ANOTHER NICE DAY IN IOWA!
A JACKSON COUNTY JURY THIS AFTERNOON FOUND THE MILWAUKEE MAN, JASON BROWN, AGE 31, GUILTY OF ROBBERY IN THE FIRST DEGREE FOR HIS INVOLVMENT IN THE ROBBERY OF THE ANDREW BRANCH OF THE MAQUOKETA STATE BANK. THE JURY CAME BACK AT 1:30 P.M. AFTER RECEIVING THE CASE AT NOON. LUNCH WAS SERVED AT THAT TIME AND IT IS NOT KNOWN IF THEY DELIBERATED DURING THEIR LUNCH
TIME. THE JUDGE SAID BROWN WILL BE SENTENCED AT 9 A.M. ON SEPTEMBER 16TH.
PROSECUTORS SAY THE ROBBERY IN THE FIRST DEGREE IS A FORCEBLE FELONY WITH A MANDATORY 25 YEAR SENTENCE AND THAT BROWN WILL BE REQUIRED TO SERVE 70%
OF THE TIME, OR OVER 17 YEARS. THERE WILL BE NO BAIL. BROWN HAS BEEN HELD IN THE JACKSON COUNTY JAIL ALMOST A YEAR AND WILL REMAIN THERE UNTIL THE SENTENCING. THERE WAS ANOTHER MAN WHO WENT INTO THE BANK WITH
BROWN LAST SEPTEMBER AND THE STATE PROSECUTOR SAID THE INVESTIGATION
OF THE BANK ROBBERY WILL CONTINUE.
THE MAQUOKETA CITY COUNCIL THIS WEEK ASKED ENGINEERS TO DRAW UP PLANS
TO PAVE 17TH STREET AND MATTESON STREET. THE COUNCIL DID NOT SAY HOW THEY WILL PAY FOR THE WORK. THE ONE STREET, 17TH, IS THE ONE BEHIND WAL MART
THAT LEADS INTO THE PRAIRIE CREEK GOLF COURSE SUBDIVISION. THAT WILL BE NICE TO HAVE THAT PAVED. KIND OF BAD NOW THAT THERE IS A GRAVEL ROAD
CONNECTING THE CITY WITH A SUBDIVISION AND GOLF COURSE.
TWO VEHICLES COLLIDED AT MAIN AND APPLE AT 6:40 MONDAY NIGHT. NO INJURIES.
ONE DRIVER, MARISSA TILL, AGE 15, OF MAQUOKETA, WAS CHARGED WITH STOP SIGN VIOLATION. THE OHTER DRIVER, ROBERT CLARK, AGE 46, OF MAQUOKETA, WAS DRIVING SOUTH ON MAIN AND TILL WAS AT THE INTERSECTION WITH APPLE. SHE
PULLED OUT ONTO MAIN AND HIT THE CLARK VEHICLE. $2,000 IN DAMAGES TO TILL'S 2004 JEEP AND $4,000 DAMAGE TO CLARK'S 95 LINCOLN.
MAQUOKETA WILL HAVE A NEW BARBER SHOP, STARTING AUGUST 23RD, IN THE SAME PLACE THAT THE LATE BARBER, SHIFTY DAVIS WAS LOCATED FOR MANY YEARS....AT 101 E. PLATT STREET. OWNER WILL BE SHANNON BURNS AND IT WILL BE KNOWN AS SHANNON'S BARBER SHOP. MAQUOKETA YEARS AGO HAD MANY BARBERS.
NOW, WE HAVE BOB'S ON SOUTH MAIN, DAN'S ON NORTH MAIN, BILL'S ON WEST
PLATT, AND A COUPLE BEAUTY SHOPS ALSO GIVE MEN'S HAIRCUTS. BILL'S
(BILL MERRICK)IS OPEN SOME EARLY MORNINGS ONLY AND GIVES FEW HAIRCUTS ANYMORE. HE HAS BEEN AT HIS SHOP SINCE 1952.
MAQUOKETA OPENS THE FOOTBALL SEASON ON FRIDAY NIGHT, AUGUST 26TH, AT
MANCHESTER, AGAINST WEST DELAWARE. MATT CLARK, WHO NOW LIVES IN
CEDAR RAPIDS, WILL BE DOING PLAY-BY-PLAY OF THE GAMES AGAIN THIS YEAR
ON KMAQ-FM AND OUR WEB SITE.
DAVE JOHNSON...HAPPY 72ND. STILL MAKING LOANS TWO DAYS A WEEK AT
THE MAQUOKETA STATE BANK. AND HE'S STILL QUIET AND SHY AS ALWAYS.
CHECK THE PHOTOS BELOW THAT I TOOK YESTERDAY AT THE IOWA STATE FAIR.

YESTERDAY, NANCY AND I ESCORTED THE KMAQ TRAVEL BUS TO THE STATE FAIR
IN DES MOINES. LEFT THE FAIRGROUNDS AT 7:30 A.M. AND WE WERE BACK JUST
AFTER 8:30 LAST NIGHT. GOOD WEATHER. BIG CROWDS. ALL 46 OF US HAD
A GOOD TIME. RED HENTON HEADED FOR THE HORSESHOE PITCHING AREA AND
DEMONSTRATED HIS SKILL TO ONLOOKERS. WE SAW THE FAMOUS BUTTER COW.
WENT PAST THE PUMPKIN PATCH. VISITED CONNIE TJARKS AT HER "KNOT ENOUGH
TYME" BOOTH WHERE FRIEND MARILYN WILLEY WAS HELPING HER FOR A COUPLE DAYS.
CONNIE (RURAL MAQUOKETA AND ROTARY PRESIDENT) IS COMMITTED TO BEING AT
HER BOOTH FROM 9 AM UNTIL 9 PM EVERY DAY OF THE FAIR. THANKS TO EVERYONE WHO WENT ON THE KMAQ TRIP. THAT'S THE WAY TO GO! THE BUS TOOK US RIGHT
DOWN TO THE MAIN AREA OF THE FAIR AND PICKED US UP THERE TOO. NO WALKING
FROM THE PARKING LOTS A LONG WAY AWAY. DURING THE FIVE HOURS ON THE FAIRGROUNDS, LOTS OF WALKING AND LOTS OF FOOD!
NEEDLESS TO SAY....SLEPT WELL LAST NIGHT!
