THE JACKSON COUNTY SUPERVISORS APPROVED PAYING HILLCREST FAMILY SERVICES $11,322 FOR START UP COSTS FOR THE MENTAL HEALTH PROGRAM IN JACKSON COUNTY. HILLCREST TOOK OVER FOR THE GANNON CENTER EARLIER THIS YEAR. THE START UP COSTS INCLUDED DESKS, COMPUTERS AND EQUIPMENT.

SIX PEOPLE HAVE INDICATED THEY WOULD BE INTERESTED IN THE AT LARGE POSITION ON THE MAQUOKETA COMMUNITY SCHOOL BOARD.
LESLIE LAWSON RESIGNED EARLIER THIS MONTH AFTR FIVE YEARS ON THE BOARD. IT IS TOO LATE TO PUT SOMEONE'S NAME ON THE SEPTEMBER 12TH SCHOOL ELECTION BALLOT. THE LAW REQUIRES THE BOARD TO APPOINT SOMEONE TO FILL OUT LAWSON'S TERM THAT ENDS NEXT YEAR. THOSE WHO HAVE PUT THEIR NAME IN FOR THE POSITION:
MARTY HUDLIK...DEE MCCUTCHEON...WILLIAM MCCLINTOCK...PAULA RIVER...DARYL SCHEPERS...AND TROY THEDE. BOARD MEMBERS SAID THEY WILL INTERVIEW THE SIX CANDIDATES DURING A SPECIAL MEETING AT 5:30 P.M. TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 5TH AT THE DISTRICT OFFICE.
JACKSON COUNTY SHERIFF RUSS KETTMANN AND A DEPUTY TOOK A HORSE TRAILER AND CRATE TO NEAR DULUTH TODAY TO PICK-UP THE COUGARS SEIZED IN JULY FROM THE RURAL MAQUOKETA HOME OF PAM AND RANDY GARIEN. THE THREE WERE TAKEN FROM THE GARIENS AND HAVE NOT BEEN RETURNED AS REQUIRED BY A COURT SETTLEMENT EARLIER THIS MONTH. THE GARIEN'S ATTORNY IS THREATENING TO FILE A CONTEMPT OF COURT CHARGE IF THE COUGARS ARE NOT RETURNEDD THIS WEEK.
THE COUGARS HAVE BEEN AT A WILDCAT SANCTUARY LOCATED NEAR DULUTH AND THE SANCTUARY HAS LISTED SPECIFICATIONS THAT MUST BE MET BEFORE THE ANIMALS WILL BE RELEASED. A LICENSED VET MUST ADMINISTER A SEDATIVE TO LOAD THE ANIMALS. AND THEY WILL NOT BE RELEASED UNTIL THE SANCTUARY GETS A CHECK FOR $2,849.25 FOR THE CURRENT CARE UP TO DATE, AT $90 A DAY.
