MAQUOKETA SCHOOL BOARD MEMBERS ARE MAKING PLANS TO ADD 6 CLASSROOMS AT THE HIGH SCHOOL AND SOME NEW RESTROOMS.

RANDY AND LINDA LAHEY, OWNERS OF THE HAYLOCK, O'HARA & LAHEY FUNERAL HOME IN MAQUOKETA SINCE 1988, ANNOUNCED TODAY THAT THEY HAVE PURCHASED THE HAYDEN FUNERAL HOMES IN WYOMING, OLIN, OXFORD JUNCTION AND LOST NATION.

THE ST. LOUIS CARDINALS ARE TIED FOR FIRST PLACE TODAY IN THEIR DIVISION. KMAQ AIRS THIER GAME AGAINST THE REDS AT 6:10 TONIGHT.

THE IOWA HAWKS OPEN THE FOOTBALL SEASON IN IOWA CITY TOMORROW MORNING AGAINST MIAMI OF OHIO. THE BROADCAST STARTS AT 9 TOMORROW MORNING ON KMAQ-FM. THE IOWA STATE CYCLONES OPEN THE SEASON TOMORROW NIGHT IN AMES, HOSTING UNI AND THE BROADCAST STARTS AT 4:15 TOMORROW AFTERNOON ON KMAQ-AM.

THE DEVELOPMENT COMPANY, MOCO REALTY, WHICH BROUGHT THE NEW DICK'S SUPERMARKET TO MAQUOKETA IS NOW LOOKING AT BUILDING A TRUCK PLAZA NEXT TO THE GENERAC PLANT ADJACENT TO HIGHWAY 61, JUST SOUTH OF MAQUOKETA. AT A MAQUOKETA CITY FINANCE COMMITTEE MEETING THIS WEEK, MOCO SAID IT IS PROPOSING TO DEVELOP A TRUCK PLAZA, WHICH MIGHT INCLUDE A SITDOWN RESTAURANT, THREE FAST FOOD RESTAURANTS, A CONVENIENCE STORE, A TRUCKER'S LOUNGE, A FUELING STATION AND A LOT FOR TRUCK PARKING, AND POSSIBLY A MOTEL. THE COMPLEX WOULD BE BUILDT ON ABOUJT 15 ACRES.

FIRE DESTROYED A BARN OWNED BY MIKE BENTON OF RURAL LOST NATION YESTERDAY AFTERNOON.

EARLIER THIS WEEK, DR. J. A. BROMAN OF MAQUOKETA, RETIRED, HAD TRIPLE BYPASS SURGERY AT DUBUQUE.

THE MAQUOKETA MEA HAS RE-SCHEDULED THEIR MEET THE SCHOOL BOARD CANDIDATES FORUM FOR 6 P.M. NEXT WEDNESDAY AT CITY HALL.

MARY HENRY IS THE NEW INTERIM MANAGER OF THE MAQUOKETA COUNTRY CLUB, REPLACING JUDY NEIS. SHE HAS BEEN AN EMPLOYEE OF THE CLUB FOR ABOUT 3 YEARS AND FOR MANY YEARS, WAS MANAGER OF THE FLAP JACK FAMILY RESTAURANT IN MAQUOKETA.
COUNTRY CLUB BOARD PRESIDENT DR. CLIFF RASK, SAID HENRY WILL SERVE AS INTERIM MANAGER UNTIL THE END OF THE YEAR. HENRY SAYS SHE MAY BE INTERESTED IN THE POSITION ON A PERMANENT BASIS.

BREAK-IN MONDAY NIGHT AT AWESOME CAR WASH OUT BY WAL-MART....$100 TAKEN IN CASH.

RANDALL LESS OF HOPKINGTON WAS CHARGED WITH THEFT IN THE 2ND DEGREE. HE PURCHASED OVER $5000 WORTH EQUIPMENT AT THE CLINTON ENGINES AUCTION IN DECEMBER AND LOADED UP THE EQUIPMENT AND LEFT WITHOUT PAYING FOR IT.

PAUL AND LINDA DOTTERWICH HAD A BOY YESTERDAY. GRANDPARENTS ARE JERRY AND COLLEEN DOTTERWICK OF OTTER CREEK.

