THE JACKSON COUNTY ALZHEMER'S WALK IS TOMORROW AT BELLEVUE AND ONE OF THE SPONSORS IS KMAQ. KMAQ NEWS DIRECTOR SHERI MELVOLD AND SALES REP ROXANNE CLAUSING WILL BOTH WALK IN IT.

DAWN AND RICK TILL OF CASSELBERRY, FLORIDA, ARE PARENTS OF A GIRL BORN YESTERDAY. PATERNAL GRANDMOTHER IS GWENDOLA TILL OF RURAL MAQUOKETA.

THE MAQUOKETA HIGH SCHOOL CLASS OF '56 IS HAVING THEIR 50TH REUNION TOMORROW NIGHT AT THE EAGLES CLUB IN MAQUOKETA.
SOME OF THE CLASS MEMBERS ATTENDED DINNER LAST NIGHT AT THE DECKER HOTEL, WITH SOME SPECIAL GUESTS, INCLUDING DR. BROMAN
AND THEIR HEAD BASKETBALL COACH, JERRY CARPENTER, AND MUSIC TEACHER JANICE FARNUM. JERRY CARPENTER, WHO REGULARLY READS THIS REPORT, STOPPED IN THIS MORNING AND WE HAD A GOOD TALK ABOUT THE 50'S IN MAQUOKETA.
HIS FIRST CHILD WAS DELIVERED BY DR. BROMAN. HE NOW LIVES IN
ROMANO, CALIFORNIA, IN THE MOUNTAINS. HIS FIRST TEACHING JOB WAS HERE IN MAQUOKETA IN 1951 AND HE STAYED HERE FOR 5 YEARS, AS HISTORY TEACHER AND COACH. FOR 5 SUMMERS, HE ALSO RAN THE MAQUOKETA SWIMMING POOL AND LOLA LUBBEN AND KAREN SPECHT
WORKED AT THE POOL FOR HIM. KAREN, BY THE WAY, IS THE CHAIRMAN OF TOMORROW'S REUNION. SOME OTHER THAT WERE IN THAT CLASS:
ROD CARSON OF CARSON & SON FUNERAL HOME IN MAQUOKETA. DICK CLARK, NOW OF CEDAR FALLS, WHO WENT ON THE PLAY FOOTBALL FOR IOWA AND WENT TO THE ROSE BOWL WITH THE HAWKEYES. THEN WENT INTO EDUCATION AND EVENTUALLY WAS A PRINCIPAL AT A COUPLE SCHOOLS. BLAINE KEENEY WAS IN THE CLASS. ALSO HOWARD HEINZEL WHO ENDED UP MARRYING CLASSMASTE KATHLEEN SIKKINK, DAUGHTER OF THE SUPERINTENDENT, MELVIN SIKKINK. THEY NOW LIVE IN DES MOINES. JERRY FULLER ASSISTED IN COACHING TRACK, AND FOOTBALL AND THE LAST TWO YEARS HE WAS IN MAQUOKETA, HE WAS THE HEAD BASKETBALL COACH. TO SUM IT UP, HE HAS FOND MEMORIES OF MAQUOKETA AND ENJOYS VISITS HERE. HE AND HIS WIFE ARE ENJOYING THIS ONE TOO. PRETTY SURE HE SAID HE HAS 3 CHILDREN AND ALL LIVE IN THE MIDWEST.

JERRY CARPENTER ALSO TOLD ME THAT AT BEVERLY HILLS HIGH SCHOOL WHERE HE TAUGHT FOR 25 YEARS, HE HAD STUDENTS WHO WENT ON TO BE FAMOUS MOVIE STARS, INCLUDING RICHARD DREYFUS AND NICHOLAS CAGE.

AND...WHEN IN MAQUOKET, CARPENTER WAS A MEMBER OF THE MAQUOKETA LIONS CLUB. IN IN 1953 (NOT SURE THAT WAS THE EXACT YEAR) HE AND 3 OTHER MEMBERS OF CLUB HAD A BARBERSHOP QUARTET AND THEY (UNDER DIRECTION OF JANICE FARNUM) ENTERED THE
LION'S BARBERSHOP CONTEST AT THE LIONS INTERNATIONAL CONVENTION THAT YEAR IN CHICAGO. AND, THEY TOOK 2ND PLACE.
BUT, TAKING FIRST PLACE WAS "THE BUFFALO BILLS", THAT LATER WENT ON TO BE FAMOUS WORLD-WIDE, AND ONE OF THE BEST-EVER BARBERSHOP QUARTETS IN THE WORLD. IN ADDITION TO JERRY, VIC STEAD(NOW DECEASED) WAS ONE OF THE FOUR. BUT HE (AND JANICE EITHER) CAN RECALL WHO THE OTHER TWO WERE. ANYONE OUT THERE KNOW?

MAQUOKETA AT ANAMOSA TONIGHT. GAME AT 7:30 ON KMAQ. I AND LEIGHTON WILL BE THERE TO BROADCAST ON AM AND FM. MAQUOKETA GOES IN WITH AN 0 AND 3 RECORD. LAST YEAR, IT WAS THE SAME 0 AND 3 AND MAQUOKETA HERE IN TOWN, BEAT THEM 36 TO 0. WILL HISTORY REPEAT ITSELF? HOPE SO. GO CARDINALS.

HAVE A GOOD WEEKEND.

DENNIS VOY
