YESTERDAY, AT THE ANNUAL JERSERY AUCTION KICKING OFF THE HOMECOMING WEEK ACTIVITIES, THE STUDENT BODY ELECTION RESULTS WERE ANNOUNCED: KEEGAN CLEARY IS THE HOMECOMING KING AND MICHELLE EBERHART, HOMECOMING QUEEN.
A MAQUOKETA MAN WAS JAILED AND FACES TWO CHARGES AFTER A MINOR HIT AND RUN
ACCIDENT IN THE MAQUOKETA WALMART PARKING LOT FRIDAY MORNING. DENNIS DURKOP, AGE 53, BACKED INTO A BMW OWNED BY A WOMAN FROM WHEATLAND. DURKOP GOT OUT OF HIS CAR AND BEGAN YELLING AT HER AND SAID HE HAD NO INSURANCE AND HAD DIPLOMATIC IMMUNITY AND LEFT THE SCENE. HE THEN RETURNED AND BEGAN YELLING AT POLICE OFFICER JT THOMSON. HE REFUSED TO GIVE THE OFFICER HIS DRIVERS LICENSE, INSURANCE CARD OR ANY INFORMATION ABOUT HIMSELF. THE OFFICER SAID DURKOP KEPT YELLING HE HAD DIPLOMATIC IMMUNITY. DURKOP WAS ARRESTED AND CHARGED WITH HARASSMENT OF A PUBLIC OFFICIAL, NO INSURANCE AND DISORDERLY CONDUCT. THE JUDGE RELEASED HIM FROM JAIL FRIDAY AFTERNOON.
CITY COUNCIL MEETING TONIGHT.
DR. FREDERICK SWIFT, 92, OF GAINSVILLE, FLORIDA, AND FORMERLY OF MAQUOKETA,
DEID LAST MONDAY AT HAVEN HOSPICE IN GAINSVILLE. HE WAS A FAMILY PRACTITIONER AND SURGEON IN MAQUOKETA FOR MANY YEARS, STARTING IN 1947, AND DELIVERED MORE THAN 5,000 BABIES. IN 1970 HE MOVED TO FLORIDA AND JOINED THE STAFF OF A VETERANS HOSPITAL.
HE DONATED PART OF A FARM TO MAQUOKETA FOR THE MAQUOKETA AIRPORT. SURIVIVORS
INCLUDE HIS WIFE OF 66 YEARS, LOUISE, A DAUGHTER AND A SON AND ONE GRANDCHILD.
ALSO A SISTER, REGINA SAGERS OF MAQUOKETA. THE FUNERAL WILL BE THIS THURSDAY
AT GAINSVILLE AND THE WILLIAMS-THOMAS FUNERAL HOME IN GAINESVILLE IS IN CHARGE OF ARRANGEMENTS.