MONDAY WAS HOT...TODAY IT IS HOT....6/100 OF AN INCH OF RAIN AROUND MIDNIGHT LAST NIGHT AND A LITTLE SHOWER AROUND 8 THIS MORNING.
TOMORROW AND THURSDAY WILL STILL BE HOT, BUT LOOKS LIKE THE WEEKEND, FRIDAY THRU MONDAY, LABOR DAY, WILL BE MUCH COOLER.
THERE WAS LOTS OF WIND DAMAGE LAST NIGHT IN CEDAR RAPIDS. ALL SCHOOLS ARE AGAIN HAVING EARLY OUT TODAY.

TODAY IS KMAQ'S 45TH BIRTHDAY. KMAQ....AM 1320 ONLY AT THAT TIME....WENT ON THE AIR FOR THE FIRST FULL DAY OF BROADCASTING ON AUGUST 26, 1958. IT WAS A DAYTIME ONLY STATION THEN AND WAS LOCATED UPSTAIRS AT 136 1/2 SOUTH MAIN STREET, ABOVE WHERE THE MAQUOKETA CAFE IS NOW LOCATED. IT HAD A LONG, LONG STAIRWAY TO THE TOP. KMAQ-FM STARTED IN 1967. IN 1970, KMAQ WAS FORCED TO MOVE BECAUSE OF A NEARBY FIRE AND RE-LOCATED TO OUR PRESENT LOCATION, 129 N. MAIN STREET. THE STATION WAS ORIGINALLY OWNED BY 3 MEN FROM WISCONSIN. ONE, NATE GOETZ, IS RETIRED AND RESIDES IN FLORIDA. I BOUGHT THE STATION FROM THE THREE, OCTOBER 1, 1965. THE FIRST MANAGER, BOB BROWN, IS ALSO RETIRED AND LIVES IN FORT ATKINSON, WISCONSIN. THE FIRST NEWS DIRECTOR WAS STAN BARTON AND I DON'T KNOW WHERE HE LIVES NOW. THE FIRST ENGINEER WAS A MAQUOEKTA (FULTON) NATIVE, BROTHER OF RED HENTON, AND HE WAS ALSO THE MORNING ANNOUNCER. HIS NAME WAS RAY SHEIELDS AND HE DIED MANY YEARS AGO, BUT HIS WIFE AND SON STILL LIVE IN ARKANSAS. NOTHING SPECIAL FOR THS ANNIVERSARY, OTHER THAN AN ADVERTISING BUMPER STICKER SALES PROMOTION. IF I'M STILL AROUND IN 5 YEARS, KMAQ WILL HAVE A BIG PARTY (50TH) FOR BOTH ADVERTISERS AND LISTENERS.

ROBERT ''Bob" ARNESON, AGE 73, OF NEVADA AND FORMERLY OF MAQUOKETA, DIED LAST THURSDAY AT A HOSPICE HOUSE IN AMES, FOLLOWING A SHORT BATTLE WITH ACUTE LUKEMIA. HE WORKED FOR NORTHWESTERN BELL TELEPHONE IN MAQUOKETA FOR MANY YEARS. IN THE EARLY DAYS OF KMAQ, WHENEVER WE HAD A PROBLEM, BOB, OR I.S. CASIDY WERE JUST A PHONE CALL AWAY. HE IS SURVIVED BY HIS WIFE, BOBBIE.... A DAUGHTER,
REBECCA SPAETE OF NEVADA....AND TWO SONS, BRUCE OF MESA AND BILL OF OMAHA, PLUS SIX GRANDCHILDREN AND FOUR GREAT GRANDCHILDREN.

THE CITY OF MAQUOKETA HAS JOINED WITH A DUBUQUE ORGANIZATION TO FORM A COALAITION FOR ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT. THE STATE OF IOWA HAS ENCOURAGED COMMUNITIES TO FORM REGIONAL ALLIANCES. DELAWARE COUNTY MAY ALSO JOIN IN WITH JACKSON AND DUBUQUE.
COUNCILMAN STEVE FLYNN SAID THE STATE OF IOWA IS MOVING TOWARD A REGIONALIZED CONCEPT FOR ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT.

