AT MANCHESTER, THE CARDINAL GIRLS WON, 52 TO 41. FRIDAY NIGHT THEY PLAY WESTERN DUBUQUE.

MATT WINEGAR ROLLED A 300 THIS WEEK AT TIMBER LANES...AND ENDED WITH A 725 SERIES.

SHERI GLICK-CONDE, 48, OF ORLANDO, DIED LAST THURSDAY IN FLORIDA. SHE WAS BORN IN MAQUOKETA, DAUGHTER OF WARREN AND BETTY MELCHERT, WHO NOW LIVE IN SUN CITY WEST, ARIZONA. SHE IS SURVIVED BY 2 SONS AND HER PARENTS.

NEW ST. REP. TOM SCHUELLER OF MAQUOKETA WAS TAPPED LAST WEEK TO WORK ON TWO SUBCOMMITTEES THAT WILL EXAMINE THE IMPACT OF TAX AND FEES ON IOWA BUSINESSES, AS WELL AS THE CURRENT BUSINESS CLIMATE IN IOWA.

BEAUTIFUL DAY TODAY, SUNNY AND HIGH OF 40.

SOMETHING NEW TO TRY: KMAQ HAS A WEB CAM NOW. IT IS CURRENTLY POINTED OUTSIDE THE KMAQ WINDOW AT THE POST OFFICE. DAYTIMES, THE QUALITY IS GOOD BECAUSE OF THE LIGHT. EVENINGS, WITH JUST STREET LIGHTING, THE QUALITY IS NOT TOO GOOD.


THE WEB CAM IS WIRELESS, SO WE WILL BE POINTING IT AT DIFFERENT THINGS.
SOMETIME, I MIGHT EVEN POINT IT AT ME WHEN DOING THIS REPORT. ANOTHER TOY FOR WEB CRUISERS.

A MURAL HAS BEEN DISCOVERED AFTER TAKING COVER OFF A WALL IN THE COURTHOUSE. NOW THE QUESTION FOR SUPERVISORS...SHOULD IT BE PRESERVED. OR COULD IT BE MOVED? IT IS A PRAIRIE SCENE WITH BUFFALOS AND LOCATED ON THE WALL NEAR THE FORMER MAIN DOOR AT THE COURTHOUSE IN DOWNTOWN MAQUOKETA.

JOYCE MANNING, 42, OF MAQUOKETA, LOST SIGHT OF THE ROAD BECAUSE OF BLOWING SNOW EARLY SATURDAY MORNING AND HER CAR WENT INTO THE DITCH, CAUSING $2,500 DAMAGE TO HER 87 FORD.

LIGHT SNOW THIS AFTERNOON AND STILL PREDICTING 5 TO 8 INCHES BY TOMORROW NIGHT.

THERE IS A WOMEN'S HEALTH FAIR AT THE NEW COMFORT INN TOMORROW, WITH MANY EXHIBITORS.
IT WILL BE ON DESPITE THE WEATHER, AS BOOTHS ARE BEING SET UP TONIGHT.

THE BASKETBALL GAMES TONIGHT, BOYS HERE IN TOWN AND GIRLS AT VINTON, HAVE BEEN POSTPONED UNTIL MONDAY NIGHT, JANUARY 31ST, VARSITY ONLY, AT 6:30 AT BOTH MAQUOKETA AND VINTON.

LAST NIGHT AT EPWORTH, THE MAQUOKETA CARDINAL WRESTLERS BEAT CAMANCHE FIRST AND THEN THE TEAM LOST LATER IN THE EVENING TO WESTERN DUBUQUE.

THE JACKSON COUNTY BOARD OF SUPERVISORS HAVE RECEIVED 450 SIGNATURES ASKING THAT ROUTES BE DESIGNATED FOR ALL-TERRAIN VEHICLES. THE REQUEST WAS MADE BY GARY KLEPPE, ON BEHALF OF THE NEW COUNTY ATV CLUB. SUPERVIORS DID NOT ACT ON THE REQUEST, BUT WILL CONSIDER IT AFTER TALKING WITH THE COUNTY ENGINEER AND ATTORNEY.

THE FAMILY DOLLAR DISTRIBUTION CENTER SOUTH OF MAQUOKETA HAS 371 EMPLOYEES NOW AND ON ANY GIVEN DAY, THEY HAVE 50 TO 75 JOB OPENINGS. THEY ARE FINDING IT DIFFICULT TO FILL THEIR JOBS. TO MEET DEMANDS, MANY EMPLOYEES ARE WORKING EXTRA HOURS.

