WE HAVE HAD AN INCH OF RAIN SINCE YESTERDAY AND OUR TOTAL FOR THE MONTH, ALMOST 5 INCHES. PRETTY GOOD. WE NEEDED IT.
THE MAQUOKETA SCHOOL BOARD DECIDED THIS WEEK THE SHUT OFF POP AND SNACK MACHINES DURING THE SCHOOL DAY. IT RESPONDS TO A FEDERAL MANDATE ISSUED, SAYING ALL SCHOOLS NEED TO INSTITUTE
A WELLNESS POLICY, THAT INCLUDES A DISCUSSION ON FOOD SERVED AT THE SCHOOL AS WELL AS PHYSICAL ACTIVITY OF STUDENTS. IF SCHOOLS DON'T PASS SOME SORT OF POLICY, THEY WILL LOOSE FEDERAL SUBSIDIES IN THE SCHOOL LUNCH PROGRAM. MACHINES WILL STILL SELL WATER, SOME JUICES AND MILK DURING THE DAY. THE BOARD WILL ALSO LOOK AT ALTERNATIVES FOR STUDENTS TO GET MORE PHYSICAL ACTIVITY.
A BIRTH.....DR. JIM AND DAWN ABRAHAM OF MORINGTON, NORTH CAROLINA ARE THE PARENTS OF A BOY BORN TUESDAY. MATERNAL GRANDMOTEHR IS MARY BANOWETZ OF MAQUOKETA AND PATERNAL GRANDFATHER DELBERT BANOWETZ OF DUBUQUE.
HAVE A GOOD WEEKEND.

IT RAINED ON AND OFF TODAY....A LITTLE SUNSHINE THIS AFTENOON AND A HIGH TODAY OF 60.
JACKSON COUTY'S UNEMPLOYMENT RATE FOR FEBRUARY WAS 7 PERCENT, DOWN FROM 7.1 IN JANUARY. IT WAS AGAIN THE HIGHEST IN THE KMAQ AREA.
EARLIER THIS WEEK, I RAN INTO RICH KENDALL OF CEDAR RAPIDS WHO WAS IN TOWN TO VISIT HIS MOTHER. RICH AND WIFE CAROL, BOTH FORMER MAQUOKETA RESIDENTS, NOW OWN 3 CULVER RESTAURANTS.
ONE IN CEDAR RAPIDS, ONE NEAR CEDAR RAPIDS AT HIAWATHA, AND THE NEWEST JUST OPENED IN MARION AND WILL BE MANAGED BY THEIR
SON.
SORRY, BUT NOT MUCH HAPPENING THESE DAYS.
TAKE IT EASY.

FOR THE 2ND DAY IN A ROW...A HIGH OF 47. YESTERDAY, WE GOT 43/100 OF AN INCH OF RAIN.
THE JACKSON COUNTY SUPERVISORS VERBALLY AGREED THIS MORNING
TO CONTRACT WITH HILLCREST FAMILY SERVICES FOR MENTAL HEALTH SERVICES FOR JACKSON COUNTY RESIDENTS. THE PROPOSAL CALLS FOR THE COUNTY TO PAY $70,000 OVER THE NEXT 15 MONTHS FOR COUNTY RESIDENTS WHO QUALIFY. HILLCREST WILL ALSO PROVIDE MENTAL HEALTH SERVICES TO THE PUBLIC FOR A FEE. SERVICES BEGIN MONDAY.
HILLCREST WILL NOT OPERATE FROM THE DOWNTOWN OFFICE WHERE THE GANNON DID, BUT INSTEAD, AT OFFICES THEY ALREADY HAVE IN MAQUOKETA AT 714 WEST PLATT STREET.
LAST NIGHT AT A SPECIAL MEETING, THE MAQUOKETA CITY COUNCIL APPROVED ALTERNATIVE FUNDING FOR THE ARC WITHOUT USING GENERAL OBLIGATION BONDS. THAT MEANS THERE WILL NOT BE A VOTE THIS SPRING BY NEARLY 500 RESIDENTS WHO SIGNED PETITIONS FOR A VOTE. THE REASON THERE WILL NOW NOT BE AN ELECTION IS BECAUSE THE PETITIONS OBJECTED TO THE CITY USING G.O. BONDS TO PAY FOR
THE ARC. WHAT THE COUNCIL APPROVED LAST NIGHT WOULD BE A $1 MILLION DOLLAR LOAN FROM THE CITY RESERVES AND USING $750,000 IN TIF FINANCING REVENUE BONDS WHICH WOULD BE PAID BACK FROM THE TIMBER CITY INDUSTRIAL PARK TIF ACCOUNT. CITY MANAGER BRIAN WAGNER SAID THE PLAN WILL NOT USE TIF REVENUES FROM THE PROPOSED NEW SUPER WALMART AREA. NEXT STEP, TO OPEN BIDS FOR THE ESTIMATED $4.6 MILLIONS DOLLAR ARC NEXT TUESDAY. A SPECIAL MEETING WILL BE HELD THE FOLLOWING WEDNESDAY NIGHT TO MAKE A DECISION ON THE BIDS. IF THE BIDS ARE NOT OVER THE ESTIMATE, THE ARC PROJECT WILL BE ON THE WAY TO CONSTRUCTION, WITH THE CITY'S INVOLEMENT AT $3.2 MILLION OF THE PROJECT COST. IF THE BIDS ARE OVER, THERE WILL BE MORE DISCUSSION ABOUT WHAT TO DO.
NO BIRTHS OR DEATHS TO REPORT....
THANKS FOR THE VISIT.