MAQUOKETA POLICE INVESTIGATED TWO ACCIDENTS MONDAY, NEITHER RESULTED IN INJURIES. DENNIS DODDS, AGE 52 OF MAQUOKETA AND REX FELTEN, AGE 71, OF MAQUOKETA, WERE IN ONE .....AND LESLIE SPALDING, AGE 17, OF MAQUOKETA AND JENNIFER HANSEN, AGE 26, OF MAQUOKETKA, WERE IN THE OTHER.

USUAL SMALL, BUT FAITHFUL, GROUP TO ENJOY THE HARNESS RACES SUNDAY AFTERNOON IN MAQUOKETA. I WATCHED ABOUT HALF AND THEN HAD ANOTHER COMMITTMENT. SAT WITH PAUL AND GERI HAYES, OF MAQUOKETA. THEY HAVE ATTENDED MANY RACES OVER THE YEARS. MANY WON BY H.L. BOWMAN, JUNIOR AND CHUCK WENDEL. PAUL AND GERI WILL BE CELEBRATING THEIR 57TH WEDDING ANNIVERSAY, SEPTEMBER 1ST.

THE PIZZA HUT IN MAQUOKETA WAS CLOSED YESTERDAY, AND AGAIN TODAY, FOR REMODELING.

DID NOT HAVE TIME TO DO A REPORT YESTERDAY, BUT HAD I, IT WOULD HAVE BEEN ABOUT THE STORM WEDNESDAY NIGHT. STRONG WINDS UP TO 60 MPH CAUSED SOME TREES TO BE BLOWN DOWN AND THOUSANDS OF BRANCHES BLOWN TO THE GROUND. CITY CREWS WILL PICK UP THE TREE LIMBS AND BRUSH ALL NEXT WEEK, STARTING AT 7 MONDAY MORNING, THE SECOND TIME THIS SUMMER THEY HAVE HAD TO DO A SPEICIAL PICKUP. ALONG WITH THE WIND WEDNESDAY NIGHT, A LITTLE HAIL...AND ABOUT AN INCH OF RAIN. WE NEEDED THE RAIN.

THE MAQUOKETA CITY COUNCIL AT A SPECIAL MEETING LAST NIGHT, VOTED TO GIVE THE JACKSON COUNTY HISTORICAL SOCIETY THE OLD CLINTON ENGINES ADMINISTRATION BUILDING. AND PROBABLY ALSO, 4 ADDITIONAL ADJOINING ACRES OF LAND. THERE ARE STIPULATIONS. FOR STARTERS, THE SOCIETY WILL BE REQUIRED TO COMPLETE SOME RENOVATIONS OF THE BUILDING.....NEW ROOF, WINDOWS AND TUCKPOINTING.....WITHIN THE NEXT 12 MONTHS. THE SOCIETY HAS MONEY TO DO THIS. IN LATER YEARS, IT IS THE INTENT OF THE SOCIETY TO MOVE ITS ENTIRE COLLECTION OF ARTIFACTS TO A NEW BUILDING BEHIND THE
OLD CLINTON OFFICE BUILDING. LOTS OF WORK AHEAD FOR THE HISTORICAL SOCIETY, INCLUDING RAISING A LOT OF MONEY FOR THE PROJECT.

HELEN EATON, AGE 84, DIED TUESDAY AT UNIVERSITY HOSPITALS IN IOWA CITY. SHE WORKED AT HAMILTON'S DEPARTMENT STORE FOR OVER 18 YEARS. SURVIVORS INCLUDE...DAUGHTER JENCANE OF PARK RIDGE, ILLINOIS....AND SONS RICHARD EATON OF THORNTON, COLORADO....ROBERT EATON OF MAQUOKETA AND DUANE EATON OF DUBUQUE.