JACKSON COUNTY'S DECEMBER UNEMPLOYMENT RATE, ANNOUNCED THIS WEEK, WAS AT 6.8 PERCENT, UP FROM 5.9 IN NOVEMBER. A YEAR AGO DECEMBER, IT WAS 7 PERCENT.

HIGH OF 30 TODAY. A LITTLE SNOW IN FORECAST TONIGHT.

A WELL KNOWN MAQUOKETA RESIDENT DIED SUDDENLY AROUND 10:30
LAST NIGHT FROM A HEART ATTACK AT HIS HOME. JAKE NELLES, AGE 80,
WAS BORN IN GERMANY, MOVED TO CANADA IN THE 50'S AND TO IOWA
IN THE 60'S. HE STARTED WORK AS A CHEESEMAKER AT PRESTON IN 1965 AND THAT WAS THE YEAR ALSO THAT HE MOVED TO MAQUOKETA. SOME YEARS LATER HE BUILDT A BIG SWISS CHALET HOME ON PERSHING ROAD OVERLOOKING MAQUOKETA. THE HOME WAS SHIPPED TO MAQUOKETA AND ASSEMBLED BY CONTRACTORS FROM SWITZERLAND. IN LATER YEARS, HE WAS A MOZZERELLA CHEESE SPECIALIST AND CONSULTANT AND TRAVELED IN THE UNITED STATES AND ABROAD. HE HAD SEVERAL CHEESE PATENTS THAT HE WAS VERY PROUD OT. HE LOVED CHEESE AND GAVE GUESTS TO HIS HOME SOME CHEESE TO TAKE WITH THEM. LAST FALL HE AND HIS WIFE MARIANNE CELEBRATED THEIR 50TH WEDDING ANNIVERSARY WITH A BIG DINNER PARTY AND PROGRAM AT THE COMFORT INN SOUTH OF TOWN. THE PROGRAM WAS PUT ON MY HIS 3 CHILDREN. HE IS SURVIVED BY HIS WIFE, SON JOHN FROM CANADA, SON PETER FROM MADISON AND DAUGHTER CATHY FROM DULUTH. THIS PAST CHRISTMAS EVE, HE CELEBRATED HIS 80TH BIRTHDAY. JAKE COULD TELL A LOT OF STORIES ABOUT HIS CHEESEMAKING CAREER AND THE OLD COUNTRY. NANCY AND I WERE INVITED TO HIS HOME A YEAR AGO CHRISTMAS TIME AND WE HAD CHEESE AND PIZZA AND I LISTENED FOR A COUPLE HOURS, TO A VERY INTERESTING GUY AND HIS STORIES ABOUT HIS TIME IN WORLD WAR 2 (HE WAS WOUNDED IN RUSSIA IN 1944). HE WAS A NICE GUY, ANOTHER ONE OF THOSE SPECIAL "ONE-OF-A-KIND" RESIDENTS MAQUOKETA IS WELL KNOWN FOR. SERVICES ARE PENDING AT THE CARSON AND SON FUNERAL HOME IN MAQUOKETA.
REST IN PEACE JAKE AND START PROMOTING MOZZERELLA IN HEAVEN.

THE MAQUOKETA BOYS LOST TO DEWITT, THERE, LAST NIGHT. GOOD GAME.
DEWITT IS #10 IN THE STATE. MAQUOKETA WON THE SOPHOMORE GAME IN OVERTIME.

WAS SUPPOSED TO BE NO SCHOOL TODAY FOR MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR. HOLIDAY, BUT TODAY WAS A SNOW MAKE-UP DAY.

WEEKEND SPORTS: MAQUOKETA BOYS AND GIRLS LOST TO BENTON COMMUNITY
FRIDAY NIGHT AND BOTH TEAMS ALSO LOST TO DYERSVILLE BECKMAN SATURDAY
NIGHT. THE BOYS ARE 1 AND 8 OVERALL AND 1 AND 6 IN THE WAMAC AND THE GIRLS ARE 4 AND 7 OVERALL AND 3 AND 5 IN THE WAMAC.

THE MAQUOKETA WRESTLERS HOSTED A DUALS TOURNAMENT AT THE GYM SATURDAY. THE CARDINALS WENT 1 AND 3 ON THE DAY, THE ONLY WIN OVER DAVENPORT NORTH. MAQUOKETA IS 4 AND 5 IN DUAL MEETS.

