 YES..THERE IS AN ELEPHANT AT THE FAIR....TWO....THROUGH SATURDAY.

YESTERDAY, A ONE-HOUR, FIFTY-MINUTE PARADE.
THEN A GOOD YOUTH RODEO AFTER....FULL MAIN GRANDSTAND.
OVER 3,000 IN ATTENDANCE....A GOOD NIGHT.
TOMORROW....
AN ACCIDENT MONDAY AFTERNOON SENT TWO TO THE HOSPITAL
HERE.    ZADE HAFERBIER, AGE 16, OF MAQUOKETA, WAS GOING SOUTH
ON 100TH STREET,  WAS NEGOTIATING A CURVE, LOST CONTROL AND OVERCORRECTED AND ENTERED THE EAST DITCH, ROLLING AND CAR
CAME TO REST ON IT'S TOP.     FIVE IN THE CAR.    TWO WERE TAKEN TO
THE HOSPITAL FOR NON LIFE THREATENING INJURIES.    TAKEN TO
HOSPITAL, MITCHELL BRENNEN, AGE 15, OF MAQUOKETA AND ZACHARY WELLS, AGE 18, OF MAQUOKETA.    $5,000 DAMAGES TO THE HAFERBIER
2000 CHEVY.

WEDNESDAY DAILY REPORT

HOT AND A LITTLE HUMID TODAY....82 THE HIGH.
GOOD WEATHER FOR THE FAIR IN TOWN THROUGH SUNDAY.
MID 80 WEATHER FORECAST EACH DAY.

THE LATEST UNEMPLOYMENT FIGURES SHOW THAT JACKSON COUNTY
HAS A RATE OF 3.8 PERCENT, ALMOST THE SAME AS IN MAY.
IN JUNE OF LAST YEAR, IT WAS 4.7.

THREE NEW DIRECTORS WERE ELECTED TO THE JACKSON COUNTY
HISTORICAL SOCIETY BOARD, AT THE ANNUAL MEETING HELD RECENTLY
AT THE FAIRGROUNDS IN MAQUOKETA.      THEY WERE ELECTED TO
A 3-YEAR TERM.    THEY ARE:   HAROLD LUBBEN OF MAQUOKETA,
RICH EPICH OF SABULA AND PEGGY McMURRAY OF RURAL MAQUOKETA.
AND RE-ELECTED TO THE BOARD,  VYE YEAGER OF MAQUOKETA.

JUDY SCHMIDT, AN EMT-B AT THE HOSPITAL IN MAQUOKETA WAS RECOGNIZED WITH A SAFETY HERO AWARD AT THE TUESDAY EVENING
HOSPITAL BOARD MEETING.   SHE WAS SIGHTED FOR HER EFFORTS IN RESPONDING TO A RECENT 9-1-1 CALLL FOR A POTENTIAL CODE BLUE.
SCHMIDT WAS NOT ON DUTY AND WAS NOT ON CALL, BUT SHE RESPONDED
FROM HER HOME AND ASSISTED IN THE CASE.    THE HERO AWARD IS PRESENTED QUARTERLY TO A WORTHY HOSPITAL EMPLOYEE.


WHEN AT THE FAIR...VISIT THE MUSEUM...ONLY $1 ADMISSION DURING
THE FAIR.


THIS BIG DOUBE FEATURE STARTS FRIDAY NIGHT AT THE 61 DRIVE-IN THEATRE 
SOUTH OF MAQUOKETA.....
FRI AND SAT AND SUN...BOXOFFICE OPENS AT 6:30
....WEEKNIGHTS, 7:30 P.M. 

BRAD DEERY WAS ELECTED VICE-CHAIRMAN OF THE IOWA AUTOMOBILE DEALERS ASSOCIATION AT
IT'S ANNUAL MEETING.     THE ASSOCIATION REPRESENTS MORE THAN 300 CAR AND TRUCK DEALERS IN THE STATE.    BRAD OWNS BRAD 
DEERY MOTORS IN MAQUOKETA AND WEST
BURLINGTON AND LIVES IN WEST BURLINGTON.

RAIN THIS MORNING...HOT AND HUMID THIS AFTERNOON...HIGH OF 85.

