THE DOWNTOWN MAIN STREET CAFE WILL BE MOVING TO THE FORMER FLAPJACK
RESTAURANT, THAT HAS BEEN CLOSED FOR MONTH.
THE NEW HOSPITAL IN MAQUOKETA GOING UP ON THE HILL SOUTH OF WALMART.
PROJECTED OPENING....LATE NEXT YEAR.
A 1947 PHOTO OF THE FORMER PASTIME THEATRE IN MAQUOKETA, WHERE SMILES ON MAIN IS LOCATED NOW. IT MADE WAY FOR A NEW STORE IN 1973. BANK DAY WAS VERY POPULAR. IT WAS UP TO $500 WHEN THIS PHOTO WAS TAKEN. THAT WAS A LOT OF MONEY IN 1947.
THE WINNER HAD TO BE PRESENT TO WIN. I OWNED AND RAN IT FOR THE FINAL 3-MONTHS, IN NOVEMBER AND DECEMBER IN 1972 AND JANUARY OF 1973.
THE NEW VOY THEATRE OPENED IN MARCH OF 1973, SO MAQUOKETA DID NOT
HAVE A THEATRE FOR ABOUT 6 WEEKS IN 1973. I HAVE A COUPLE THE PASTIME
SEATS IN THE KMAQ BASEMENT. THE PROJECTIONIST WAS HOWARD BRINKER.
FOR 40 YEARS. THE ONLY JOB IN HIS LIFE. I HAVE HIS TABLE TOP RADIO IN MY
KMAQ OFFICE AND IT STILL WORKS.