TONIGHT, THE GIRLS HAVE A MAKE-UP GAME AT DEWITT AND THE CARDINAL WRESTLERS HOST DEWITT ON MAKE-UP WRESTLING. WE WILL BROADCAST THE BASKETBALL GAME ON AM AND THE WRESTLING MEETING ON FM.

MAQUOKETA MIDDLE SCHOOL PRINCIPAL KELLY MONONY WILL BE LEAVING MAQUOKETA AT THE END OF THE SCHOOL YEAR TO BE AN ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL AT A NEW BIG MIDDLE SCHOOL AT DUBUQUE.

THE MAQUOKETA CITY COUNCIL WILLL MEET TONIGHT AND IS EXPECTED TO APPROVE A NEW COUNCILMAN APPOINTMENT. HE/SHE WOULD TAKE THE SEAT LEFT WHEN TOM SCHUELLER WAS ELECTED STATE REPRESENTATIVE.

A BIG TRACTORCADE WILL VISIT MAQUOKETA IN JUNE. ABOUT 450 CLASSIC TRACTORS WILL PULL INTO MAQUOKETA JUNE 13TH AND STAY OVERNIGHT AT THE FAIRGROUNDS.

WE HAVE HAD NO LOCAL DEATHS FOR ABOUT A WEEK.

A NEW SUPER WAL MART RECENTLY OPENED. AND IN THE DUBUQUE TH YESTERDAY, THE STORY ABOUT TWO IRISHMEN THAT BUILDT AN 80 ROOM IRISH HOTEL AND IRISH PUB/RESTAIRMAT AT THE EDGE OF TOWN. MOST OF FURNISHINGS SHIPPED TO GALENA FROM IRELAND. MANY OF THE EMPLOYEES MOVED TO GALENA FROM IRELAND TO WORK AT THE PLACE AND THEIR SAYING IS, EVERY DAY IS ST. PATRICK'S DAY THERE. I'M ANXIOUS TO SEE IT.

DOTTIE BAYLES OF KMAQ YESTERDAY STOPPED AT RADIO SHACK, OUT BY WAL MART, AND COULD NOT STOP HER MINI VAN AND RAN INTO THE FRONT OF BUILDING. MINOR DAMAGE TO HER VAN, BUT WALL DAMAGE TO THE BUILDING. WINDOW OF BUILDING DID NOT BREAK AND DOTTIE WAS NOT INJURED.

THE INCIDENT OCCURED FRIDAY NIGHT IN AN APARTMENT ON WESTERN AVENUE.

BETTY MCKINNON, AGE 72, OF MAQUOKETA, DIED SATURDAY AT THE LOCAL HOSPITAL.
SHE WAS A HOMEMAKER AND IS SURVIVED BY 4 CHILDREN, INCLUDING ROGER BOWLING OF MAQUOKETA, AND A SISTER, DORIS EHL OF MAQUOKETA.

CLIFFORD CASTEEL, 97, OF MAQUOKETA, DIED SATURDAY AT THE LOCAL HOSPITAL.
IN THE 30'S HE HAD A GROCERY STORE IN MAQUOKETA AND THEN WORKED AT VARIOUS OCCUPATIONS OUTSIDE MAQUOKETA OVER THE YEARS. HE AND HIS WIFE EDNA RETURNED TO MAQUOKETA IN 1978 TO MAKE THEIR HOME. HE IS SURVIVED BY A SISTER-IN-LAW, DOROTHY RASMUSSEN OF MAQUOKETA.

PAUL FORST, AGE 80, WHO OWNED A SHOE STORE IN MAQUOKETA IN THE 60'S AND 70'S, DIED LAST FRIDAY AT HIS HOME IN LAS VEGAS. HE IS SURVIVED BY HIS WIFE IN LAS VEGAS (HIS FIRST WIFE BETTY LIVES IN IOWA) AND TWO SONS.

28 THE HIGH TODAY. LIGHT SNOW UNTIL ABOUT 9 A.M. LOOKING FOR A HIGH IN THE MID 30'S ON SUNDAY AND AROUND 40 EARLY NEXT WEEK.

