BEAUTIFUL DAY..HIGH OF 74. BUT, TOMORROW, AN 80 PERCENT CHANCE OF RAIN AND TOMORROW NIGHT, A LOW OF30-32.
THIS AFTERNOON, I SPENT A DELIGHTFUL 3-HOURS ON THE BEAUTIFUL MAQUOKETA RIVER. I HAVE LIVED IN MAQUOKETA 46 YEARS AND HAVE NEVER BEEN ON A BOAT ON THE MAQUOKETA. I TOLD THIS RECENTLY TO KENNY WIDEL OF CANTON, MY WIFE NANCY'S UNCLE, AND HE TOLD ME HE WOULD TAKE ME FOR A RIDE IN HIS BOAT SOON. TODAY WAS THE DAY. WE HIT THE WATER AT 12:30 AND GOT BACK AT 3:30. FOR THE MOST PART, IT WAS A SLOW, QUIET RIDE TO OBSERVE THE BEAUTY OF THE SHORELINES. KENNY'S BOAT IS A 16-FOOT ALUMACRAFT, WITH 3 MOTORS, INCLUDING A 1956 EVENRUDE THAT PURRS LIKE A KITTEN. WE ALSO USED HIS BIGGER JOHNSON TO GO A LITTLE FASTER FOR AWHILE. AND HE HAS A TROLLING MOTOR. ANYWAY, WE PUT IN AT THE JOINERVILLE PARK BOAT RAMP WEST OF MAQUOKETA. FIRST WE WENT DOWNSTREAM TO THE DAM AND THEN CAME BACK TO J OINERVILLE AND WENT UPSTREAM A FEW MILES UNTIL THE WATER WAS GETTING A LITTLE SHALLOW. I HAD ALWAYS BEEN TOLD HOW BEAUTIFUL THE MAQUOKETA RIVER WAS...AND NOW I KNOW. I'M SURE THERE ARE MANY OTHER MAQUOKETANS WHO HAVE NOT HAD THE EXPERIENCE AND I SURE HOPE THEY ALSO GET A CHANCE. THE LEAVES ARE STARTING TO TURN, AND I'M SURE IN A COUPLE WEEKS, THE TRIP WILL BE EVEN MORE SCENIC. KENNY, WHO IS RETIRED, AND HAD A CAREER THAT INCLUDED WORKING FOR CLINTON ENGINES FOR 22 YEARS, WAS A PERFECT HOST AND COULD POINT OUT LOTS OF INTERESTING THINGS. I COULD GO ON AND ON ABOUT THE TRIP, BUT NEED TO MOVE ALONG ON THIS REPORT. THANKS KENNY.
THE MAQUOKETA SPORTRS BOOSTERS CLUB IS HAVING A RAFFLE FOR A 2005 FORD FOCUS AND THE DRAWING WILL BE A WEEK FROM TOMORROW DURING THE HOMECOMING GAME. THERE WILL ALSO BE THREE $250 PRIZES. $20 A TICKET. SEND ME YOUR TWENTY BUCKS....AND HELP THIS GREAT CLUB THAT HAS DONE SO MUCH FOR SPORTS IN MAQUOKETA. I'LL ENTER YOUR NAME ON YOUR TICKET AND LIST YOU HERE ON THIS REPORT AS A BOOSTER...AND THE MORNING AFTER THE DRAWING, WILL COME ON LINE WITH THE WINNERS.
MAKE YOUR CHECK OUT TO MAQUOKETA SPORTS BOOSTERS AND MAIL IT TO KMAQ, BOX 940, MAQUOKETA, IOWA 52060.
WE NOW HAVE A NEW KMAQ GUEST BOOK. CHECK IT OUT. BUT, IF YOU MAKE AN ENTRY, DO NOT CLICK ON THE SMALL SQUARE ABOUT PRIVATE ENTRY. I WILL NOT TAKE TIME TO LOOK AT PRIVATE ENTRIES. THANKS.

