NICE DAY IN MAQUOKETA.

THE MAQUOKETA CARDINALS BEAT DEWITT LAST NIGHT, 27 TO 17.
THEY ENDED THE SEASON WITH A DISTRICT RECORD OF 4 AND 3 AND AN OVERALL RECORD OF 4 AND 5. AND...2 OR 3 OF THEIR LOSSES WERE TO TOP 10 TEAMS.

ROBERT T. MELVOLD, 87, DIED ABOUT 8 LAST NIGHT AT THE JACKSON COUNTY PUBLIC HOSPITAL EXTENDED CARE UNIT , OF CHRONIC OBSTRUCTIVE PULMONARY DISEASE. HE HAD BEEN AT THE CARE UNIT FOR QUITE A FEW MONTHS, AND
HAD HIS COMPUTER NEXT TO HIS BED. HIS LAST WEEKLY COLUMN APPEARED IN TODAY'S MAQUOKETA SENTINEL-PRESS, AND HAD TO DO WITH THE CHICAGO WHITE SOX. HE WROTE SOME GREAT COLUMNS AND I AND MANY, MANY READERS WILL MISS THEM. HE HAD A FANTASIC MEMORY ABOUT.....EVERYTHING. HE GRADUATED FROM THE UNIVERSITY OF IOWA IN 1940 AND HE AND HIS WIFE, FRANCIS (NATIVES OF CRESCO) , CAME TO MAQUOKETA IN APRIL OF 1946 AND PURCHASED THE THEN 14-YEAR OLD MAQUOKETA COMMUNITY PRESS. SOON AFTER, HE PURCHASED THE OTHER PAPER, THE 92-YEAR OLD JACKSON SENTINEL.
HE ALSO OWNED THE BELLEVUE HERALD-LEADER AND WAS PAST PART-OWNER OF THE DEWITT OBSERVER AND PAST OWNER OF THE NORTH SCOTT PRESS.
OVER THE YEARS, I TALKED TO HIM OFTEN AT MAQUOKETA ROTARY MEETINGS. HE WAS A LONGTIME ROTARIAN. MY LAST VISIT WITH HIM WAS IN JULY AT THE HOSPITAL. I HAD MENT TO GO BACK AGAIN, BUT, SORRY TO SAY, NEVER DID MAKE IT. WE JOKED OFTEN ABOUT WHICH NEWS MEDIA WAS BETTER, NEWSPAPER OR RADIO. REALLY SOMETHING..... NEARLY 60 YEARS AS A NEWSPAPERMAN AND
COMMUNITY LEADER. HE IS SURVIVED BY HIS WIFE AND AND SIX CHILDREN.
MAQUOKETA LOST A "GIANT" OF A CITIZEN LAST NIGHT. SERVICES ARE PENDING AND I WILL HAVE MORE INFORMATION NEXT WEEK.

A MAQUOKETA RESTUARANT HAS BEEN SOLD. AND THE LAKEHURST DAM HAS BEEN SOLD. MORE NEXT WEEK..... CHECK IN DAILY.

THE OVEFR 25 PHOTOS OF THE HURST HOTEL RENOVATION WORK ARE NOW UP ON THE KMAQ WEB SITE....CLICK ON THE CAMERA.

HAVE A GOOD WEEKEND.

BEAUTIFUL FALL DAY IN MAQUOKETA...SUNNY AND LOW 60'S.
LAST NIGHT'S LOW WAS 28.

