IT WAS SUPPOSE TO RAIN TODAY.
WE COULD USE A LITTLE RAIN.
NOTHING YET.
BUT IT IS STILL IN THE FORECAST FOR WEDNESDAY AND THURSDAY, THEN
A NICE FORECAST FOR THE FRIDAY-MONDAY 4-DAY HOLIDAY.
HIGH TODAY IN THE 80'S.

THE JACKSON COUNTY BOARD OF SUPERVISORS TODAY TURNED DOWN AN OFFER FROM A MAQUOKETA AREA BUSINESSMAN WHO WANTED TO BUY THE FORMER S & H
BUILDING IN MAQUOKETA'S INDUSTRIAL PARK. THEY SAID THEY WOULD SEND
A LETTER TO GARY DREW DECLINING HIS OFFER OF$208,000. DREW WANTED TO MOVE HIS BIODIESEL PLANT FROM RURAL MAQUOKETA TO THE BUILDING.
THIS MORNING, SUPERVISOR STEVE FLYNN SAID THE BUILDING, DONATED TO THE COUNTY A COUPLE YEARS AGO, WAS APPRAISED AT MORE THAN $1 MILLION.
SUPEVISOR LARRY KOOS SAID HE WASN'T READY FOR WHAT HE CALLED A
FIRE SALE OF THE BUILDING AND SUPERVISOR JACK WILLEY SAID DREW DID NOT PROVIDE A GUARANTEE OF NEW JOBS WITH THE MOVE.

LAST NIGHT, I DROVE THROUGH DEWITT'S LARGE INDUSTRIAL PARK AND
COUNTED AT LEAST 5 LARGE FORMER INDUSTRY BUILDINGS FOR SALE.
SO, THERE IS NO SHORTAGE OF VACANT INDUSTRIAL BUILDINGS IN THIS AREA. BECAUSE OF THE ECONOMY, NATIONWIDE, THERE MUST BE THOUSANDS. SO, SOMEDAY THE SUPERVORS MAY HAVE TO SELL IT CHEAP TO GET IT BACK ON THE TAX ROLLS.

THE VOLLEYBALL SEASON STARTS TONIGHT FOR THE MAQUOKETA HIGH SCHOOL GIRL'S TEAM.
THEY WILL BE PLAYING IN THE PRESTON TOURNAMENT.

MAQUOKETA NOW HAS 9 DENTISTS! NOT MANY TOWNS OUR SIZE HAVE THIS MANY. GOOD FOR THE LOCAL ECONOMY AS THEY BRING A LOT OF
PEOPLE TO MAQUOKETA FROM THE SURRONDING AREA. PROBABLY FOUR
OF THE NINE HAVE CUT BACK AND DO NOT PUT IN THE HOURS THEY USED TO.

THAT'S IT TODAY FOR AN "OPEN WIDE" REPORT.

ANOTHER TERRIFIC DAY....SUNNY AND HIGH OF 75.
MORE OF THE SAME FOR THE NEXT FEW DAYS.