I'M BACK...
NANCY AND I AND GRANDKIDS NATE AND SARA ENJOYED DINNER....AT THE HISTORIC DECKER HOTEL...SERVING MAQUOKETA PROUDLY SINCE 1876. THE 18TH ROOM WAS JUST RE-DONE...AND NOW ALL 18 ROOMS ARE JUST LIKE NEW...BUT WITH THAT TOUCH OF YESTERYEAR. ALL WITH NEW BATHROOMS. IN ITS EARLY DAYS...IT HAD THICK ROPES IN SOME ROOMS....TO THROW OUT THE WINDOW FOR FIRE ESCAPE. THE NEAT RESTAURANT IS TO THE BACK ON THE MAIN FLOOR, WITH A SMALL PRIVATE ROOM ADJACENT FOR PARTIES (KIWANIS HAS ITS WEEKLY MEETING IN THE ROOM) AND DOWNSTAIRS, THERE'S THE PUB BAR AND THE WALLS STILL ARE OF KNOTTY PINE, THE POPULAR "PANELING" OF MANY YEARS AGO. TROY AND RAEANN OWN IT AND RUN IT....THEY ARE PAST THEIR MID 30'S AND HAVE 2 BOYS IN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL AND A CUTE LITTLE 4-YEAR OLD BLONDE, NAMED TAYLOR. PAY A VISIT TO THE DECKER NEXT TIME YOU COME TO MAQUOKETA AND STOP IN HERE AT KMAQ, RIGHT ACROSS THE STREET. THE COFFEE POT IS ALWAYS ON.
SOMEONE BROKE INTO BOB BRINKER'S RURAL MAQUOKETA HOME ON THE DARK HOLLOW ROAD LAST NIGHT. OVER A THOUSAND DOLLARS DAMAGE DONE TO A CURIO CABINET...EYE GLASSES...AND A DOOR.
WILL IT BE PEPSI OR COKE, EXCLUSIVELY, FOR MAQUOEKTA SCHOOLS. CURRENT COKE AGREEMENT HAS EXPIRED AND NOW...WHO TO GO WITH IN THE FUTURE. COKE IS OFFERING $7,000 UP FRONT IN CASH EACH YEAR, FOR A 5-YEAR CONTRACT. PEPSI SAID BECAUSE OF THEIR POPULAR MOUNTAIN DEW, POP SALES AND PROFIT FOR THE SCHOOL WILL DOUBLE. MILK MACHINE WAS TRIED AT ONE SCHOOL AND POOR SALES. NO DECISION MADE LAST NIGHT. THERE WAS A TIME WHEN RC COLA...WAS BOTTLED RIGHT HERE IN TOWN.
AMBER MANERS AND ROBERT SUTHERS OF LOST NATION ARE PARENTS OF A BOY BORN LAST SATURDAY AT THE LOCAL HOSPITAL. MATERNAL GRANDPARENT ISSHERYL MOUNTS OF MAQUOKETA. GREAT-GRANDFATHER IS LYLE SUTHERS OF MAQUOKETA.
DON "CATFISH" MEYERS, AGE 62, OF SABULA DIED MONDAY. REMINDS ME THAT MAQUOKETA HAD A MAN KNOWN TO ALL AS "CATFISH". REMEMBER HIS FULL NAME?
PRE-MATURE TWINS WERE BORN LAST WEEK TO SHAWN AND JENNIFER MEYER OF CRYSTAL LAKE, ILLINOIS, BUT BOTH DIED SHORTLY AFTER. A GIRL AND BOY. GRANDPARENTS ARE FRED AND IRMA MEYER OF MAQUOKETA. GREAT-GRANDMOTHER IS HELEN MEYER OF MAQUOKETA.