HIGH TODAY, 47 AND THEN AFTER DINNER, IT STARTED TO RAIN AND WE HAD LIGHT RAIN ALL AFTERNOON. LOOKS LIKE WE COULD BE UP AROUND 60 ON WEDNESDAY.
THE 3RD ANNUAL RADIO-TELETHON FOR SUNSHINE SCHOOL SATURDAY NIGHT ON KMAQ-FM AND ACCESS CHANNEL 18, RAISED JUST OVER $10,000 AND WAS CONSIDERED A SUCCESS. NOT NEARLY AS MUCH AS THE FIRST TWO, BUT THOSE WERE BEFORE THE CITY CAME UP WITH A PLAN WHEREBY SUNSHINE GETS OVER $30,000 A YEAR TO PAY OFF THE LOAN ON THE BUILDING. THANKS TO ALL WHO PLEDGED (INCLUDING THE 3 THAT ARE READERS OF THIS DAILY) AND TO ALL THAT ENTERTAINED, MANNED PHONES OR HELPED IN ANY WAY. A COUPLE PICTURES OF IT AND SHORT VIDEO CAN BE SEEN ON THE KMAQ HOME PAGE, WWW.KMAQ.COM
SHORT COUNCIL MEETING TONIGHT ON THE ARC AND A SHORT SCHOOL BOARD MEETING TONIGHT ALSO.
THERE HAS BEEN A RUMOR THAT THE DOLLAR GENERAL STORE WILL MOVE TO THE JACK AND JILL BUILDING. NOT SO, SAYS A DG EMPLOYEE.
THERE IS A SIGN ON J & J BUILDING SAYING IT IS FOR SALE OR FOR LEASE.
HAVE A GOOD WEEK.

SUNNY AND HIGH TODAY OF 47.
BIG FIRE IN MAQUOKETA AT JUST AFTER 4 THIS MORNING. IT DESTROYED A MORE THAN HUNDRED YEAR OLD BUILDING. THE CALL WAS TO THE DEPOT BAR AND GRILL ON EAST PLATT. IT GUTTED THE BUILDING FROM FRONT TO BACK. THE BAR IS OWNED BY ERIC MOORE AND HE HAD PURCHASED THE BUILDING THIS PAST DECEMBER, FROM WIHDEN AND CAROLYN AISE. THE OPENED THE BUILDING FOR FOOD AND BEVERAGES IN 1997 AFTER DOING EXTENSIVE REMODELING OF THE 3,600 SQUARE FOOT BUILDING AND RAN IT UNTIL THEY CLOSED IT IN 2002. THE BUILDING, BELIEVED BUILT IN 1872, WAS THE ORIGINAL DEPOT TRAIN STATION FOR THE MILWUKEE RAILROAD. THE DEPOT BAR AND GRILL HAD A NORMAL TUESDAY NIGHT OF BUSINESS AND A FEW PATRONS WERE STILL ON HAND AT CLOSING TIME. MOORE, A BARTENDER AND SOME OF THE PATRONS WERE INTERVIEWED TODAY. MAQUOKETA FIREMEN SPENT 4 HOURS AT THE SCENE AND EAST PLATT STREET WAS CLOSED TO TRAFFIC SO A FIRE HOSE COULD BE RUN ACROSS THE STREET. THE FIRE MARSHALL HAS BEEN CALLED TO INVESTIGATE. HOW THE FIRE STARTED HAS NOT BEEN DETERMINED AT THIS TIME. YOU CAN SEE SEVERAL OF THE PICTURES I TOOK THIS AFTERNOON BY GOING TO THE KMAQ WEB SITE AT WWW.KMAQ.COM AND CLICK ON THE CAMERA. THE PHOTOS WILL BE ULP SOON. WILL BE UP SOON.
AS YOU WILL SEE, THE OUTER SHELL STILL STANDS, BUT WHETER OR NOT THE EXTERIOR OF THE BUILDING CAN BE SAVED AND THE INTERIOER REDONE, REMAINS TO BE SEEN.
AT 11:30, FIREMEN GOT A CALL TO GO TO BALDWIN TO THE QUARTER DECK BAR, BUT IT WAS JUST A MALFUNCTIONING ALARM. ON THE WAY, A FIRE TRUCK HIT A CAR THAT PULLED OUT IN FRONT OF THE TRUCK. MINOR DAMAGE. MAQUOKETA FIREMEN ARE UNDER CONTRACT WITH THE CITY OF BALDWIN TO ANSWER BALDWIN CITY FIRE CALLS.
AND..AS IS THE CASE SO MANY TIMES....AFTER A 2ND FIRE IN SAME DAY, THERE WILL OFTEN BE A 3RD CALL. IT CAME AT 3:05 THIS AFTERNOON TO A GRASS FIRE ON WEST SUMMIT STREET.
A BUSY DAY TODAY FOR MAQUOKETA FIREMEN.
THAT'S IT FOR TODAY.
GOOD WEDNESDAY NIGHT!