THE COUNTY CREWS ARE STILL WORKING ON COUNTRY ROADS...BUT IN TOWN,
MOST OF THE STREET WORK IS FINISHED. WORKMEN SPENT MOST OF THE NIGHT LAST NIGHT HAULING SNOW FROM THE DOWNTOWN AND OTHER OTHERS OF THE CITY. A MAQUOKETA SNOWPLOW WAS IN A MINOR ACCIDENT THURSDAY ON NORTH ARCADE STREET, BACKING INTO A PARKED CAR. THE FIRE DEPARTMENT
TODAY URGED THOSE WITH A FIRE HYDRANT ON THEIR PROPERTY TO SHOVEL AROUND IT. AND SUPT. KIM HUCKSTADT SAID TODAY, ONE OF THE SCHOOL DAYS THIS WEEK WILL BE MADE UP AT EASTER VACATION TIME AND THE OTHER TWO AT THE END OF THE SCHOOL YEAR. SCHOOL WILL NOW RUN INTO JUNE.

A PAIR OF TRUMPETER SWANS WERE RELEASED THIS WEEK IN A PROTECTED AREA NEAR THE NEW HURSTVILLE INTREPRETIVE CENTER JUST NORTH OF TOWN.
THEY HAD BEEN IN THEIR CARRIERS FOR 24 HOURS AND WERE VERY CONTENT TO GET INTO THE FRESH WATER. THE 4 YEAR-OLDS, A MALE AND A FEMALE, WILL LIVE ON THE GROUNDS, AND WILL BE A BIG ATTRACTION FOR THE CENTER IN THE MONTHS AHEAD. TRUMPETER SWANS MATE FOR LIFE AND CAN LIVE 20 TO 30 YEARS. THEY CAN WEIGH UP TO 35 POUNDS AND HAVE A WINGSPAN OF UP TO 8 FEET. THE IOWA DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES IS SPONSORING AND IN CHARGE OF THE SWAN RESTORATION PROGRAM IN IOWA. THE RESTORATION PROGRAM BEGAN IN 1995, AND BEFORE THEN, THE LAST PRE-RESTORATION WILD NEST IN IOWA WAS IN 1883. NEXT TIME YOU COME HOME TO MAQUOKETA, BE SURE YOU PLAN TO VIST THE NEW HURSTVILLE INTREPRETIVE CENTER, INSIDE AND OUT.

THE FUNERAL SERVICE FOR LLOYD CLARK, 84, WILL BE TOMORROW AFTERNOON AT CARSON'S. HE WAS A WORLD WAR 2 VETERAN AND WORKED IN CONSTRUCTION ALL OF HIS LIFE. HE IS SURVIVED BY HIS WIFE BARBARA, A DAUGHTER, CAROLYN YEAGER OF MAQUOKETA AND 3 GRANDSONS, AND 2 BROTHERS, SONNY CLARK AND ALLEN CLARK, BOTH OF MAQUOKETA.

THE MAQUOKETA BOYS HOST WATERLOO COLUMBUS IN WAMAC BASKETBALL TONIGHT AND THE GIRLS ARE AT WATERLOO.

THE SNOW STOPPED AT 9 THIS MORNING. HAVE HAD SUNSHINE SINCE. TOTAL OF
JUST OVER 12 INCHES.....MAQUOKETA, HAD THE MOST SNOW OF ANY CITIES IN
EASTERN IOWA. I TOOK TWO PICTURES OF THE SNOW DOWNTOWN AND BOTH CAN BE SEEN ON THE KMAQ HOME PAGE...CLICK ON DENNIS' DAILY PHOTOS.
A JACKSON COUNTY SNOWPLOW WENT INTO THE DITCH THIS MORNING AND THE DRIVER WAS NOT INJURED. NO DETAILS AVAILABLE OTHER THAN IT HAPPENED IN THE OTTER CREEK AREA. NO SCHOOL AGAIN TODAY.....NONE OF THE SCHOOLS
IN THE KMAQ AREA HAD SCHOOL.

A VEHICLE RAN INTO A SEMI AT FAMILY DOLLAR YESTERDAY AFTERNOON AND NO ONE WAS HURT. POLICEMAN KEN SPARKS EMILY MCCONNELL, AGE 24, WAS DRIVING A SEMI AND STOPPED AT THE INTERSECTION AAT FAMILY DOLLAR PARKWAY. CHERNENKO ISAAC, AGE 20, SLID ON THE SNOW AND ICE AND HIT THE REAR END OF THE TRUCK. DAMAGES OF $5,000 TO THE ISAAC DODGE REGISTERED TO WIDHEN AISE OF MAQUOKETA AND NO DAMAGE TO THE SEMI.

SERVICES ARE PENDING FOR LLOYD CLARK, AGE 84, OF MAQUOKETA, WHO DIED YESTERDAY AT THE CRESTRIDGE NURSING HOME.
AND SERVICES ARE ALSO PENDING AT SCHULTZ FUNERAL HOME IN DEWITT OF GLEN DUNNEGAN, AGE 82, OF MAQUOKETA, WHO DIED TODAY AT HIS HOME IN MAQUOKETA.