HAD LUNCH YESTERDAY WITH BOB OSTERHAUS. HE AND ANN WENT TO THE IOWA GAME AT MICHIGAN LAST SATURDAY...ALONG WITH OVER 110,000 OTHER FANS. IMAGINE THAT CROWD. TALKED TO DONA HEISTER TODAY (SHE WORKS AT BOTH OSTERHAUS PHARMACY AND OBIE'S TACOS, AND DOES A GREAT JOB AT BOTH)...AND THIS FRIDAY, LEAVES FOR THE BIG RACE AT TALLADEJA, ABOUT 30 MILES SOUTH OF ANNISTON, ALABAMA...THE MOST FAMOUS NASCAR TRACK IN THE COUNTRY. IT WILL BE HER 10TH YEAR IN A ROW TO GO TO THE BIG RACE. THERE WILL BE 9 IN HER PARTY...AND THEY WILL JOIN UP WITH 59 RACING FANS FROM BERNARD....ALL STAYING IN AN RV PARK RIGHT AT THE TRACK. AND...THERE WILL BE OVER 200,000 AT THE RACE. WOW.
I SAW THE TRACK ONCE, WHILE PASSING BY. SON RICK WAS STATIONED WITH THE MARINES DOWN THERE AND HE AND SHERI LIVED NEAR ANNISTON....GRANDDAUGHTER CASSIE WAS BORN DOWN THERE.
A COUPLE TIMES, RICK AND OTHER MARINES WORKED THE RACE....I THINK IT WAS IN SECURITY.
OR MAYBE THEY RAN A FOOD STAND. CAN'T REMEMER. SORRY TO REPORT, I'M NOT A RACE FAN.
BUT...AGAIN THIS YEAR, WAS A CO-SPONSOR OF A STOCK CAR AT THE LOCAL JACKSON COUNTY RACEWAY. IT WAS A HOBBY STOCK CAR #4 OWNED AND DRIVEN BY DAVE KOOB OF MAQUOKETA.. I DON'T THINK THE CAR DID VERY GOOD THIS YEAR.
THANKS FOR THE VISIT.

BEAUTIFUL DAY TODAY, HIGH OF 71. 31/100 OF AN INCH OF RAIN YESTERDAY.
IN THE SCHOOL BOARD ELECTION TUESDAY, TWO OF MAQUOKETA'S CURRENT SCHOOL BOARD MEMBERS, LESLIE LAWSON AND MARY BARTERS, BOTH WERE RE-ELECTED, UN-OPPOSED. LESLIE GOT 68 VOTES AND MARY 71.
THE CARSON AND BARNES CIRCUS IS COMING TO MAQUOKETA MONDAY FOR TWO PERFORMANCES...4:30 AND 7:30 AT THE FAIRGROUNDS. IT IS A VERY OLD CIRCUS AND THEY STILL USE ELEPHANTS TO RAISE THE BIG TENT.
THE BRAD DEERY COMMERCIAL I PUT ON THIS SITE YESTERDAY, WAS RECORDED TOO LOUD AND THEREFORE HARD TO UNDERSTAND...SORRY ABOUT THAT.
THE MAQUOKETA SCHOOL DISTRICT PURCHASED A HOUSE ACROSS THE STREET, SOUTH, OF THE MIDDLE SCHOOL, FOR $43,500, FROM DAVE BRADY. IT WILL BE DEMOLISHED, AND FENCING AND GRAVEL ADDED, AT A COST OF ABOUT $20,000. IT WILL PROVIDE 80 PARKING SPACES FOR THE SCHOOL, WHERE PARKING IS BADLY NEEDED, ESPECIALLY NOW THAT A FEW MORE SPACES WILL BE GONE AS THEY ARE BUILDING AN ADDITION TO THE SCHOOL FOR AN OFFICE. FUNDS FOR THE NEW PARKING LOT WILL COME FROM THE DISTRICT'S PHYSICAL AND EQUIPMENT LEVY. LATER ON, AT ANOTHER $20,000, THE LOT WILL BE PAVED. THAT MAY BE A YEAR OR MORE AWAY.