LOOKS LIKE THE WEATHER WILL BE GREAT FOR THE JACKSON COUNTY FAIR PARADE!
IT WILL START WEDNESDAY AT THE MIDDLE SCHOOL AND PROCEED NORTH TO QUARRY
STREET AND THEN EAST TO THE FAIRGROUNDS,
BUT WILL NOT GO ON TO THE GROUNDS.    FOR
THOSE UNABLE TO WATCH, LISTEN TO A DESCRIPTION OF THE PARADE BY LEIGHTON AND I
ON AM, FM AND ON OUR WEB SITE  HOME PAGE.

THE JACKSON COUNTY REGIONAL HEALTH'S MAIN ENTRANCE VISITOR AND
PARKING LOT, LOCATED OFF GROVE STREET IN MAQUOKETA WILL BE UNDER
CONSTRUCTION BEGINNING WEDNESDAY.    EVERY EFFORT WILL BE MADE TO MINIMIZE INCONVENIENCE TO PATIENTS AND VISITORS, BUT PARKING SPACES WILL BE LIMITED DURING THIS PROCESS.    IT IS ANTICIPATED THE PROJECT WILL BE COMPLETED BY NEXT MONDAY.    DETOUR SIGNS WILL BE POSTED IN AN EFFORT TO MINIMIZE THE CONFUSION.    THE EMERGENCY
ROOM ENTRANCE WILL NOT BE AFFECTED BY THE CONSTRUCTION.

MAQUOKETA POLICE OFFICER MATT OWENS INVESTIGATED A 2 CAR
ACCIDENT INVOLVING ERIN STREETER, AGE 30, OF MAQUOKETA AND
DOUGLAS COOK, AGE 53, OF MALTA, ILLINOIS.      STREETER MADE A LEFT
TURN OFF EHLERS LANE ONTO PLATT INTO THE PATH OF COOK CAUSING
COOK TO  HIT STREETER.    $8,000 DAMAGE TO STREETER'S 2006 CHEVY AND $3,500 DAMAGE TO COOK'S 2002 FORD.   NO INJURIES AND STREETER WAS
CITED FOR FAILURE TO OBEY A STOP SIGN.

LATE THURSDAY AFERNOON IS THE DEADLINE FOR FILING PAPERS TO
RUN FOR SCHOOL BOARDS.    IN MAQUOKETA, THERE ARE 3 OPENINGS ON THE SCHOOL BOARD ELECTION BALLOT THIS SEPTEMBER 8TH.   DEB 
LANE HAS INDICATED SHE WILL NOT RUN.      BOTH MICHAEL HAYWARD AND
DAVID SYBESMA SAY THEY WILL RUN FOR RE-ELECTION.   
STILL TIME TO TAKE OUT PAPERS AND RUN.     IF ELECTED, IT WOULD BE
AN INTERESTING FOUR YEARS.

A FORMER MAQUOKETA RESIDENT, WAYNE LITTELL, AGE 89, DIED SUNDAY
AT GENESIS EAST IN DAVENPORT.    HE HAS LIVED OVER 50 YEARS AT
ELDRIDGE.    IN 1967 AND 68, HE WAS A PART TIME ANNOUNCER AT KMAQ.
HE ALSO PLAYED PIANO ACCORDIAN AND HAD HIS OWN BAND THAT PLAYED
IN THE AREA, ESPECIALLY IN NURSING HOMES.     HE HAD A 52-YEAR 
PERIOD OF NOT MISSING A LIONS CLUB MEETING.    HE IS SURVIVED BY
HIS WIFE, COLETTA  AND A DAUGHTER SHELLIE AND TWO GRANDCHILDREN.
THE FUNERAL IS FRIDAY AND HALLIGAN-MCCABE-DEVRIES FUNERAL HOME
IN DAVENPORT IS IN CHARGE OF ARRANGEMENTS.    HE WAS A GOOD
ANNOUNCER AND MUSICIAN AND I ENJOYED PERIODIC VISITS TO KMAQ
OVER THE YEARS.

