THE WARTBURG COLLEGE 4 BY 400 METER RELAY TEAM HAS BEEN NAMED THE IOWA CONFERENCE TRACK PERFORMERS OF THE WEEK AND MAQUOKETA HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATE AUBREE TAYLOR, A SOPHOMORE,
IS A MEMBER OF THAT TEAM.
FIRE THIS MORNING DID EXTENSIVE DAMAGE TO A MAQUOKETA HOME,
AT 400 BUTTERNUT. IT STARTED IN THE KITCHEN AND A MAN AND
WOMAN WHO WERE NOT IDENTIFIED WERE IN THE HOME AT THE TIME.
THE RENTERS SAID THEY WERE COOKING OIL IN A PAN ON THE STOVE WHEN IT CAUGHT FIRE AND SPREAD THROUGH THE KITCHEN. EXTENSIVE
DAMAGE WAS DONE. THE HOME IS INHABITABLE AND THE AMERICAN RED CROSS WAS CALLED IN TO ASSIST THE FAMILY. NO ONE INJURED.
THERE WERE NO WORKING SMOKE DETECTORS IN THE RENTED HOME.
THE MAQUOKETA HOSPITAL BOARD MET YESTERDAY AND HAD A PUBLIC
HEARING ON THE PROPOSED TAX LEVY FOR THE FISCAL YEAR 2017.
TEH LEVY IS 1.041 PER $1,000 ASSESSED VALUATION AND WILL GENERATE
$1,032,062, DOWN FROM LAST YEAR'S LEVY OF 1.056. NO ONE SPOKE
AT THE PUBLIC HEARING AND THE BOARD APPROVED THE LEVY.