MAYOR TOM MESSERLI ANNOUNCED TODAY THAT HE HAS DECIDED ON THE NEW POLICE CHIEF. HE INTENDS TO APPOINT BRAD KORANDA TO THE POSITION AT NEXT MONDAY'S COUNCIL MEETING.
UNDER CITY CODE, THE MAYOR MAKES THE APPOINTMENT AND THE COUNCIL, WITH AT LEAST 4 VOTES, HAS TO RATIFIY THE DECISION. IF APPROVED MONDAY NIGHT BY THE COUNCIL, HE WOULD START IMMEDIATELY. HE HAS BEEN FULLTIME WITH THE DEPARTMENT SINCE 1988 AND WAS NAMED SERGEANT IN 1997. HE AND HIS WIFE, BECKY, HAVE TWO CHILDREN. ONE SON, BODE, IS A SENIOR AT MCHS AND A DAUGHTER, BROOKLYN IS A 7TH GRADER. HIS FATHER IS LONGTIME BUSINESSMAN, AND A FORMER POLICE OFFICER IN TOWN FOR MANY YEARS, ARNOLD KORANDA.
VANDALS KNOCKED OVER FOUR HEADSTONES THIS WEEK AT MT. HOPE CEMETERY.
TIM AND BECKY CHAPIN OF MAQUOKETA ARE PARENTS OF TWIN GIRLS BORN EARLIER THIS WEEK.
NO LOCAL DEATHS.
THANKS FOR THE VISIT.

NICE...AND WARM....DAY TODAY...HIGH IN 80'S. MORE OF THE SAME TOMORROW.
THE MAQUOKETA CARDINALS DEFEATED MONTICELLO HERE LAST NIGHT, 37 TO 6, FOR THEIR FIRST WIN OF SEASON...A NON-DISTRICT GAME.
IOWA DEFEATED IOWA STATE TODAY, 17 TO 10 IN A GOOD GAME AT IOWA CITY...A CLOSER GAME THAN WAS PREDICTED BY MOST.
HAPPY 90TH BIRTHDAY TODAY TO MARIAN MOELLER OF MAQUOKETA. SHE WAS BORN OUT ON A FARM.... ON A RAINING MORNING ON THE DARK HOLLOW ROAD AND STONY POINT AREA FIVE MILES SOUTHEAST OF ANDREW, THAT DR. S.M LITTLEFIELD OF ANDREW REACHED OVER DIRT MID ROADS WITH A HORSE AND BUGGY. SHE WAS AN INDUSTRIAL HEALTH NURSE FOR CLINTON ENGINES FOR 16 YEARS AND WORKED AT CRESTRIDGE NURSING HOME AS A REGISTERED NURSE FOR EIGHT YEARS.
THE RAGBRAO COMMITTEE MET THIS WEEK AND OFFICIALS WERE SURPRISED THIS WEEK WHEN THE DES MOINES REGISTER, SPONSOR OF RAGBRAI, DONATED $8,200 TO MAQUOKETA FOR HOSTING RAGBRAI IN LATE JULY. THE LOCAL COMMITTEE ALSO CAME UP WITH A LITTLE PROFIT FROM ACTIVITIES HERE..... AND THE COMMITTEE NOW PLANS TO DO SOME SORT OF COMMUNITY PROJECT THAT WOULD BENEFIT EVERYONE. NOTHING HAS YET BEEN DECIDED. THE LOCAL COMMITTEE, ESTIMATED EACH RAGBRAI VISITOR SPENT AT LEAST $20 WHILE IN MAQUOKETA, AND BELIEVES THAT THE RAGBRAI EVENT MENT AN ADDITIONAL $300,000 WAS SPENT IN MAQUOKETA THAT DAY, NIGHT AND NEXT MORNING. LOCAL CLUBS THAT SPONSORED FOOD STAND, FOR THE MOST PART, ALSO SHOWED A PROFIT FOR THEIR TREASURY. MANY RAN OUT OF FOOD THAT NIGHT. SO....THE GENERAL CONSENSUS...RAGBRAI WAS A BIG SUCCESS IN MANY WAYS, INCLUDING FINANCIALLY.
