BROWN BAG LUNCH PROGRAM BY LOWELL CARLSON ABOUT THE
THE FAMOUS MAQUOKETA PAINTER (CARSON) AND TOOK THIS PHOTO OF
A CLINTON ENGINES MOTORBIKE.
AND THEY ALSO MANUFACTURED AN ALL TERRAIN BIKE, ABOVE.
NOTE, IT IS ON A TRACK. WONDER IF IT WORKED?
HOPEFULLY BILL LUCKEY WILL FILL US IN.
I VISITED THE MODERN MEN'S ROOM AND THE ABOVE WAS ON THE WALL.
NOTE, UPPER LEFT HAND CORNER, LARRY HAGER PAINTING NAME ON
CLINTON ENGINES VEHICLE. LARRY, NOW 90+ LIVES IN MARSHALLTOWN.
IT IS SUPER BOWL TIME.
CLINTON ENGINES WAS A FOOTBALL SPONSOR BACK IN THE EARLY TV DAYS.
IN 1958, IT SPONSORED THE ENTIRE 2ND QUARTER OF A PLAYOFF-GAME.
GOOGLE CLINTON ENGINES NETWORK TV FOOTBALL COMMERCIAL AND YOU CAN SEE AND HEAR THE COMMERCIAL. SOME SAY CLINTON ENGINES
WAS A SPONSOR OF THE FIRST SUPER BOWL GAME. I'M NOT SURE THAT
IS RIGHT? ANYONE KNOW? I HAVE ALSO HEARD THAT OWNER DON THOMAS DID THE COMMERCIAL AND IT COST THE COMPANY $250,000.

4 BELOW EARLY THIS MORNING....9 FOR A HIGH TODAY.
TONIGHT, 6 AND TOMORROW A CHANCE OF SNOW AND 24 FOR A HIGH.
AT CITY COUNCIL MEETING LAST NIGHT, THE COUNCIL RENEWED A SIDEWALK OBSTRUCTION PERMIT FOR "SWEET THINGS BAKERY".
COUNCILMAN JOSH COLLISTER, WHO OWNS THE BAKERY, APPLIED FOR THE PERMIT TO AGAIN PUT A GRILL ON THE SIDEWALK FRIDAYS THIS SUMMER. PERMITS ARE REQUIRED FOR ANY BUSINESS THAT WANTS TO PUT ANYTHING ON THE CITY SIDEWALKS. MAYOR DON SCHWENKER SAID THEY RECEIVED A LETTER FROM STEVE AND ROXANNE McAFEE OPPOSING THE RENEWAL. THEY OWN THE NEXT DOOR TO THE BAKERY "ODDFELLOWS EMPORIUM" AND THEIR COMPLAINT WAS THAT THE SMOKE SMELL FROM
THE GRILL PERMEATES THEIR BUILDING. THE CITY ALSO RECEIVED PETITIONS SUPPORTING THE APPLICATION AND COLLISTER SAID 90% OF THE BUSINESSES ON MAIN STREET SIGNED PETITIONS IN FAVOR OF THE
GRILLING. COLLISTER SAID HE PLANS TO GRILL BRATS AND BURGERS IN FRONT OF THE BAKERY AND PLANS TO BUY AN OPEN GRILL WHICH WILL NOT CAUSE AS MUCH SMOKE AS THE HOUSEHOLD GRILL WITH A LID.
COUNCIL MEMBERS APPROVED THE APPLICATION WITH COLLISTER VOTING
ABSTAIN. THE MAYOR ASKED COLLISTER TO TRY TO KEEP THE SMOKE AWAY FROM THE McAFEE'S BUSINESS. COLLISTER SAID HE MOVED THE GRILL TO THE OPPOSITE SIDE OF THE SIDEWALK WHEN McAFEES COMPLAINED TO HIM LAST YEAR.
SPORTS: BOTH THE MAQUOKETA GIRLS AND BOYS TEAMS LOST TO
DUBUQUE WAHLERT LAST NIGHT. UP THERE, THE BOYS SCORE,
61 TO 52 AND HERE, THE GIRL'S SCORE, 58 TO 30.
TONIGHT, DYERSVILLE BECKMAN. AGAIN, GIRLS HERE AND BOYS UP THERE.

