NOW 21

WHEN I CAME TOWN, PLANS WERE UNDERWAY FOR TWO NEW BOWLING ALLEYS
AND BOTH OPENED THE NEXT YEAR, IN 1959.    AND THAT YEAR, THE SIX-LANES
DOWNTOWN CLOSED.    ONE OF  THE NEW...THE HI HO LANES IS WHERE DUTRAC
IS  NOW AND THE OTHER TOWN AND COUNTRY LANES IS WHERE THEISEN'S IS NOW.
WAL MART TOOK TOWN & COUNTRY LANES LOCATION AND TIMBER LANES BECAME THE NEW BOWLING PLACE IN 1990.    MAQUOKETA HAS BEEN A GOOD
BOWLING TOWN FOR A LONG TIME.
NOTE:  I ONCE BOWLED IN TWO LEAGUES, ONE AT  HI HO AND OTHER AT T & C
AND BELIEVE IT OR NOT...I ONCE BOWLED A 256.    BACK IN THOSE DAYS, 300 GAMES AND 700 SERIES WERE RARE ACCOMPLISHMENTS IN MAQUOKETA.    RON YEAGER
BECAME ONE OF THE FIRST TOP BOWLERS IN MAQUOKETA.   AND YES, RED HENTON
WAS A GOOD BOWLER.    LOUIE CLASEN WAS A TOP BOWLER ALSO, BUT HE'S GETTING OLD.

THIS BUILDING'S HISTORY.    WHEN I CAME IN 1958 IT WAS A PAINT STORE.
PHOTO IS AFTER MY LATE DAUGHTER CHRISTY CLASEN OPENED "KIDS COME FIRST" IN THE 70'S AND RAN IT FOR A COUPLE YEARS.   IN PHOTO,  GRANDKIDS SARA CLASEN NOW OF BETTENDORF AND NATE CLASEN NOW OF CEDAR RAPIDS.
UPSTAIRS WAS THE ORIGINAL LOCATION OF KMAQ, FROM 1958 TO 1970.    FOR THE LAST 20 YEARS, THE BUILDING HAS BEEN THE MAQUOKETA CAFE.   IT WILL CLOSE SOON AND IT'S OWNER WILL REPLACE IT SOON WITH A NEW BEAUTIFUL (I'VE SEEN PHOTOS) RESTAURANT NEAR CORNER OF 61 AND 64, WHERE NOBY'S THEN FLAPJACK RESTAURANT  WERE LOCATED.    IT WAS BUILDT BY THE LATE NOBY GRUNBERG IN 1973.    HIS DAD WAS A MAQUOKETA DOCTOR AND NOBY
EVENTUALLY MOVED TO MARSHALLTOWN WHERE HE WAS IN THE FOOD BUSINESS
UNTIL HE DIED.
