFFEE SHOP AND DAIRY BAR IN HENNING AND RETIRED IN
199O.      HE IS SURVIVED BY HIS WIFE, RUBY, AND EIGHT CHILDREN.     NO SURVIVORS IN THE MAQUOKETA AREA.

MAQUOKETA  ARTIST ROSE FRANTZEN'S PROJECT, "PORTRAIT OF MAQUOKETA"
WAS UNVEILED LAST NIGHT AT THE SMITHSONIAN  NATIONAL PORTRAIT GALLERY
IN WASHINGTON, D.C.     MANY MAQUOKETA RESIDENTS WERE IN ATTENDANCE AND THEY WERE JOINED BY CONGRESSMAN BRUCE BRALEY FOR THE SPECIAL
EVENT.   BRALEY CALLED ON KMAQ'S "JUST TALK" SHOW THIS MORNING
AND REPORTED THAT IT WAS A GREAT NIGHT FOR MAQUOKETA AND
IOWA.    GO TO THE SMITHSONIAN WEB SITE AND LOOK FOR MORE INFORMATION
ABOUT THE FRANTZEN ARTWORK THAT WILL BE ON DISPLAY THERE UNTIL
NEXT SUMMER.   OVER A MILLION WASHINGTON D.C. VISITORS VISIT THE
SMITHSONIAN MUSEUMS EACH YEAR.
