MONDAY DAILY REPORT

WET, CLOUDY DAY,  HIGH OF 35.
WEEK AHEAD SHOULD BE OKAY FOR THIS TIME OF THE YEAR WITH
TEMP WARMING UP DAILY.

THE DEMOCRATS WERE IN MAQUOKETA SATURDAY.     SANDERS
DREW A HUGH CROWD AT THE HOTEL SOUTH OF TOWN AND O'MALLY
APPEARED AT BRICK TAP IN DOWNTOWN MAQUOKETA.

THE FIRE DEPARTMENT HELD THEIR ANNUAL DINNER AND AWARDS NIGHT
AT THE MAQUOKETA COUNTRY CLUB.    AFTER THE CATERED DINNER,
FIRE CHEIF MARK BECK WAS EMCEE FOR THE PROGRAM.
THAT'S MARK ABOVE, AND BELOW, TOM MESSERLI WAS HONORED FOR
33 YEARS ON THE DEPARMENT.   HE RETIRED LAST YEAR AND THE
DEPARTMENT GAVE HIM A SPEICIAL FIRE HELMET GIFT THAT WAS PLACED
ON TOM'S HEAD BY HIS OTHER HALF, SHERI MELVOLD, WHILE HE RECEIVED
A STANDING OVATION.

IN ABOVE PHOTO BY SHERI MELVOLD, IN BLUE, BJORN BECK (SON OF THE CHIEF) HOLDS THE MEMORIAL AWARD PLAQUE HE RECEIVED FOR HIS SERVICE AS DEPARTMENT SECRETARY, A POSITION HE HAS  HELD FOR 6 YEARS AND STILL HOLDS AND AT RIGHT, BRIAN HAFFNER, HOLDING HIS 10 YEARS OF SERVICE PLAQUE.    
CHIEF BECK SAID THE DEPARTMENT RECEIVED 59  CALLS LAST YEAR,
DOWN FROM 76 THE YEAR BEFORE.     ALSO THEY ANSWERED TO 3 MUTUAL
AID CALLS.   AN AVERAGE OF 14 RESPONDED TO CALLS AND FIREMAN MARTY
BALLIU MADE 53 OF THE 59 FIRES.     THE FIREMEN ALSO PUT IN OVER 18-HUNDRED TRAINING HOURS ON THURSDAY NIGHTS, CONDUCTED BY
TRAINING OFFICER JAMES CONNOLLY.   THE  NEW FIRE PREVENTION OFFICER IS GREG BOPES.   BECK SAID THE DEPARTMENT WILL SPONSOR THEIR SECOND ANNUAL "FIREBALL" CONCERT IN THE GREEN SPACE DOWNTOWN THIS SUMMER AND IN JUNE, THEY WILL HAVE THEIR BIG ANNUAL FIREMEN'S BREAKFAST AT THE FIRE STATION. 

IN SPORTS, FRIDAY NIGHT THE  CARDINAL BOYS BASKETBALL TEAM
DEFEATED DYERSVILLE 75 TO  59 TO END THEIR 5-GAME LOOSING STREAK.
THEIR RECORD IS  NOW 8 AND 6.    THE CARDINAL GIRLS LOST TO
DYERSVILLE BY ONE POINT, 35 TO 34.
AND IN THE WYOMING IOWA WRESTLING TOURNAMENT SATURDAY,
THE CARDINALS PLACED 3RD IN THE 11 TEAMS MEET.