I STOPPED UP AT THE JACKSON COUNTY PUBLIC HOSPITAL NEW EXTENDED CARE WING YESTERDAY OVER THE NOON HOUR AND VISITED WITH TWO RESIDENTS THERE....GEORGE SPALDING, LONGTIME SHOE STORE OWNER IN MAQUOKETA AND LONGTIME DOCTOR, CLAY RISSER. GEORGE LOOKED GOOD AND IS RECOVERING FROM HIP SURGERY AND WE DISCUSSED FOOTBALL AND OTHER THINGS. DR. RISSER WAS IN A GOOD MOOD, ASKED FOR SOME MUSIC AND THEY PLAYED SOME CD MUSIC AND HE (AT 105) RAISED HIS ARMS AND HANDS TO ENCOURAGE AND DIRECT OTHERS IN ROOM IN SINGING ALONG WITH THE CD.
HE TALKS A LOT, BUT HIS HEARING IS NOT GOOD AND HE IS A LITTLE HARD TO UNDERSTAND. ALSO SAID HI TO BOTH MARIETTA RIPPLE AND DIXIE MILLER AS BOTH KNEW ME. I BELIEVE THERE 17 TO 19 ROOMS IN THAT NEW BUILDING AND IT IS VERY NICE. I THINK IT HAS ONE OPEN ROOM AT THE PRESENT TIME.
HAVE A NICE SUNDAY AND WEEK AHEAD.

AGAIN..SUPER DAY IN MAQUKETA..HIGH OF 76.
MAQUOKETA FIREMEN CALLED OUT THIS AFTERNOON TO EXTINGUISH A BEAN FIELD FIRE AT THE JIM SUTTON FARM OFF HIGHWAY61. ABOUT 4 ACRES BURNED. NOT SURE HOW IT GOT STARTED.
I ATTENDED THE RIBBON-CUTTING CEREMONY AT 3:45 THIS AFTERNOON AT A NEW MAQUOKETA BUSINESS....CHEM RIGHT LABORATORIES. IT IS LOCATED IN THE FORMER DR. BIEHL DENTIST BUILDING ON NORTH MAIN STREET. IT IS OWNED BY MR. AND MRS. DAVID GOSSMAN. THEY BOTH WORK NEAR DEKALB, ILLINOIS, BUT ALSO HAVE OWNED A 600 ACRE FARM NORTH OF MAQUOKETA FOR NEARLY 10 YEARS SO THEY ARE NO STRANGERS TO MAQUOKTA AREA AND HAVE SPENT LOTS OF TIME BETWEEN THEIR MAQUOKETA AND ILLINOIS HOMES. NOW, THIS NEW BUSINESS WILL DO BOTH WATER AND SOIL TESTING FOR EASTERN IOWA. DAVID AND HIS WIFE BOTH HAVE A BACKGROUND IN TESTING AND THEIR CHEMIST HERE IN MAQUOKETA IS CYNTHIA DYE OF BELLEVUE AND THEIR LABORATORY MANAGER IS DANIEL DARLAND, WHO LIVES IN DEWITT. QUITE A LAYOUT. THEY HAVE LOTS OF EQUIPMENT, FILLING THAT BUILDING FROM THE FRONT DOOR TO THE BACK DOOR. BEST OF LUCK TO T HEM IN THEIR NEW BUSINESS.
TURNS OUT, THE ONE-HOUR POWER FAILURE YESERDAY MORNING, WAS RIGHT NEAR THE POWER PLANT ON NORTH MAIN STREET. CREWS DISCOVERED A FRIED BIRD...YES BIRD... IN THE REGULATOR NEAR THE PLANT.