THE HOSPITAL BOARD MET THIS TUESDAY AND SAY THEY WANT TO DUST OFF THEIR BUILDING PLANS AND TAKE ANOTHER LOOK AT EXPANSION.
BOARD MEMBER DWAIN TRENKAMP SAID 85 PERCENT OF THE HOSPITAL'S BUSINESS IS OUTPATIENT BUSINESS. TRENKAMP BELIEVES THE BOARD NEEDS TO TAKE ANOTHER LOOK AT THE EXPANSION PLAN AND MAKE IT MORE USER FRIENDLY FOR OUTPATIENTS. HE SAID THE TREND IS FOR OUTPATIENT NUMBERS TO INCREASE.
HE BELIEVE THEY NEED TO REVAMP TH THEIR PLANS TO ACCOMODATE THE CHANGES.
HE SAID THE HOSPITAL'S FUTURE IS DEPENDENT ON OUTPATIENT SERVICES.
HOSPITAL ADMINISTATOR CURT COLEMAN SAID THERE ARE PEOPLE AT GENESIST THAT CAN HELP REVISE THE LOCAL MASTER SITE PLAN. COLEMAN ALSO SAID
THEY NEED TO LOOK AT THE AIR HANDLER UNITS AT THE HOSPITAL WHICH ARE MORE THAN 30 YEARS OLD. HE SAID THE HOSPITAL NEEDS TO BE MORE ENERGY EFFICIENT AND FOCUS ON OUTPATIENT SERVICES. THERE IS SOME MINOR REMODELLING GOING ON NOW AT THE HOSPITAL. THE S-H-I-P OFFICES ARE BEING MOVED TO THE FORMER PHYSICAL THERAPY OFFICES AND THE MEDICAL
RECORDS WILL BE SHIFTED TO CARDIAC REHAB.
LAST NIGHT WAS THE DEADLINE FOR HOSPITAL BOARD FILING OF PAPERS FOR THE NOVEMBER GENERAL ELECTION. GLORIA JORGENSEN AND MIKE NICKESON
BOTH FILED PAPERS BY THE DEADLINE, TO KEEP THEIR PRESENT POSITION
ON THE HOSPITAL BOARD. SINCE NO OPPOSITION, BOTH WILL BE ELECTED TO NEW 6-YEAR TERMS.

HOT TODAY....86 PLUS HUMID...THEN THE RAIN CAME AT 4 P.M. MORE RAIN
TONIGHT, BUT LOOKING GOOD FOR SATURDAY, SUNDAY AND MONDAY.

THE JACKSON COUNTY BOARD OF SUPERVISORS WERE GIVEN AN OFFER TO BUY THE FORMER S & H BUILDING IN THE INDUSTRIAL PARK. THE OFFER CAME FROM GARY DREW WHO WANTS TO MOVE HIS BIODIESEL PLANT TO THE SITE.
SUPERVISORS ACCEPTED THE SEALED OFFER BUT DID NOT OPEN IT AND SAID
THEY WOULD TALK TO THEIR COUNTY ATTORNEY FIRST. THE ISSUE
IS EXPECTED TO BE ON THE AGENDA OF THE SUPERVISORS NEXT TUESDAY.
TODAY, DREW SAID HE HAS NOT HEARD FROM THE SUPERVISORS. HE SAID
HE OFFERED MORE THAN $200,000 FOR THE BUILDING. HE SAID HE IS RUNNING
OUT OF ROOM AT HIS RURAL MAQUOKETA LOCATION. THE S & H BUILDING,
ZONED INDUSTRIAL, WAS DONATED TO THE COUNTY A COUPLE YEARS AGO.
DREW SAID HIS COMPANY IS GROWING AT A FAST PACE AND NOW HAS 5 EMPLOYEES.
HE SAID THE PLANT IS HIGHLY AUTOMATED AND SO IT DOES NOT REQUIRE
A LOT OF EMPLOYEES. DREW SAID THE SUPERVISORS HAVE HAD A LOT THROWN AT THEM WITH MOTHER NATURE IN THE LAST FEW MONTHS. HE SAID HE
THOUGHT THE MONEY FOR THE BUILDING MIGHT GIVE TEH SUPERVISORS
ANOTHER OPTION TO HELP SOLVE THE COST ISSUE TO REPAIR THE GREEN ISLAND
LEVEES.

THE FIRST MEETING WAS HELD YESTERDAY AND THE MAQUOKETA MUNICIPAL
ELECTRIC UNION EMPLOYEES ARE ASKING FOR A 5 PERCENT WAGE INCREASE.
THE MMEU BOARD OFFERED 1 PERCENT AND THE UNION TURNED DOWN THAT

THE PLAYGROUND WAS CONSTRUCTED BY VOLUNTEERS STARTING IN JULY AND WAS FINISHED UP A COUPLE DAYS AGO. THERE ARE CLIMBING AREAS, BALANCING

HOT FOR A WEEK!
NOW, DID WE EVER GET RELIEF TODAY!
68 TODAY'S HIGH. CLOUDY ALL DAY, SOME LIGHT RAIN OVER THE NOON HOUR.
WARMER TOMORROW AND FOR REST OF WEEK.