A MAQUOKETA INDUSTRY, ALLIANCE PIPELINE, HAS DONATED $20,000 TO THE NEW OHNWARD FINE ARTS CENTER AUDITORIUM ON EAST PLATT IN MAQUOKETA. THE 650 SEAT THEATRE WILL OPEN LATE NEXT YEAR.
THE MONEY FROM ALLIANCE WILL GO IN THE CENTER'S ENDOWMENT FUND. THIS SPECIAL FUND WAS SET UP TO PAY FOR FUTURE UPKEEP OF THE AUDITORIUM, SO IT WILL NOT BE A BURDEN TO TAXPAYERS YEARS FROM NOW.
THIS ENDOWMENT, LIKE MOST, WILL CONSIST OF DONATED MONEY, INVESTED, AND THE INTEREST ONLY USED FOR EXPENSES. GARY DREW, WHO IS SPEARHEADING THE FINE ARTS CENTER POJECT, AND HAS ALSO CONTRIBUTED
THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS PERSONALLY, SAID THAT THE ENDOWMENT FUND IS NOW AT $36,000.

THE MAQUOKETA ATHLETIC BOOSTER CLUB TOLD SCHOOL BOARD MEMBERS MONDAY NIGHT THAT THE CLUB WILL PAY FOR A NEW INFIELD FOR BOTH THE BASEBALL AND SOFTBALL FIELDS UP BY THE HIGH SCHOOL. BOOSTER CLUB PRESIDENT DEAN SCHAUF SAID THE EXTIMATED COST OF THE PROJECT WILL BE $50,000 AND THAT THE PROJECT WON'T DEPLETE THE COFFERS OF THE VOLUNTEER ORGANIZATION. ATHLETIC DIRECTOR CURT NELSON SAID THE TWO CURRENT FIELDS ARE OVER 25 YEARS OLD AND ARE LIMESTONE FIELDS. A MINNESOTA FIRM WILL BE THE SOURCE FOR THE REDBALL DIAMOND AGGREGATE FOR THE FIELDS AT A COST OF ABOUT $47,000, WHICH INCLUDES TRUCKING IN TO MAQUOKETA. VOLUNTEERS WILL BE HELPING GET RID OF THE EXIXTING LIMESTONE AND CUTTING THE SOD. WORK ON THE PROJECT WILL START SOON AND SHOULD BE COMPLETED BY THE END OF THE YEAR.

90 TODAY AGAIN. TWENTY DAYS WITH NO RAIN. NOT GOOD FOR THE CROPS AND LAWNS. THERE IS A CHANCE FOR SOME RAIN TOMORROW AND TOMORROW NIGHT.

THE JACKSON COUNTY SUPERVIORS PAY THE HUMAINE SOCIETY $65 PER ANIMAL DROPPED OFF AT THE SOCIETY, THAT WAS FOUND HOMELESS HERE IN THE COUNTY. RECENTLY, THEY RECEIVED A BILL FOR A MOTHER AND 5 KITTENS AND ARE NOT SURE THEY WILL PAY THE $390 BILL. THE MANAGER OF THE SHELTER, NICK MEYER, AND A COUPLE BOARD MEMBERS OF THE SOCIETY, WERE AT THE SUPERVISORS MEETING THIS MORNING, PLEADING THEIR CASE.
NO FINAL DECISION WAS MADE, BUT THE SUPERVORS CLAIM IN THE PAST, THEY HAVE PAID FOR THE MOTHER CAT ONLY, NOT KITTENS. THE SOCIETY IS SHORT OF MONEY.

THE ONE-FOOT SHORT WALL AT CARDINAL SCHOOL WILL PROBABLY END UP COSTING THE CONTRACTOR, CRESSEY AND ASSOCIATES, AROUND $13.500.

DOUGLAS BEAN, AGE 50, OF MAQUOKETA, RECEIVED BURNS AFTER HIS DUMP TRUCK'S BRAKES FAILED AND OVERTURNED YESTERDAY AFTERNOO NEAR HIGHWAYS 61 AND 64. HE WAS TAKEN BY AMBULANCE TO THE LOCAL HOSPITAL FOR TREATMENT. THE TRUCK CAUGHT FIRE AND IT WAS PUT OUT BY THE MAQUOKETA FIRE DEPARTMENT.

AN ADDITION TO THE CARDINAL ELEMENTARY SCHOOL IS UP, BUT A FOOT SHORT AND ITS IS CAUSING A STIR. THE BOARD WILL MEET TONIGHT TO DISCUSS IT. JOHN CRESSEY CONSTRUCTION IS THE CONTRACTOR.