THAT LITTLE CRITTER CAUSED THE ONE-HOUR POWER FAILURE.
IN MAGISTRATE COURT....JOSEPH MAXWELL, 31, OF MAQUOKETA, WAS CHARGED WITH OWI, AND POSSESSION OF A CONTROLLED SUBSTANCE, MARIJUANA, AND POSSESSION OF DRUG PARAPHENALIA WHEN STOPPED BY POLICE JUST BEFORE MIDNIGHT LAST NIGHT.
THAT'S IT FOR ANOTHER DAY. TAKE IT EASY.

TODAY, FOR THE 2ND DAY IN A ROW..SUNNY AND WARM, A HIGH OF 87, LIKE YESTERDAY.
NICE WEATHER FORECAST FOR TOMORROW WITH RAIN POSSIBLE SUNDAY.
NO MAQUOKETA FOOTBALL GAME TONIGHT...THEIR NEXT GAME IN A WEEK.
THE GRANDSON OF DON AND THELMA DAVIS OF MAQUOKETA , AND HIS WIFE, WERE MURDERED IN A CONVENIENCE STORE IN ANNISTON, ALABAMA, JUST AFTER 10 LAST NIGHT. BOTH JOSHUA DAVIS, AGE 24, AND HIS WIFE, LINDA MICHELLE, AGE 34, WERE EMPLOYEES AND WERE FOUND SHOT TO DEATH BEHIND THE COUNTER OF THE STORE. JOSHUA IS THE SON OF DAVID DAVIS OF TORNOTO, IOWA AND WAS A GRADUATE OF CALAMUS-WHEATLAND HIGH SCHOOL. THE DAUGHTER OF LINDA, JORDON NICHOLE TODARO, AGE 14, WAS KIDNAPPED BY THE ALLEDGED KILLER, GEORGE HONEA, AGE 34, OF ANNISTON. 87 TODAY...
LOIS SCHEPERS OF LOST NATION, MCHS GRAD, AND DAUGHTER OF FAY MOELLER OF MAQUOKETA, CALLED ME THIS MORNING TO TELL ME HER BROTHER, DICK MOELLER, LIVES DOWN IN FLORIDA WHERE THE HURRICANE WARNING IS IN EFFECT AND THEREFORE LEFT THE AREA NEAR PALM BEACH AND WENT TO HIS SON'S HOME IN VIRGINIA UNTIL THE STORM IS OVER. FAY, BY THE WAY, WILL BE 95 IN NOVEMBER. STILL PLAYS PIANO AND SINGS ONCE A MONTH FOR THE CRESTRIDGE NURSING HOME RESIDENTS.
THE CLASS OF 1959 IS HAVING A BIG RE-UNION (45TH) THIS WEEKEND. FRIDAY, SATURDAY AND SUNDAY, INCLUDING A TOUR OF THEIR HIGH SCHOOL, NOW THE MIDDLE SCHOOL. I KNEW QUITE A FEW FROM THAT CLASS, BECAUSE THEY STARTED THEIR SENIOR YEAR IN 1958 JUST AFTER KMAQ WENT ON THE AIR.
I ATE MANY OF MY MEALS AT THE GREEN MILL IN THOSE DAYS AND A LOT OF THOSE SENIORS STOPPED AT THE GREEN MILL AFTER SCHOOL OR AFTER A MOVIE AT THE PASTIME THEATRE. GEORGE PETAROS WOULD FIX A BUNCH OF COKES AND CHERRY COKES AHEAD OF TIME, SO WHEN THE KIDS CAME IN AFTER SCHOOL, THERE WAS NOT WAITING.
VERY LITTLE MAQUOKETA NEWS TODAY, AND NO DEATHS.
SHORT REPORT...BUT BETTER THAN NONE??
THANKS FOR CHECKING IN.