THE JACKSON COUNTY BOARD OF SUPERVISORS SAY THEY WILL FORM A
COMMITTEE TO ONCE AGAIN LOOK AT THE USE OF ATV'S ON BOTH COUNTY
ROADS AND CITY STREETS. LOTS OF INTEREST IN THAT, AND THERE WILL BE LOTS OF OPPOSITION TOO. THE ISSUE WAS DISCUSSED AT THIS MORNING'S WEEKLY SUPERVISOR MEETING AT THE COURTHOUSE. LIABILITY, NOISE AND DUST ARE THE THREE THINGS THE SUPERVISORS ARE CONCERNED ABOUT.
IOWA LAW CURRENTLY FORBIDS ATV'S ON COUNTY ROADS, UNLESS THE LOCAL
COUNTY SUPERVISORS MAKE EXCEPTIONS. IN CITIES, ATV OPERATORS ARE
INTERESTED IN BEING ABLE TO DRIVE AN ATV TO A GAS STATION OR A
RESTAURANT.

THE MAQUOKETA CITY COUNCIL FINANCE COMMITTEE WILL BE RECOMMENDING
TO THE FULL COUNCIL THAT THE CITY SELL THE OLD SWIMMING POOL, LAND
AND BATHHOUSE TO THE MAQUOKETA COMMUNITY SCHOOL DISTRICT, FOR
$1.00 AND THAT IT WOULD THEN BE UP TO THE SCHOOL DISTRICT TO ELIMINATE
BOTH THE POOL AND THE BATHHOUSE AND IT IS ANTICIPATED THAT THE
DISTRICT WOULD CONVERT THE LAND TO A PARKING LOT ACROSS FROM THE
FOOTBALL FIELD. MORE ON THIS COMING AND I'LL KEEP YOU P OSTED.

THE CITY COUNCIL ALSO LAST NIGHT TALKED ABOUT FORMING A COMMITTEE
TO TAKE ANOTHER LOOK AT A PROPOSED STREETSCAPE FOR DOWNTOWN
MAQUOKETA. THE TOPIC CAME UP DURING A DISCUSSION OF THE 2010
GOALS SET BY THE COUNCIL LATE LAST YEAR. NOW THAT THE FIRE SITE CLEANUP IS DONE, THE COUNCIL IS INTERESTED IN COMING UP WITH A PLAN AND
A STREETSCAPE WOULD INCLUDE NEW WATER AND SEWER LINES, AS THE CURRENT
INFRASTRUCTURE ON MAIN STREET IS 100 YEARS OLD. AGAIN, SOUNDS LIKE WE'LL BE HEARING A LOT MORE ABOUT THIS IN THE NEAR FUTURE.
I HOPE SO!

I JUST GLANCED OUT THE FRONT WINDOW. NO SNOW.

TAKE IT EASY UNTIL TOMORROW.

THE CITY OF MAQUOKETA HAS BEEN NOTIFIED BY THE D.O.T THAT THE TRAFFIC

THEY ARE DOING THAT TODAY. THEY HAVE BEEN FLASHING YELLOW ON PLATT AND RED ON THE OFF RAMPS. THE D.O.T. TOLD THE CITY MANAGER THEY

FLASHING LIGHTS. THE PLAN WON'T BE CHANGED. FROM NOW ON, MOTORISTS

MY 61 DRIVE-IN THEATRE OPENED 60 YEARS AGO TODAY. HERE IS HOW THE
WOOD SCREEN LOOKED THAT DAY. A SMALL TORNADO BLEW IT DOWN
IN THE LATE SUMMER OF 1960. A STEEL SCREEN REPLACED IT AND WAS USED AT THE START OF THE 1961 SEASON. THAT SCREEN WAS TOPPLED IN THE SPRING OF 1995, AGAIN BY TORNADO LIKE WINDS. A MONTH LATER IT WAS REPLACED AND IS THE ONE USED TODAY. IN THE 50'S, THERE WERE OVER 50 DRIVE-IN THEATRES IN IOWA. TODAY, JUST 4. THE OTHER 3 ARE NEAR NEWTON, NEAR SPIRIT LAKE, AND AT THE EDGE OF GRANDVIEW. A NEW ONE OPENED IN CENTERVILLE TWO
YEARS AGO, BUT IT HAS CLOSED AND DID NOT OPEN THIS SEASON.
OUR ANNIVERSARY WEEK HAS BEEN GOOD AND FUN.....WE HAVE SOLD A RECORD
NUMBER OF HOTDOGS IN ONE WEEK. TWO MORE NIGHTS OF THE WEEK LONG
CELEBRATION.