CLOUDY AND HIGH IN MID 30'S....WELL BELOW THE AVERAGE FOR THIS TIME OF YEAR.
AT THE CITY COUNCIL MEETING LAST NIGHT, MORE LIVELY DEBATE ON
THE ARC PROJECT. IT STARTED DURING THE AUDIENCE PORTION OF THE AGENDA. PAM ROSENBERG OF MAQUOKETA READ A PREPARED STATEMENT ON BEHALF OF HER HUSBAND JACK, CRITICIZING MAYOR TOM MESSERLI FOR HIS POSITION ON THE ARC PROJECT AND ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT IN GENERAL. ROSENBERG URGED THE COUNCIL TO MOVE FORWARD AND AVOID A CRISIS IN MAQUOKETA. I MISSED HER PRESENTATION ON ACCESS CHANNEL 18 LAST NIGHT, BUT HEARD THE REMARKS BY JACK HIMSELF AT THE MAQUOKETA ROTARY MEETING EARLIER THIS MONTH. THE ARC DREAM (BY SOME) HAS BEEN GOING ON FOR YEARS AND MORE RECENTLY, HAS STARTED TO DIVIDE THE TOWN.
DURING MUCH OF THE ARC DISCUSSION LAST NIGHT, BOND FINANCING METHODS WERE DISCUSSED UNTIL THE COUNCIL VOTED TO TABLE ACTION ON BOND FINANCING UNTIL AFTER THE BIDS ON THE ARC PROJECT ARE OPENED ON APRIL 4TH.
FIRE CALL LAST NIGHT TO 814 SOUTH MAIN STREET AT A DUPLEX OWNED BY TIM CLARK. A RENTER EXPERIENCED AN ELECTRICAL FIRE WHEN AN OUTLET OVERHEATED. A WALL IN THE AREA OF THE OUTLET WAS SCORCHED AND THERE WAS SOME MINOR SMOKE. MINOR DAMAGE.