18 YEARS AGO THIS SUMMER....
FOUND THE ABOVE YESTERDAY WHEN LOOKING FOR SOMETHNG IN MY FILES.

60 YEARS AGO THIS SUMMER AS PRINTED LAST
WEEK IN MY HOMETOWN NEWSPAPER IN
WISCONSIN, WHICH I STILL GET WEEKLY....
HARD TO BELIEVE I WAS ONCE 16.

HAD 7 INCHES AND IT CAUSED SOME PROBLEMS.
TODAY, NICE DAY AGAIN WITH A HIGH OF 87.
FOR THE REST OF THE WEEK....
TOMORROW, SLIGHT CHANCE OF RAIN, HIGH OF 88.
WEDNESDAY, SUNNY AND 81.
THURSDAY, SUNNY AND 84.
FRIDAY, SUNNY AND 85.

THE GREAT JONES COUNTY FAIR CAME TO A CLOSE LAST NIGHT AND
WAS ANOTHER GREAT FAIR WITH ATTENDANCE THURSDAY, FRIDAY
AND SATURDAY, OVER 20,000 DAILY.      LIKE LAST YEAR,  THEY ANNOUNCED
NEXT YEAR'S BIG ACT SATURDAY.      AND A BIG ONE IT IS.    CARRIE UNDERWOOD WILL COME TO MONTICELLO TO THE FAIR NEXT JULY.

LOUIE CLASEN, OWNER OF TIMBER LANES WILL BE ON KMAQ'S "JUST
TALK" SHOW TO TELL ABOUT HIS 25TH ANNIVERSARY AT THE BOWLING
LANES COMING UP IN EARLY AUGUST.     YOU CAN LISTEN TO "JUST TALK" ON KMAQ AM AND FM AND ON OUR KMAQ WEB SITE,  HOME  PAGE.

SUNDAY 2015 JACKSON COUNTY FIR KICK-OFF

THIS WEEK'S COUNTY FAIR IN MAQUOKETA GOT OFF TO A GOOD START THIS
MORNING, DESPITE RAIN, WITH A GOOD TURN-OUT FOR THE  4-H BREAKFAST
OPEN TO THE PUBLIC AT THE PEARSON CENTER ON THE FAIRGROUNDS,
AND THE "SHARE THE FUN CONTEST".
THEN THIS AFTERNOON THE "QUEEN CONTEST".

AT 1:30, THE GRAND MARSHALL, MIKE FRANZEN OF MONMOUTH, AND HIS
FAMILY CAME TO THE STAGE TO BE RECOGNIZED.    FAIR BOARD MEMBER
JUDY TONDERUM TOLD ABOUT MIKE AND HIS FAMILY AND HOW MIKE HAS NOT ONLY SERVED ON THE FAIRBOARD (STARTING IN 1994) BUT ALSO
THE OTHER THINGS HE HAS HELP HELPED THE FAIR WITH OVER THE  YEARS.

 MIKE (HOLDING PLAQUE PRESENTED TO HIM) AT FAR RIGHT NEXT TO SANDY, HIS FIANCE.    SINCE MIKE ALSO HELPS OUT WITH THE JONES COUNTY FAIR AND WYOMING FAIR, HIS IS KNOW BY MANY AS "MR. FAIR".

NEXT, THE  FAIR FARM FAMILY CAME TO THE STAGE.   LaVONNE (AND THE
LATE FLOYD) PETERS FAMILY, OF RURAL ANDREW, COVERING 70 YEARS AS
BOOSTERS AND BACKERS OF THE JACKSON COUNTY FAIR.   
THE PETERS FAMILY IS LARGE...27 IN THE ABOVE PHOTO, AND ONE OF THE SEVEN CHILDREN (OUT OF STATE) MISSING SUNDAY, BUT WILL BE HERE FOR THE PARADE WEDNESDAY NIGHT.

THE FAIR QUEEN CANDIDATES WERE NEXT.

FOR $1,500 TO CLEAN UP THE LAWN, GET RID OF GARBAGE, AND TAKE DOWN
A POOL.     JACKSON COUNTY ZONING ADMINISTRATOR BEN KOBER WAS
TOLD TO PERSUE THE MATTER FURTHER.   NO ONE LIVES IN IT AND
I THINK THE OWNER IS NOT FROM AROUND HERE.