THE 61 DRIVE-IN THEATRE FIVE MILES SOUTH OF MAQUOKETA ON HIGHWAY 61 WILL BE 60 YEARS OLD AUGUST 11TH. I HAVE OWNED IT SINCE 1972. THE ONE- WEEK 60TH BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION WILL BE TOMORROW AND END NEXT THURSDAY. WE WILL FEATURE 60 CENT HOTDOGS, 60-CENT POP AND 60-CENT
POPCORN ALL WEEK AND WE WILL HAVE A REGISTRATION FOR 60 TEN-DOLLAR
GIFT CARDS. SHOWN ABOVE IS GEORGE WRAY OF CEDAR RAPIDS. HE HAS BEEN RETIRED FOR NEARLY A DOZEN YEARS FROM ROCKWELL (FORMERLY COLLINS RADIO) IN CEDAR RAPIDS AND THE WEEKEND AFTER THIS, WILL BE BACK HERE IN HIS HOMETOWN OF MAQUOKETA TO ATTEND HIS 50TH CLASS REUNION OF THE
MAQUOKETA HIGH SCHOOL CLASS OF 1960. THIS PHOTO WAS TAKEN LAST WEEK
AT THE DRIVE-IN WHEN GEORGE CAME TO THE MOVIES WITH HIS WIFE, AND SON AND GRANDCHILDREN. GEORGE WORKED AT THE 61 IN 1958, 59 AND 60 AS A
PROJECTIONIST AND SPEAKER REPAIRMAN. HE WAS HIRED BY THE OWNER,
WALT ALLEN AND MANY TIMES WORKED 7 NIGHTS A WEEK. BUT WHEN HE HAD
NIGHTS OFF, THE PROJECTIONIST WAS ONE OF HIS HIGH SCHOOL TEACHERS,
DON SCHLOFELDT, ALSO A BASKETBALL COACH AT MCHS. DON HAD JUST ONE
ARM, TO GEORGE CAME UP WITH A PIECE OF EQUIPMENT THAT ALLOWED
DON TO MAKE THE SWITCH-OVER EVERY 20 MINUTES USING JUST HIS ONE ARM.
GEORGE WAS AT THE DRIVE-IN THE SUMMER NIGHT IN 1960 THAT THE ORIGINAL
WOODEN SCREEN WAS BLOWN DOWN BY A MINI TORNADO. HE IMMEDIATLEY CALLED HIS BOSS, WALT, AND SAID THERE COULD BE NO MOVIE TONIGHT. THEY WERE CLOSED THE REST OF THE SEASON AND IN 1961, OPENED WITH A NEW, WIDER SCREEN THAT COULD SHOW THE WIDER MOVIES. GEORGE ALSO WORKED WHILE IN HIGH SCHOOL DURING THE DAY, FOR MEL STILES AT STILES CLEANERS AND FOR PUNCH STOCKHAM CONTRACTOR. HIS DAD, CECIL WRAY, OWNED A RESTUARANT ON MAIN STREET (LATER TO BECOME THE GREEN MILL) AND THEN OWNED HIS COLONIAL RESTAURANT ON EAST PLATT STREET. WHEN HIS MOTHER DIED, THE
RESTAURANT WAS SOLD AND HIS DAD WORKED FOR SOMEONE OUTSIDE THE
FOOD BUSINESS. GEORGE WAS THEIR ONLY CHILD. GEORGE SAID THE DRIVE-IN HAD MANY BUSY NIGHTS, CHANGED THE DOUBLE FEATURES EVERY 2 OR 3 DAYS,
AND HAD A MID-WEEK BUCK NIGHT THAT WAS VERY POPULAR. AND HE RECALLS
LOTS OF KIDS TRYING TO SNEAK-IN THE THEATRE IN THE TRUNK OF THE CAR.