GOT AN EMAIL A FEW DAYS AGO FROM JIM FRANDSEN, A MAQUOKETA HIGH SCHOOL 1952 GRAD.
JIM, GRADUATED FROM IOWA IN 1962 AND NOW HAS TWO HOMES....IN OXNARD, CALIFORNIA AND IN MESQUITE, NEVADA. HE RECENTLY HAD TWO INTERESTING EVENTS HAPPEN TO HIM.
ONE: HE PLAYED GOLF WITH HAYDEN FRY AND HIS WIFE. ALSO IN FOURSOME WAS TOM BERTHEL AND HIS WIFE DEANNA. HAYDEN IS THE FORMER, GREAT IOWA FOOTBALL COACH, AND TOM WAS, I BELIEVE, AN ELWOOD HIGH SCHOOL GRAD AND HIS WIFE I THINK GRADUATED FROM MAQUOKETA IN THE EARLY 70'S. HAYDEN LIVES OUT THERE, IN A GATED COMMUNITY. AND TWO: JIM MET JACK LELANNE, NOW 91, IN A CALIFORNIA RESTUAURANT. HE IS THE FORMER TV STAR THAT PUSHED PHYSICAL CONDITIONING. ANYONE WANTING JIM'S EMAIL ADDRESS CAN EMAIL ME.

MAQUOKETA HOSTS DEWITT IN FOOTBALL TONIGHT. THE CARDINALS HAVE A GOOD CHANCE OF WINNING THIS FINAL GAME OF SEASON.

WANT TO MOVE TO MAQUOKETA? THERE'S A RURAL HOME, NOT FAR FROM TOWN, THAT WENT ON THE MARKET RECENTLY AT AROUND $1.5 MILLION. HAS FARM LAND WITH IT.

TRICK OR TREAT HOURS WILL BE 4 TO 6 P.M. SUNDAY.

BEAUTIFUL DAY. STARTED WITH RAIN AROUND 7:30 .. NICE RAIN.. THEN THE SUN CAME OUT AT ABOUT 10 AND INTO THE 70'S IN THE AFTERNOON.

THE MAQUOKETA CARDINAL FOOTBALL TEAM LOST TO MARION, 13 TO 0 FRIDAY NIGHT.....ALL SCORING IN THE FIRST HALF. MARION IS UNDEFEATED AND RANKED 3RD IN STATE, SO MAQUOKETA DID WELL AND IF IT WERE NOT FOR 3 OR 4 TURNOVERS, MIGHT HAVE WON THE GAME.

I HAVE NOT SAID MUCH ABOUT THE HIGH SCHOOL VOLLEYBALL TEAM....THEY ARE HAVING A PRETTY BAD SEASON. AND TOURNAMENT TIME IS HERE.

MAQUOKETA TRICK OR TREAT HOURS THIS YEAR WILL BE 4 TO 6 P.M. ON SUNDAY, OCT 30TH.

THE DUBUQUE CHORALE, DIRECTED BY ITS FOUNDER, DENNIS WILLIAMS, PRESENTED HANDEL'S MESSIAH YESTERDAY AFTERNOON AT THE NEW OHNWARD FINE ARTS CENTER AUDITORIUM. THERE WERE ABOUT 60 SINGERS AND 20 IN THE ORCHESTRA. THE EVENT WAS HOSTED BY THE OHNWARD CENTER.
ABOUT 150 ATTENDED. SHOULD HAVE BEEN MORE! IT WAS A GREAT PERFORMANCE. I REALLY ENJOYED IT AND SO DID EVERYONE ELSE. THE PUBLICITY ON IT WAS VERY POOR AND THE WEATHER WAS TERRIFIC, SO THOSE WERE TWO FACTORS ON LOW TURNOUT. DR. CRAIG ROSE, FORMER MAQUOKETA DOCTOR, WHO MOVED TO DUBUQUE IN THE 70'S, WAS ONE OF THE SINGERS. IN FACT, HE HAD A SOLO AND DID VERY WELL, ESPECIALLY SINCE HE WAS A FILL-IN FOR A SINGER THAT HAD A SORE THROAT. THE SHOW LASTED 2 AND 1/2 HOURS AND AFTER, THE GROUP WENT TO THE DECKER HOTEL FOR DINNER. YESTERDAY, WAS THE FIRST TIME I SAW THE NEW STAGE CURTAIN USED FOR A PERFORMANCE.