OUR CONGRESSMAN, JIM NUSTLE, FROM MANCHESTER, IS GOING TO RUN FOR
GOVERNOR. HE'S A REPUBLICAN.

TONIGHT, WILL BE COLD, ABOUT 5 ABOVE. LOOKING AHEAD, WE ARE LOOKING FOR A HIGH SUNDAY IN THE MID TO UPPER 30'S. THERE GOES SOME OF THE
SNOW.

SOME CLOSED EARLY THIS AFTERNOON.
MANY CANCELLATIONS OF MEETINGS TONIGHT.

NO SCHOOL IN MAQUOKETA YESTERDAY, BECAUSE OF ICEY ROADS.
SCHOOL TODAY, BUT NOW 8-10 INCHES OF SNOW IN FORECAST STARTING TONIGHT AND GOING UNTIL EARLY THURSDAY MORNING. THE BASKETBALL GAMES HERE IN MAQUOKETA AND AT DYERSVILLE WERE JUST CALLED OFF FOR TONIGHT AND RE-SCHEDULED FOR SATURDAY, JANUARY 15TH.

THE CITY COUNCIL MET LAST NIGHT AND FOUND OUT THEY COULD NOT APPOINT A NEW COUNCILMAN (TO REPLACE TOM SCHUELLER) UNTIL THEY PUBLISHED A NOTICE OF VACANCY. SO FAR, 3 PEOPLE HAVE APPLIED FOR THE POSITION.
UNLESS THERE IS A PETITION CALLING FOR A SPEICAL ELECTION (NOT EXPECTED), THE COUNCIL WILL APPOINT A NEW MEMBER AT THE NEXT MEETING ON
JANUARY 17TH.

BOARD MEMBERS OF THE MAQUOKETA MUNICIPAL ELECTRIC LIGHT AND POWER LATE LAST YEAR ASKED FOR AN INCREASE IN THEIR PER MEETING PAYMENT FROM $25 TO $40 AND IT WAS APPROVED LAST NIGHT.

THE PROJECT TO ELIMINATE RADIUM (WHICH HAS BEEN THERE FRO UMTEEN YEARS) IN THE CITY WATER, IS ESTIMATED TO COST $4.5 MILLION.
A PUBLIC HEARING ON THE PLANS AND SPECS IS SCHEDULED FOR FEBRUARY 7TH.
THE WATER BILLS WILL BE GOING UP FOR EVERYONE.

A BREAK-IN AT THE FIRST BAPTIST CHURCH SOMETIME YESTERDAY..ON WEST PLATT STREET, NETTED THE THIEF $150 IN CASH.

HARVEY EHLERS , RURAL MAQUOKETA, REPORTED SOMEONE VANDALIZED HIS 91 BLAZER. NO DAMAGE AMOUNT LISTED. THIS HAPPENED LAST NIGHT.

BAD WEATHER YESTERDAY, BUT 73 BRAVED THE ICEY CONDITIONS AND WENT TO THE GROSSMAN CENTER IN DELMAR TO GIVE BLOOD. HAVE YOU GIVEN BLOOD

SAGE ROSENFELS PLAYED THE ENTIRE GAME AT QUARTERBACK SUNDAY FOR THE DOLPHINS...AND THREW FOR 264 YARDS, ONE GOOD FOR A 74-YARD TOUCHDOWN.
UNFORTUNATELY HE ALSO THREW 3 INTERSEPTIONS AND THE TEAM LOST
BY 7 POINTS TO A TEAM WITH A BETTER RECORD (BALTIMORE) AND A TEAM THAT NEEDED TO WIN FOR ANY CHANCE AT ALL FOR THE PLAYOFFS. ANYWAY...I HEARD THE GAME HERE ON MY COMPUTER AND I'M HAPPY FOR SAGE....HE DEFINITLY GOT A BOOST FOR HIS NFL CAREER BECAUSE OF THE GAME. WILL BE FUN NOW TO
FIND OUT THIS WINTER WHAT HIS FATE (WHAT TEAM HE WILL PLAY FOR) WILL BE FOR NEXT YEAR.

AND HOW ABOUT THOSE HAWKEYES AND THAT LAST SECOND VICTORY??!!!
TOO BAD THE ST. LOUIS CARDINALS DIDN'T PULL OFF SOME WORLD SERIES WINS LIKE THAT.