ADMISSION WAS LESS THAN A DOLLAR WHEN HE WORKED AT THE THEATRE.
EVERY NIGHT, GEORGE WOULD SAY: "BEFORE LEAVING, REPLACE THE SPEAKER
TO THE SPEAKER POST NEXT TO YOUR CAR". MANY PEOPLE OVER THE YEARS, DIDN'T DO THAT AND THE SPEAKER WIRE WAS PULLED LOOSE AND GEORGE HOOKED THE SPEAKER WIRE BACK UP AGAIN THE FOLLOWING SATURDAY. THE LATE
M.F. "BUD" McKINSEY WAS THE SECOND OWNER OF THE DRIVE-IN FROM 1964 TO
1971. IN THE SPRING OF 1972 WHEN HE TURNED OVER THE KEYS TO ME, WE
TOOK A TRIP TO DES MOINES TO INTRODUCE ME AT ALL THE FILM COMPANIES
ON "FILM ROW" AND I LEARNED HOW TO BOOK MOVIES FOR THE THEATRE.
DURING THE 8 HOUR ROUND TRIP, HE TOLD ME EVERYTHING ELSE I NEEDED
TO KNOW ABOUT RUNNING A THEATRE, AND I WAS ALL SET TO OPEN THE
SEASON IN LATE MARCH. BUT BEFORE THAT, WE SPENT A COUPLE WEEKS
DOING SOME PAINTING AND FIXING-UP THE DRIVE-IN. I HAD HELP FROM
ARNOLD AND HELEN MEYER, BOTH DECEASED, MY FATHER AND MOTHER IN-LAWS
WHO WORKED FOR ME OUT THERE FOR NEARLY 15 YEARS. IT WAS A GOOD JOB
FOR ARNOLD, WHO HAD M-S AND HAD TO QUIT HIS JOB. HE HAD BEEN A MECHANIC FOR THE SCHOOL AND CORNELIUS FARM STORE. I BOUGHT THE
61 KIDDIE TRAIN FROM A CEDAR RAPIDS MALL IN 1972 AND ARNOLD ALSO FIXED IT UP AND KEPT IT RUNNING. I ALSO BOUGHT THE PASTIME THEATRE IN 1972.
MY FIRST MANAGER WAS BOB KING. IN 1973, I OPENED THE VOY THEATRE
DOWNTOWN AFTER THE PASTIME WAS TORN DOWN TO MAKE ROOM FOR A NEW
VARIETY STORE. SMILES ON MAIN DENTAL BUILDING STANDS AT THAT SITE NOW.
WHEN BOB KING LEFT TO MOVE TO KANSAS CITY, I HIRED JACK JONES OF
MAQUOKETA IN 1974, FRESH OUT OF COLLEGE, AND HE HAS BEEN MY THEATRE
MANAGER FOR BOTH DOWNTOWN AND THE DRIVE-IN EVER SINCE. ONE MORE
THING......THE STEEL 1961 SECOND SCREEN WAS ALSO DOWNED BY A WIND STORM
IN 1995, SO THE CURRENT SCREEN IS THE THIRD OUT THERE. AND THE
SMALL CONCESSION STAND AND SMALL REST ROOMS WERE ENLARGED IN 2004,
WHEN WE STARTED GETTING BIGGER CROWDS BECAUSE WE WERE NOW THE
ONLY DRIVE-IN LEFT IN THE AREA. MOST OF OUR PATRONS ARE FROM
THE QUAD CITIES, HOME AT ONE TIME OF 5 DRIVE-INS. A LOT OF DRIVE-IN
FANS REMAIN DOWN THERE.
END OF THE DRIVE-IN STORY. IT HAS BEEN FUN. AND LOTS OF FUN YEARS
REMAIN.

THE THURSDAY DAILY REPORT IS BELOW!