THE FIRST DAY TO FILE PAPERS FOR THIS FALL'S CITY ELECTION IS AUGUST 25TH. UP FOR ELECTION THIS YEAR, THE MAYOR AND 5 COUNCIL SEATS.

CITY COUNCIL MEETING TONIGHT AT 7 AND REGULAR SCHOOL BAORD MEETING AT 7, AFTER EARLIER BUILDINGS TOUR.

ALVERNA GREEN , AGE 91, OF GALENA DIED SATURDAY AND A LOCAL SURVIVOR IS A DAUGHTER, LOIS DONATSCH OF MAQUOKETA.

DOUG OWEN, MANAGER OF THE MAQUOKETA MUNICIPAL ELECTRIC UTILITY TOLD HIS BOARD THIS WEEK THAT HE IS STILL LOOKING FOR A DISTRIBUTION SUPERINTENDENT. APPLICATION DEADLINE IS AUGUST 23. BENNIE SWANSON, AGE 93, DIED YESTERDAY AT WESTWING PLACE IN DEWITT. HE WAS A LONGTIME AND WELL KNOWN CATTLE FEEDER.

BEAUTIFUL DAY TODAY, WEDNESDAY, WITH A HIGH OF 86. WE NEED RAIN, BUT NONE IS IN THE FORECAST FOR THE REST OF THE WEEK.

TOOK A NEARLY FULL BUS TO THE STATE FAIR YESTERDAY AND HAD GREAT WEATHER FOR THE TRIP. THE ATTENDANCE WAS EXCELLENT. LAST YEAR, THE MILLION ATTENDANCE MARK WAS REACHED FOR FIRST TIME AND GOOD CHANCE IT WILL BE MORE THIS YEAR. THE FAIR ENDS THIS SUNDAY. ALAN JACKSON ENTERTAINS FRIDAY NIGHT.

THE JACKSON COUNTY SUPERVISORS MET YETERDAY AND ASKED ALL DEPARTMENT HEADS TO CUT THEIR CURRENT BUDGET BY 5-PERCENT. THE ACTION COMES AS A RESULT OF THE STATE CUTTING THE COUNTY'S BUDGET BY ABOUT $115,000. THE DEPARTMENT HEADS WERE ASKED TO RETURN THEIR PROPOSED REDUCTIONS BY MONDAY WITH SUPERVISORS RENIEWING THEM NEXT TUESDAY.

THE BELLEVUE COMET GIRLS SOFTBALL TEAM WON THEIR FIRST GAME AT THE STATE TOURNAMENT IN FORT DODGE MONDAY NIGHT, SCORING ALL 3 OF THEIR RUNS IN THE 6TH INNING, AND WON 3 TO 1. THEY ARE PLAYING THEIR SECOND GAME RIGHT NOW AND I WILL HAVE THE OUTCOME OF IT ON TOMORROW'S REPORT.

GOOD ECONOMIC NEWS FOR MAQUOKETA TODAY. PACIFIC COAST FEATHER HAS BEEN HAS BEEN HIRING EMPLOYEES AND WILL HIRE 30 MORE AS BUSINESS INCREASES. MANAGER STEVE SCHMUDE SAID ONE OF THEIR MAJOR COMPETITORS HAS GONE OUT OF BUSINESS AND PACIFIC COAST FEATHER IS EXPECTING TO PICK UP A GOOD PORTION OF THAT BUSINESS. SCHMUDE SAID THAT ADDITIONAL MACHINES HAVE BEEN BROUGHT IN AND THAT HE IS ADDING PRODUCTION LINES TO BOTH THE PILLOW AND COMFORTER DIVISIONS IN MAQUOKETA.

SOME AREA JUDGES HAVE APPLIED FOR THE VACANCY ON THE IOWA SUPREME COURT. AMONG THOSE APPLYING FOR THE JOB, MCHS GRAD BOBBY ALPERS. THE FIELD WILL BE NARROWED TO THREE AND THE GOVERNOR WILL CHOOSE FROM THOSE THREE. HER DAD, HAROLD, WAS THE LONGTIME MANAGER OF THE FAREWAY STORE IN MAQUOKETA AND NOW LIVES WITH HIS WIFE IN THE QUAD CITIES.
