IT WAS A COLD WEEKEND, BUT NOT AS COLD AS FORECAST. SATURDAY NIGHT WE DID NOT GET DOWN TO 10 BELOW, ONLY 0. BUT, LOOKS LIKE
8 OR 9 BELOW THIS WEDNESDAY AND THURSDAY NIGHT. A COLD WEEK
AHEAD, BUT WARMER WEATHER NEXT WEEK. GOOD NEWS, LITTLE OR NO
SNOW IN FORECAST. WE HAD SUNSHINE THIS MORNING, BUT CLOUDS ARRIVED AND STAYED.... AND HIGH TODAY IN THE UPPER TEENS.
LOGAN MAYBERRY, A SENIOR AT MCHS, WILL BE IN THE STATE WRESTLING
TOURNAMENT THIS WEEK, AT 152 POUNDS IN CLASS 3-A. LOGAN CAME THROUGH WITH A SECOND PLACE FINISH IN THE DISTRICT SATURDAY AT CEDAR RAPIDS PRAIRIE HIGH SCHOOL. HE IS THE SON OF JIM AND SUE MAYBERRY OF RURAL MAQUOKETA AND OWNERS OF MAYBERRY APPLIANCES IN DOWNTOWN MAQUOKETA. THERE HAS BEEN A LONG STRING OF GOOD MAYBERRY WRESTLERS FOR MANY YEARS AT MAQUOKETA HIGH SCHOOL.
MAQUOKETA DID NOT HAVE A STATE QUALIFIER THE LAST THREE YEARS.
ALSO FROM THIS AREA GOING TO STATE, A WRESTLER FROM BELLEVUE, DEWITT, AND TWO FROM NORTH CEDAR.
SINCE DR. PAUL KOOB IS NOW THE WRESTLING COACH FOR MAQUOKETA,
FOR THE FIRST YEAR YEAR IN A LONG TIME, HE WILL NOT BE BROADCASTING THE HOLD-BY-HOLD ACTION ON KMAQ THIS YEAR.
WE WILL BE COVERING THE TOURNAMENT THOUGH, WITH DAY TO DAY
RESULTS FROM WELLS-FARGO ARENA.
AND FRIDAY NIGHT, THE MAQUOKETA BOYS BASKETBALL TEAM WON THEIR 4TH STRAIGHT GAME DEFEATING INDEPENDENCE IN A ROAD ROAD GAME,
59 TO 36. THEY FINISH THE REGULAR SEASON TOMORROW NIGHT AT HOME AGAINST CENTER POINT URBANA.
THEN TOURNAMENT PLAY BEGINS FOR THE CARDINAL GIRLS AND BOYS

A ROBBERY IN MAQUOKETA LAST NIGHT. JEREMY NEDERMAN REPORTED
AT 504 ROSEMERE LANE, APARTMENT 4, THAT RESIDENTS THERE WERE BURGLARIZED AND ASSAULTED IN THE APARTMENT. WHEN POLICE ARRIVED, THEY NOTICED ONE OF THE RESIDENTS HAD TEETH KNOCKED OUT AND THE 3-YEAR-OLD SON WAS PRESENT DURING THE BURGLARY. THE
RESIDENTS REFUSED MEDICAL TREATMENT AND THE SUSPECTS FLED THE SCENE AFTER STEALING A PLAY STATION 4. THE INVESTIGATION CONTINUES BY THE MAQUOKETA POLICE DEPARTMENT.
THE MAQUOKETA CITY COUNCIL MEETS TONIGHT AT 7.
A LONGTIME EMPLOYEE OF KMAQ DIED SATURDAY. EARL SAUNDERS DIED AT HIS RURAL MAQUOKETA HOME, AT THE AGE OF 92. HE WORKED FOR
25 YEARS IN THE KMAQ ADVERTISING SALES DEPARTMENT, CALLING ON
BUSINESS PLACES IN MAQUOKETA AND IN MOST SURROUNDING COMMUNITIES. HE SOLD THE COMMERCIALS, AND WROTE THEM FOR A KMAQ ANNOUNCER TO TAPE RECORD. AND HE WAS A GOOD SALESMAN, SETTING GOALS AND MOST OF THE TIME REACHING THOSE. WHENEVER
IT WAS A BUSY TIME AT KMAQ, WITH LOTS OF ADVERTISING FOR A SPECIAL
EVENT, (LIKE RIDICULOUS DAY OR A COUNTY FAIR) THOUGH THE LOG WAS ALREADY HEAVY WITH SPOTS, EARL, WITH A SMILE, WOULD SAY "THERE IS ALWAYS ROOM FOR ONE MORE COMMERCIAL". HE LIKED SELLING! AND EVERYONE AT KMAQ LIKED EARL! I LAST TALKED TO HIM IN EARLY DECEMBER AND HE WAS DOING WELL. THE PHOTO BELOW IS ONE OF QUITE A FEW YEARS AGO AT A KMAQ PARTY, SEATED AT LEFT
WITH HIS LATE WIFE EVA, WHO WAS A LONGTIME MAQUOKETA TEACHER.
THE FUNERAL FOR EARL WILL BE THURSDAY AT THE METHODIST CHURCH. THE COMPLETE OBITUARY IS AT carsonandson.com WEB SITE.
HAVE A GOOD WEEK. BUTTON UP YOUR COAT.
