SUNDAY DAILY

ONE OF THE "BRIDGES OF MADISON COUNTY"?    NO!   THE FIRST AND ONLY
COVERED BRIDGE IN JACKSON COUNTY, A NEW JACKSON COUNTY TOURISM
ATTRACTION.   DENNIS AND JEANIE ALTHAUS BUILDT IT ON THEIR PROPERTY
2 MILES NORTH OF ST. DONATUS.   YOU CAN SEE IT FROM HIGHWAY 52.
LAST APRIL, THE LANE TO THEIR HOUSE WAS AGAIN COVERED BY 3 FEET OF
FLOODING LUX CREEK.    THEY DECIDED TO BUILD A BRIDGE SO THEY
WOULD NEVER  AGAIN HAVE THIS PROBLEM AND DECIDED TO GO THE EXTRA MILE AND MAKE IT A COVERED BRIDGE.   IT IS 68 FEET LONG,  19 FEET
WIDE AND 12 FEET HIGH AND SITS ATOP CONCRETE PIERS WHICH GO DOWN TO THE BEDROCK.   THE BRIDGE IS MADE OF TWO FLATBED RAILROAD
CARS WELDED TOGETHER.   EACH RAILROAD CAR COST $17,000 AND THE
REST OF BRIDGE IS MADE OF TREATED WHITE PINE    DENNIS DID  A LOT OF THE WORK AND MOST OF THE PLANNING, WITH SOME IDEAS FROM IIW
ENGINEERS.    THIS SPRING, DENNIS PLANS TO ADD A LARGE ENTRANCE
GATE OFF HIGHWAY 52 THAT WILL READ "ANTLER RIDGE" PAYING  HOMAGE
TO HIS HOBBY OF PHOTOGRAPHING WILD LIFE AND DEER.       DENNIS AND JEANIE ARE SEMI-RETIRED, AND STILL CO-OWN FAMILY BEER AND LIQUOR
AT EAST DUBUQUE WITH THEIR SON TIM.    THEY WILL CELEBRATE THEIR 50 ANNIVERSARY NEXT YEAR.
THINK OF THE HUNDREDS OF CITIZENS AND TOURISTS THAT WILL STOP
BY TO LOOK AT THE COVERED BRIDGE AND HAVE THIER PHOTO TAKEN
ON IT.    A GIFT SHOP IN THE FUTURE?     YES...ANOTHER TOURIST ATTRACTION FOR JACKSON COUNTY.     MAYBE THE PEACE PIPE PLAYERS WILL PRODUCE A NEW PLAY, "THE COVERED BRIDGE OF JACKSON COUNTY".
