MONDAY, THEY WILL PLAY AT 11:30 A.M. AGAINST KINGSLEY-PIERSON. A PEP RALLY WAS HELD SUNDAY MORNING IN THEIR GYM AT BELLEVUE. A BIG TURN
OUT TO SEND THEM OFF TO DES MOINES.

MAQUOKETA SCHOOLS, MAQUOKETA FAMOUS PEOPLE AND CLINTON ENGINES.

SHE TOLD THE HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS HOW IT WAS RE-BUILDT AFTER THE FIRE IN SAME LOCATION AND THAT THE THIRD FLOOR FOR A FEW YEARS, WAS THE LOCATION OF MAQUOKETA'S JUNIOR COLLEGE THAT STAYED OPEN
UNTIL WORLD WAR 2 WHICH CALLED MANY POSSIBLE STUDENTS TO WAR.
SHE SHOWED THIS PHOTO OF THE CHURCH ON EAST PLATT THAT IS STILL
USED TODAY, MINUS ONE OF THE TWO ENTRANCES, AND THAT A REV.
MILLIKAN WAS THE PASTOR. AND HIS SON, WHO CAME TO MAQUOKETA
AS A CHILD, GRADUATED FROM MAQUOKETA HIGH SCHOOL AND BECAME
A VERY FAMOUS PHYSICIST.
THERE WAS EVEN A U.S. POSTAGE STAMP HONORING MILLIKAN.

AND A FRIEND OF MINE. THE LATE DR. HEPKER WAS A MEMBER OF THE JACKSON COUNTY HISTORICAL SOCIETY WHERE WE WORKED ON PROJECTS
TOGETHER AND STARTED THE JACKSON COUNTY HISTORICAL SOCIETY
HALL OF FAME. HE SON OWNS THE BODY SHOP ON SOUTH MAIN STREET.
BONNIE ALSO TOLD THE HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS ABOUT CLINTON ENGINES.
THE COMPANY MOVED TO MAQUOKETA (A NON-UNION TOWN THEN) IN 1950 FROM CLINTON, MICHIGAN. IT BECAME ONE OF THE TOP TEN EMPLOYEE
COMPANIES IN IOWA. WHEN NECESSARY, WORKED 3 SHIFTS A DAY,
SOMETIMES EVEN ON SUNDAY. OWNER DON THOMAS SOLD PLANT AND
AFTER NEW OWNERSHIP BY AN EASTERN COMPANY, CLOSED IN THE MID 60'S. OVER THE YEARS, OVER 18 MILLION ENGINES WERE MADE IN
MAQUOKETA.