ONE EVENING LATE LAST SUMMER, I GOT A CALL TO COME OUT TO MY 61 DRIVE-IN THEATRE TO MEET SOME CANADIAN PHOTOGRAPHERS WHO WERE
ON A ONE-WEEK TOUR OF THIS AREA, TAKING PHOTOS FOR THEIR 2013
PRINTED CALENDAR.
WHEN NANCY AND I ARRIVED, THEY WERE ALREADY TAKING PHOTOS AND IT WAS QUITE APPARENT, THEY WERE PROFESSIONALS. THEY TOOK HUNDREDS OF PHOTOS AND AS IT TURNED OUT, USED FOUR ON THEIR WEB SITE AND ONE FOR "OCTOBER" ON THEIR CALENDAR.
NANCY AND I ENJOYED THE VISIT WITH THE THREE. READING THEIR WEB SITE STORY, (THEY ASSUMED WE WERE MARRIED) YOU CAN TELL THEY
HAD A GOOD TIME VISITING THE DRIVE-IN. THEY SENT ME A COUPLE OF
THE CALENDARS THEY DISTRIBUTE TO THEIR CLIENTS. ALONG CAME A THANK-YOU NOTE SAYING THANKS FOR THE "SLUSHIES" AND SAYING THEY
WILL REMEMBER THE FIREFLIES.

THE DAY STARTED AT 5 ABOVE.
WE HAD LOTS OF SUNSHINE AND GOT UP TO 21 TODAY.
THE REST OF THE WEEK WILL BE A LITTLE WARMER.
THE CITY COUNCIL MEETS TONIGHT TO DISCUSS THE DECKER HOTEL.
THE CITY HAS VOTED TO BUY IT TO KEEP IT FROM BEING AN APARTMENT
BUILDING AND WILL RE-SELL IT TO A PERSON THAT WOULD KEEP IT
AS A HOTEL AND RESTAURANT. I HEARD TODAY THAT THERE IS AN
INTERESTED BUY IN DUBUQUE AND MINNESOTA. IT IS "BARGAIN" PRICED. IT HAS REMAINED OPEN. IT IS OF COURSE OUR NEIGHBOR ACROSS THE
STREET AND SO WE HOPE IT WILL CONTINUE AS A HOTEL-RESTAURANT.
JACKSON COUNTY ATTORNEY SARA DAVENPORT IS AGAIN LOOKING FOR A NEW ASSISTANT. MATTHEW SPEERS HAS RESIGNED AFTER TWO MONTHS
ON THE JOB. HE HAS TAKEN THE ASSISTANT COUNTY ATTORNEY POSITION
IN BUENA VISTA WHICH IS HIS "HOME" COUNTY. SARA DAVENPORT IS
SEEKING APPLICANTS AND HOPES TO HAVE SOMEONE HIRED BEFORE SPEERS LEAVES JANUARY 25TH.
DALE PETERS, AGE 76, OF MAQUOKETA AND FORMERLY OF GRAND MOUND DIED TUESDAY. SURVIVORS INCLUDE HIS WIFE AND A DAUGHTER,
JILL FRANZEN OF MAQUOKETA.
MARY MOREHEAD, 61, OF CALAMUS DIED MONDAY. SURVIVORS INCLUDE
HER HUSBAND AND A SISTER, BONNIE GRAU OF MAQUOKETA.
SCHULTZ FUNERAL HOME IN DEWITT IS IN CHARGE OF ARRANGEMENTS FOR
BOTH PETERS AND MOREHEAD.
MAQUOKETA HAS A NEW BAND, THAT PLAYS ROCK MUSIC OF THE 50' AND 60'S AND BLUE GRASS MUSIC TOO. "THE IGNIGHTERS"....DAVE KLOFT,
SHAWN HENTLEMAN AND RANDY McCUTCHEON. THEY WILL PLAY THIS SATURDAY NIGHT AT TIMBER LANES.
GARY EGGERS, THE DIRECTOR OF THE MAQUOKETA COMMUNITY CUPBOARD, HAS PRESENTED A CHALLENGE TO THE CHURCHES OF THE MAQUOKETA AREA. GARY HAS CHALLENGED CHURCH MEMBERS TO COLLECT 12,400 CANS OF FOOD BEFORE FEBRUARY 3RD...SUPER BOWL SUNDAY.
EACH MONTH THE COMMUNITY CUPBOARD DISTRIBUTES MORE THAN THIS
NUMBER OF FOOD ITEMS. IF TOGETHER, THE CHURCHES COLLECT 12,400 CANS OF FOOD, GARY WILL HAVE HIS HEAD SHAVED! THE KICKOFF