THEY WERE ON THEIR WAY TO DECORAH WHERE OLDEST OF THEIR TWO SONS (NO GIRLS) IS A STUDENT AT LUTHER, WHERE TODD GRADUATED FROM. THEIR YOUNGER SON IS IN HIGH SCHOOL AND ALSO PLANS TO GO TO LUTHER.
DOUG, IS HIS NAME, AND HE RECENTLY WAS IN HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL AND ALSO JUST EARNED HIS EAGLE SCOUT. DR. BROMAN, BECAUSE OF A STROKE A COUPLE YEARS AGO, TALKS AND WALKS SLOWLY. DRIVES HIS CAR A LITTLE. LIVES IN HIS BIG HOUSE ON WEST SUMMIT STREET AND
MAKE TO THE WEEKLY ROTARY MEETING MOST WEDNESDAY. HIS WIFE DIED ABOUT A YEAR AGO. I'M SURE MANY OF YOU HAD HIM AS YOUR DOCTOR.
TEACHER CONFERENCES TOMORROW AND THURSDAY. SCHOOL WILL GET OUT AT 12:30 BOTH AFTERNOONS AND THERE WILL BE NO SCHOOL FRIDAY.
THE DAIRY BANQUET IS THIS SATURDAY NIGHT AT THE FAIRGROUNDS AND THE SUNSHINE RADIO-TELETHON IS FROM 5 UNTIL 9 P.M. THIS SATURDAY AT THE MAQUOKETA CITY HALL. CLOUDY AND LOW 40'S TODAY.
TESTING FOR THE CITY OF MAQUOKETA'S NEW MULTI-MILLION DOLLAR
WATER PROJECT WILL BEGIN THIS WEEK.
ROGER KIRBY OF ALLIANCE WATER RESOURCES SAID THE PROJECT IS EXPECTED TO BE COMPLETE AT THE END OF APRIL. THE WATER TREATMENT PLANT WAS REQUIRED BY THE DNR TO ELIMINATE RADIUM IN THE CITY'S WATER. OVER DECADES, THE LEVELS OF RADIUM IN THE WATER HAS NOT CHANGED, BUT NEW STIFFER STATE REQUIREMENTS MADE THE NEW PLANT NECESSARY. THE NEW PLANT IS LIKE A GIANT WATER SOFTENER. BUT PEOPLE WILL STILL NEED THEIR HOME
SOFETNERS. ONCE THE SYSTEM IF IN OPERATION AND WORKING FINE, THERE WILL BE AN OPEN HOUSE AT THE FACILITY AT THE NORTH EDGE OF TOWN.
A SEMI HIT SOME TRAFFIC LIGHTS IN DOWNTOWN MAQUOKETA MONDAY AFTERNOON....CORNER MAIN AND PLATT. HOW MANY TIMES THAT HAS HAPPENED OVER THE YEARS WOULD BE INTERESTING TO KNOW. SEMI OWNED BY BULLOCKS, INC. AND DRIVEN BY BRIAN JORDAN. MINOR DAMAGE TO THE LIGHTS AND SEMI.
WE WILL HAVE ANOTHER EMPTY STOREFRONT IN DOWNTOWN MAQUOKETA SOON. TRI-STATE UPHOLSTERY, A LONGTIME BUSINESS OWNED BY KEN AND DONNA RUPP, HAS BEEN SOLD AND WILL BE JOINED WITH A DUBUQUE UPHOLSTERY BUSINESS. THE WILL SERVICE THE MAQUOKETA AREA FROM THE DUBUQUE LOCATION. KEN AND DONNA WILL SEMI-RETIRE, KEEPING THEIR PART TIME MAINTENANCE JOB AT FIRST LUTHERAN CHURCH IN MAQUOKETA. THERE ARE ABOUT 10 EMPTY STORES DOWNTOWN.
AN OUT-OF-TOWN BIRTH: DRS. TRENT AND NICOLE TILTON OF GRAND RAPIDS, MICHIGAN ARE THE PARENTS OF A SON, TRYSTAN MICHAEL, BORN MARCH 2ND AT GRAND RAPIDS. THE PATERNAL GRANDPARENTS ARE FORMER MAQUOKETA RESIDENTS, DEAN AND KAREN TILTON OF THE VILLAGES, FLORIDA.

SUNNY AND A HIGH OF 41 TODAY...
A HOME IN NASHVILLE, WEST OF MAQUOKETA, WAS DESTROYED BY FIRE EARLY THIS MORNING. NEIGHBORS REPORTED THE FIRE AT 12:31 AND MAQUOKETA FIREMEN CALLED IN HELP FOR MANPOWER AND TANKERS FROM BALDWIN AND LOST NATION. THE HOME WAS OWNED BY MIKE AND CONNIE YAROLEM OF MAQUOKETA AND APPARENTLY NO ONE WAS LIVING IN THE HOME. IT TOOK ABOUT AN HOUR TO CONTAIN THE BLAZE.
NO DEATHS, BIRTHS OR MAQUOKETA SPORTS TODAY.
SOME TIME BACK I MENTIONED THAT MAQUOKETA WOULD HAVE A SHOE STORE AGAIN DOWNTOWN.
WELL, FIRST, I FORGOT THAT OSTERHAUS PHARMACY SELLS HEALTH RELATED SHOES.
BUT, AS FOR THE NEW PLACE....IT IS BILL MOLER'S STORE FOR MEN.
THEY NOW HAVE 'NOTHINZ'...CLOG SANDALS...FOR MEN AND WOMEN, IN A VARIETY COLORS, FOR $29.95 A PAIR. VERY POPULAR AND THESE FEATHERWEIGHT SHOES ARE SELLING WELL AT THE STORE, WITH A COUPLE RE-ORDERS ALREADY NECESSARY, SAYS OWNER, JAKE BICKFORD.
THIS YEAR, KMAQ HAS TO BROADCAST SOME EXHIBITION ST. LOUIS CARDINAL GAMES, AND OUR FIRST IS TOMORROW NOON, FROM FLORIDA, AGAINST THE MARLINS.
SORRY, ABOUT THE SHORT REPORT TODAY.
HAVE A NICE WEEKEND.
