HIGH OF 84 TODAY. WAS A GOOD DAY FOR THE FIRST FULL DAY OF THE JACKSON COUNTY FAIR.
THE FAIR PARADE LASTED OVER AN HOUR AND A HALF LAST NIGHT.
MAQUOKETA LIVESTOCK'S ENTRY "THE OLD BARN" TOOK FIRST PLACE IN THE ANTIQUE DIVISION
AND WAS NAMED THE OVER-ALL PARADE ENTRY TOO. I AGREE WITH THE JUDGE'S PICK...IT WAS A NICE FLOAT.
I DIDN'T SEE IT, BUT EVERYONE SAYS THE SCHOOL BUS RACE WAS FUNNY AND VERY WELL ACCEPTED.
ATTENDANCD, ABOUT 4,000, WAS VERY GOOD....PROBABLY THE BEST OPENING NIGHT ATTENDANCE EVER.
SORRY, THE WEB CAM DIDN'T WORK FOR THE PARADE. IT WAS WORKING, BUT COULDN'T HANDLE THE NUMBER OF PEOPLE THAT WANTED TO WATCH. NO ONE TOLD ME THIS WOULD HAPPEN. THERE IS NOTHING I CAN DO TO MAKE IT WORK IN THE FUTURE EITHER. THE WEB CAME WORKS FINE WHEN AN AVERAGE OF ONLY A FEW PEOPLE ARE BRINGING IT UP AT ANY ONE TIME.
THE JUNE UNEMPLOYMENT RATE FOR JACKSON COUNTY WENT UP SLIGHTLY FROM 5.4 PERCENT IN MAY TO 5.5 PERCENT IN JUNE.
IN MAGISTRATE COURT, MICHAEL SCHULZ, 43, OF MAQUOKETA, WAS CHARGED WITH THEFT IN THE 5TH DEGREE. MAQUOKETA POLICE SAY SCHULZ WENT TO "CAN CITY" ON EAST PLATT IN MAQUOKETA
(JOHN WAGENER, OWNER) AND RETURNED 75 CANS. HE ALTERED THE SLIP TO READ 475 CANS AND RECEIVED AN EXTRA $20. CAN CITY IS ALSO SEEKING RESTITUTION.
TWO VEHICLES COLLIDED JUST BEFORE THE PARADE YESTERDAY AFTERNOON. ONE DRIVEN BY NORMA CROUCH, 76, OF MAQUOKETA AND OTHER BY JACK PARMER, AGE 50, OF MAQUOKETA.
NO INJURIES. OVER $1,000 DAMAGE TO BOTH CARS.
TAKE CARE.