IN BUSINESS NEWS:    FINANCIAL ADVISORS JOHN LONG, RON SNELL, AND BRET JOHNSON ANNOUNCED THIS WEEK THAT THEY HAVE JOINED AMERIPRISE FINANCIAL.     THEY HAVE 55 YEARS OF COMBINED FINANCIAL
SERVICES AND ARE LOCATED AT 414 EAST PLATT IN MAQUOKETA.
THEY ALSO HAVE AN OFFICE IN BELLEVUE.    THEIR OFFICE MANAGER IS DENISE REEG AND BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT SPECIALIST IS RANDY KINGERY.

IN HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL, THE DEWITT BOYS LOST IN THE 8TH
(EXTRA INNING) BY A SQUEEZ BUNT, PREVENTING THEM FROM GOING

HAD TO BRING IN A SNOW  PLOW TO PLOW THEM OFF THE BIG BRIDGE.

SHANNON FLAGEL IS THE NEW DIRECTOR OF LITTLE SHEPHERD PRE-SCHOOL LOCATED IN THE FIRST LUTHERAN CHURCH IN MAQUOKETA.
FLAGEL WILL ALSO SERVE AS THE TEACHER OF THE THREE YEAR OLD CLASS.   SHE IS  A GRADUATE OF CENTRAL COMMUNITY SCHOOLS IN
DEWITT AND THEN ATTENDED SCOTT COMMUNITY COLLEGE,  MAJORING IN EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION.       SHE HAS HAD 5 YEARS OF EXPERIENCE AT THE ROCK ISLAND ARSENAL CHILD DEVELOPMENT CENTER.   SHE IS MARRIED TO JAKE AND SHE REPLACES AMY FISHWILD.


THE 18-MONTH OLD GIRL THAT WAS UNRESPONSIVE MONDAY AFTER FALLING INTO A BABY SITTER SWIMMING POOL AT ANDREW, DIED
YESTERDAY AT UNIVERSITY HOSPITALS.   SHE IS NIX JONES.

AFTER READING ABOVE....MAYBE MAQUOKETA COULD SHOULD CONSIDER THIS.

RICHARD HARDIN "RJ", AGE 79, DIED JULY 16TH AT SALIDA, COLORADO, AFTER A LONG BATTLE WITH PARKINSON'S DISEASE.   HE WAS BORN IN
MAQUOKETA TO DYLON AND LOLA HARDIN AND GRADUATED FROM'
MAQUOKETA HIGH SCHOOL.    HE WAS A PILOT.   HIS WIFE DIED IN 2011.
SURVIVORS INCLUDE HIS MOTHER, LOLA, IN MAQUOKETA.     THE FUNERAL
WILL BE JULY 25TH IN SALIDA.

THE BELLEVUE MARQUETTE SOFTBALL TEAM  AT THE STATE TOURNAMENT IN FORT DODGE, LOST THEIR OPENING GAME YESTERDAY....AND TODAY
FOR 5TH PLACE, LOST AGAIN, BUT THIS AFTERNOON, WON 5 TO 3,
GIVING THEM 7TH PLACE IN THE STATE.   THE SAME FINISH AS LAST YEAR.
GREAT SEASON MOHAWKS!!

IF THE DEWITT BOYS WIN TONIGHT, THEY GO TO THE STATE TOURNAMENT
NEXT WEEK.   GO SABERS!

A BIRTH:   JASON AND JENNIFER KIELER OF WISCONSIN ARE PARENTS OF A BOY BORN JULY 10TH IN DUBUQUE.    MATERNAL GRANDPARENTS ARE
MARK AND LINDA DRAKE OF RURAL MAQUOKETA.

WENT TO A BAPTISM A COUPLE WEEKS AGO AT A LUTHERAN CHURCH
IN EARLVILLE, ILLINOIS (COUPLE HOURS FROM HERE) AND RIGHT AFTER ENTERING THE FRONT DOOR, THIS HOME MADE SIGN IS ON THE WALL.

