ANOTHER BUSY DAY SO FAR
AT THE KMAQ FARM AND
HOME SHOW AT THE FAIRGROUNDS IN MAQUOKETA.
NEARLY 12-HUNDRED ATTENDED
YESTERDAY, WHICH WAS PORK
DAY. TODAY WAS BEEF DAY.
IT WAS 12 BELOW IN MAQUOKETA OVER NIGHT
AND TODAY IN THE TEENS.
THE WEATHER HAS HURT ATTENDANCE, BUT NOT THAT
MUCH. LAST NIGHT WAS SLOWER THAN USUAL, BUT
AT 7:20 AT THE CLOSE OF THE
SHOW, THE TEMPERATURE WAS
ALREADY 2 BELOW. ENJOY THE 9 PHOTOS I TOOK TODAY AND AS USUAL, CLICK-ON EACH PHOTO TO

FRIENDS OF AGRICULTURE FARMERS OF THE YEAR AT TODAY'S KMAQ FARM AND HOME SHOW. DAN IS A STEWART OF THE LAND WITH A GREAT INTEREST IN CONSERVATION OF
THE LAND. A BELIEVER IN
NO-TILL TILLAGE, HE HAS
ESTABLISHED TERRACES AND
PONDS ON HIS FARM. HE IS AN
FFA ALUMNI MEMBER AND
ACTIVELY PROMOTES AGRICULTURE ANY WAY HE CAN HERE IN JACKSON COUNTY.
THE PLAQUE YOU SEE IN PHOTO WAS PRESENTED ON STAGE BY ROBERT SHEARER, A MEMBER OF THE MAQUOKETA CHAMBER OF COMMERCE AG COMMITTEE. THE
CHAMBER AND THE MAQUOKETA ROTARY CLUB HAVE GIVEN THREE FRIENDS OF AGRICULTURE AWARDS YEARLY SINCE 1990. THE 22ND ANNUAL AWARDS
WERE PRESENTED ON STAGE AT 12:30 TODAY. A LOT OF NICE PEOPLE IN THE
AUDIENCE TO HELP HONOR THE AWARD WINNERS, WHO DID NOT KNOW IN ADVANCE
THAT THEY WERE GETTING THE AWARD, AFTER THE PRESENTER TOLD ABOUT
THEIR LIFE.

PRESENTED HELEN WITH THE AG PUBLIC SERVICE PERSON AWARD.
IT WAS HER LATE HUSBAND BILL AS A ROTARIAN, THAT STARTED
THE FARM AND HOME SHOW
FRIENDS OF AGRICULTURE AWARDS FOR KMAQ, BACK IN
1990. SHE AND BILL SERVED
TOGETHER IN THE PEACE CORP IN COSTA RICA 1980 TO 1983,
INSTRUCTING HOW TO FARM BETTER. WHEN BILL WAS ACTIVE AS FFA ADVISOR, SHE WAS THEIR TO SUPPORT HIM LOCALLY AND IN STATE FUNCTIONS. SHE HAS BEEN ACTIVE IN THE FFA ALUMNI AND WITH THE MAQUOKETA LIBRARY, COUNTY ZONING COMMISSION, AND THE
HISTORICAL SOCIETY. WHEN ONE ATTENDS A MAQUOKETA OR COUNTY FUNCTION, ESPECIALLY IF AG RELATED, HELEN IS THERE.

YEAR, AS A MEMBER OF THE

AWARD WINNERS, DAN AND DICK
KUNAU, PARTNERS IN KUNAU
IMPLEMENT, PRESTON AND
DEWITT. THE POPULAR IH IMPLEMENT BUSINESS WAS STARTED BY THEIR FATHER, ROBERT, 75 YEARS AGO.

HENTON IN THE BACK AND HIS
FRIEND TO THE RIGHT, DAN BUDDE OF CLINTON, WITH
HITS OF THE PAST FROM 11 UNTIL 3 TODAY. RED HAS
ENTERTAINED AT OUR FARM
SHOW ALMOST EVERY YEAR
SINCE WE STARTED IN THE 1980'S. HIS VOICE IS CLEAR AND SHARP JUST LIKE IT WAS WAY BACK THEN AND HE TURNED
90 LAST FALL.
THE KMAQ FARM AND HOME SHOW IS NOT WELL ATTENDED
BY YOUNGER FAMILIES. WAS
GLAD TO SEE CARSON STRUVE AND HIS WIFE KALLA AT THE
SHOW TODAY, FARMERS FROM
RURAL MILES. KELLY, AGE
10 MONTHS , REALLY LIKED THE
RASPBERRY T-N-T CONE SHOP
ICECREAM.

IN MAQUOKETA FOR BRINGING
DOWN THEIR SOFT-SERVE
ICECREAM MACHINE.

BEEN AT THE JOB FOR 30 YEARS.
HE WAS A HIT TODAY WITH A LOT PEOPLE AND ANSWERED
SOME OF THEIR QUESTIONS.
GLAD HE MADE THE LONG TRIP
FROM DES MOINES TO BE WITH US. WILL WE HAVE A WHITE CHRISTMAS IN IOWA THIS YEAR? I FORGOT TO ASK!

CATTLEMAN, CHARLIE SCHNECKLOTH, RURAL PRESTON, IN LINE FOR A HAMBURGER.
WONDER HOW MANY HE
HAS ENJOYED IN HIS LIFETIME.
A FEW STEAKS ALONG THE WAY TOO. YES...I'M SURE HE ALSO
TREATS HIMSELF TO PORK
AND CHICKEN OCCASSIONALLY.
HERE'S JIM FOSTER OF RURAL MAQUOKETA ....A 1969 GRADUATE OF MAQUOKETA HIGH SCHOOL AND FOUNDER OF FOSTER FAMILY MUSIC IN THE QUAD CITIES. HE HAS BEEN AT ALMOST ALL OF OUR FARM AND HOME SHOWS WITH ORGANS AND PIANOS. THE BUSINESS IS NOW
OWNED BY HIS DAUGHTER BUT HE AND HIS WIFE GO DOWN TO
HELP OUT 2 OR 3 DAYS A WEEK.
HIS MOTHER, NOW 88, STILL LIVES IN MAQUOKETA. HE
STARTED THE BUSINESS IN 1984,
DURING BAD ECONOMIC TIMES
AND HIGH INTEREST RATES.
SAYS HE HAD TO TALK TO OVER
30 BANKS BEFORE HE FOUND ONE THAT WOULD GIVE HIM A LOAN.