THE BELLEVUE MARQUETTE GIRLS SOFTBALL TEAM PLAYED TODAY
IN THE STATE TOURNAMENT AT FORT DODGE AND HELD A 3 TO 0  LEAD
AFTER THE END OF THE 6TH INNING.     THEN LOST THE GAME IN THE FINAL
7TH INNING....LOOSING 6 TO 5.     THEIR BEST PITCHER JOINED THE NAVY,
IS SERVING ALREADY, AND WAS NOT AVAILABLE FOR THE TOURNAMENT.

REPUBLICAN PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE AND GOVERNOR OF LOUISIANA BOBBY JINDAL VISITED THE CAMPBELL FARM IN GRAND MOUND
YESTERDAY AFTERNOON AND KMAQ NEWS DIRECTOR CODY BARNES WAS THERE AND GOT A COMMENT (LONG) FROM HIM FOR THE NEWS TODAY.

"ANT MAN" IS SHOWING NOW AT THE VOY 1 THEATRE.    EVERY TUESDAY NIGHT IS BARGAIN NIGHT AND EVERY WEDNESDAY NIGHT, FREE POPCORN.

ONE OF MAQUOKETA'S OLDEST BUSINESS ESTABLISHMENS HAS MOVED TO
414 PERSHING ROAD AT THE NORTH CITY LIMITS.     KELLAMS & AND BERTSCH HEATING AND AIR CONDITIONING.    WHEN I CAME TO TOWN IN 1958, THEY HAD JUST INSTALLED THE WATER-COOLED AIR CONDITIONING
AT KMAQ'S NEW STUDIOS AT 136 1/2 SOUTH MAIN.    ALLAN COOK WAS
AN EMPLOYEE OF MR. KELLAMS AND MR. BERTSCH AND LATER PURCHASED THE BUSINESS AND AFTER RETIRING, SOLD IT TO HIS SON LEE WHO
STILL IS THE OWNER.   

MAQUOKETA HAS CHAINSAW WOOD CARVING IN THE DOWNTOWN
LITTLE BEAR PARK AND (ABOVE) DEWITT ALSO HAS ONE IN THEIR DOWNTOWN LINCOLN PARK.

WHEN VISITING MAQUOKETA THIS SUMMER, TAKE A TOUR OF THE  CLINTON ENGINES MUSEUM.

JACKSON COUNTY DEPUTY SHERIFF TERRY ROLING INVESTIGATED AN ACCIDENT FRIDAY AROUND 12:50 P.M. INVOLVING WILLIAM CAMPBELL, AGE 60, OF OXFORD JUNCTION AND TERRY OSTERT, AGE 58, OF MAQUOKETA.
THE CAMPBELL PICK-UP WAS PARKED FACING EAST ON 159TH STREET 8 MILES NORTH OF MAQUOKETA WHEN THE OSTERT VEHICLE WAS GOING
WEST AND DID NOT REALIZE THE TRAILER STUCK OUT PAST THE TRUCK SO FAR....AND OSTERT STRUCK THE SIDE OF THE CAMPBELL TRAILER.
OSTERT CAME TO A STOP IN FRONT OF THE TRAILER AND THE TRAILER
SLID TO THE SOUTH.     $1,500 DAMAGE TO OSTERT'S CAR AND $800 DAMAGE TO THE  TRAILER.    NO INJURIES AND NO CHARGES.

SURE TO BE ONE OF THE LARGEST AND BEST IN IOWA.    LOCATED AT THE ENTRANCE TO ELMHURST CEMETERY ON OLD HIGWAY 61 AS YOU DRIVE INTO DEWITT FROM THE NORTH.

THIS IS THE WEEK OF THE 163RD GREAT JONES COUNTY FAIR AT MONTICELLO.    IT STARTS TOMORROW WITH A FREE GATE FOR A "SNEAK"
PREVIEW.    LEIGHTON HEPKER WILL BE BROADCASTING ON KMAQ FROM
THE FAIRGROUNDS WEDNESDAY AND FRIDAY AFTERNOON AND I WILL BE DOING REMOTE BROADCASTS THURSDAY AND SATURDAY.    IT IS ONE OF THE BIGGEST  COUNTY FAIRS IN IOWA.

AT 10:45 TOMORROW (TUESDAY) MORNING, KMAQ PLAY BY PLAY ANNOUNCER MATT CLARK WILL BE IN  FORT DOGE TO BROADCAST THE
FIRST OF 3 SOFTBALL GAMES BELLEVUE MARQUETTE CATHOLIC WILL
BE PLAYING IN THE STATE SOFTBALL TOURNAMENT.    NO MID-DAY LOCAL
NEWS ON KMAQ TOMORROW.

SUNDAY CAR SHOW AT METHODIST CHURCHC

THE FIRST UNITED METHODIST CHURCH ON WESLEY DRIVE IN MAQUOKETA HELD A WAFFLE BREAKFAST SUNDAY MORNING AT THE CHURCH AND OUTSIDE, THE CORONADO CAR CLUB HAD A MINI CAR SHOW.    I TOOK A FEW PHOTOS AFTER

THURSDAY DAILY REPORT

OVERCAST THIS MORNING AND RAIN THIS AFTERNOON AND HIGH AROUND 70.    LITTLE MORE RAIN TONIGHT AND FRIDAY, SATURDAY AND SUNDAY
WILL BE HOT AND HUMID.'

A MAQUOKETA WOMAN SUFFERED POSSIBLE INJURIES AFTER ROLLING HER VEHICLE 4 TIMES ON A RURAL JACKSON COUNTY ROAD.    JACKSON COUNTY DEPUTY SHERIFF CHAD ROEDER INVESTIGATED THE ACCIDENT.
ROXANNE McCULOCH, 21, OF MAQUOKETA, WAS GOING EAST ON 150TH
STREET AND  LOST CONTROL, WENT INTO THE SOUTH DITCH AND ROLLED
4 TIMES, COMING TO REST ON ALL 4 WHEELS FACING NORTH.    $7,000 DAMAGE TO HER 2006 NISSAN.    McCULOCH DID NOT NEED TRANSPORT TO MEDICAL FACILITY AND WAS CITED FOR FAILURE TO MAINTAIN CONTROL.

REPUBLICAN PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE RICK SANTORUM VISITED
JACKSON MANUFACTURING IN MAQUOKETA WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON.
THE EVENT WAS BY INVITATION ONLY.    KMAQ NEWS DIRECTOR CODY
BARNES SAID THERE WAS AROUND A DOZEN CITIZENS PLUS A FEW
TV AND PRESS PEOPLE.    AMONG OTHER THINGS, HE TALKED ABOUT
THE IMPORTANCE OF CREATING MORE MANUFACTURING JOBS FOR THE AMERICAN ECONOMY.       SANTORUM WON THE 2012 IOWA CAUCUSES.

JACKSON COUNTY DEPUTY RANDY MANNING INVESTIGATED A 2-CAR ACCIDENT TUESDAY MORNING INVOLVING LARRY DAVIS, 66, OF MAQUOKETA AND KADE MANNING, 21, OF MAQUOKETAL.     DAVIS WAS GOING NORTH ON 200TH AVENUE AND ATTEMPTING TO TURN INTO A DRIVE WHEN MANNING
ATTEMPTED TO PASS DAVIS AND STRUCK THE DRIVER'S SIDE OF DAVIS.
$1,500 DAMAGE TO THE  DAVIS 2002 BUICK AND $2,500 DAMAGE TO THE MANNING 2005 MITSUBISHI.    NO INJURIES AND NOT CHARGES.

LOTS OF CITIES/COUNTIES AS AN ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT TOOL HAVE ESTABLISHED A SLOGAN.    MAQUOKETA...........

THE O'CONNOR-REGENWETHER VFW AND AUXILIARY, 3633,WILL BE HOLDING A BRAT/HOTDOG STAND FRIDAY (TOMORROW) FROM 10 AM UNTIL 6 PM AND SATURDAY, JULY 18TH FROM 10 AM UNTIL 2 PM....AT GASSER'S TRUE VALUE  HARDWARE.     THEY WILL BE RAISING FUNDS TO BENEFIT VETERAN'S PROGRAMS.
