THURSDAY DAILY REPORT
TODAY...SUNSHINE...SUNSHINE...SUNSHINE...SUNSHINE...
BUT HIGH OF ONLY 45.
MORE SUNSHINE TOMORROW, BUT HIGH OF 37.
WE ARE A GOOD 10 DEGRESS BELOW NORMAL DAILY.
THE MAQUOKETA YMCA SWIMMING POOL REMAINS CLOSED. THE PROBLEM...THE CEILING HANGING ACOUSTIC PANELS, BLUE AND GRAY, SHOWN ABOVE. THEY LOOK NICE AND THEY KEEP SOUND LEVELS DOWN.
THREE HAVE DROPPED INTO THE POOL. EACH TIME, NO ONE WAS THERE AND NO ONE HURT BUT THIS COULD HAPPEN WITH MANY IN THE POOL.
MORE COULD FALL. SCOTT WARREN, MANAGER OF THE Y, SAYS THEY ARE NOT SURE WHAT TO DO, BUT ARE INVESTIGATING SOLUTIONS. THEY HANG BY WIRES AND THE EYELETS GIVE AWAY. THERE ARE 3 WITH EACH PANEL AND ONCE ONE GIVES WAY, IT PUTS PRESSURE ON THE OTHER TWO AND
EVENTUALLY THE PANEL DROPS. IT COULD BE AWHILE BEFORE THE POOL
OPENS AGAIN.
THE OLD OBSERVATION DECK AT THE HURSTVILLE INTERPRETIVE CENTER
MARSH AREA NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. WORKERS FINISHED PUTTING
IN THE NEW ONE LAST WEEK AND IT IS NOW READY FOR USE AGAIN.
IT IS THE SAME SIZE AS THE OLD, BUT MUCH STURDIER, STRONGER AND
WITH METAL RAILINGS AND A LONG LASTING PLASTIC FLOOR. THIS ONE SHOULD LAST FOR MANY, MANY YEARS. A PERFECT PLACE TO STOP YOUR CAR (OR BUS) AND GET OUT TO VIEW THE MARSH AND WILD LIFE. THE OLD WAS USED A LOT AND THIS ONE WILL ALSO BE VERY POPULAR. LOCATED
ON OLD HIGHWAY 61, ON THE EAST SIDE OF THE INTERPRETIVE CENTER
LAND AND WATER AREA.
THIS IS THE 40-FOOT-LONG NARROW-GUAGE LaMOTTE RAILROAD DEPOT
GIVEN TO THE JACKSON COUNTY HISTORICAL SOCIETY BY DIXIE CLAUSSEN
OF LaMOTTE. IT WILL BE MOVED TO MAQUOKETA TO THE CLINTON ENGINES MUSEUM SITE BEFORE JUNE 1ST.
THIS ARTIST'S SKETCH IS OF THE NEW SAVANNA-SABULA BRIDGE THAT WE WILL BE DRIVING IN ABOUT 4 YEARS. WIDER AND HIGHER.
THANKS FOR CHECKING IN.

ANOTHER COOL, CLOUDY DAY.
TOMORROW, WARMER...MAYBE IN THE 50'S FOR ONE DAY ONLY.
I ATTENDED THE BROWN BAG LUNCH TODAY AT THE CLINTON ENGINES MUSEUM (AN EVERY TUESDAY NOON-HOUR EVENT OPEN TO ALL) AND
LEARNED A LOT ABOUT THE LAMOTTE NARROW GUAGE RAILROAD DEPOT THAT HAS BEEN DONATED TO THE JACKSON COUNTY HISTORICAL SOCIETY
AND MUST BE MOVED TO THE CLINTON ENGINES MUSEUM SITE BY
NO LATER THAN JUNE 1ST. IT WAS DONATED BY DIXIE CLAUSSEN, WHO IS
OWNER OF THE CIRCLE C BAR AND RESTAURANT IN LAMOTTE. HER LATE HUSBAND RICK (MCHS BASKETBALL STANDOUT) RESTORED IT YEARS AGO.
IT IS 22 FEET BY 40 FEET AND WILL BE MOVED HERE BY A HOUSE-MOVING
FIRM. I SUSPECT THAT MOVE WILL BE COVERED BY EVERY TV AND
RADIO STATION AND NEWSPAPER IN EASTERN IOWA. I'LL KEEP YOU
POSTED ON ALL FURTHER DEVELOPMENTS. THEN, SOMETIME THIS
SUMMER YOU CAN ALL COME AND SEE IT. THE SMALL NARROW GUAGE
RAILROAD RAN FROM BELLEVUE TO CASCADE (MILWAUKEE ROAD) FROM
1880 TO 1936. IN LATE YEARS, IT HAD HARD TIMES FINANCIALLY AND
THE VERY HARSH WINTER OF 1936 DID IT IN.
A CLINTON NATIVE IS THE NEW HEAD COACH AT MCHS, HIRED LAST NIGHT
BY THE BOARD. HE IS DEREK ROBERTS, IN HIS 20'S, AND HE REPLACES CHAD SPECHT WHO RESIGNED AT THE END OF THE SEASON. FOR DEREK, HIS FIRST HEAD COACHING JOB. HE HAS SERVED AS SOPHOMORE COACH
AT ANKENY CENTENNIAL AND AT CEDAR RAPIDS KENNEDY. HE WILL
ALSO BE MATH TEACHER AT THE HIGH SCHOOL. MAQUOKETA AD
TOM GRUENWALD DESCRIBED HIM AS A BASKETBALL "JUNKIE" AND A REAL
STUDENT OF THE GAME.
BUSINESS NEWS, CHESTER CHICKEN AT LEN'S BP ON WEST PLATT IS NOW OPEN, AFTER REPLACING A COOKER. OPEN 7 A.M. UNTIL 10 P.M. WITH
DINE-IN TABLES AND DRIVE-UP WINDOW.
MATT OSTERHAUS, OF OSTERHAUS PHARMACY, FINISHES UP HIS YEAR

DENSE FOG THIS MORNING. TWO SCHOOL DISTRICTS STARTED CLASSES
TWO HOURS LATE.
FOG CLEARED BY NOON AND THIS AFTERNOON, SUNNY SKIES AND A HIGH

THE DENSE FOG THIS MORNING CONTRIBUTED TO A THREE-VEHICLE ACCIDENT JUST BEFORE 9 THIS MORNING JUST OVER 4 MILES EAST OF
MAQUOKETA ON HIGHWAY 64. A CLINTON MAN WAS OPERATING A DUMP TRUCK, STOPPED ON THE HIGHWAY AND WAS ATTEMPTING TO BACK INTO
A PRIVATE DRIVEWAY ON 64. ANOTHER CLINTON MAN WAS WESTBOUND
ON THE HIGHWAY IN PICKUP PULLING A TRAILER AND WAS UNABLE TO
SEE THE DUMP TRUCK AND STRUCK THE REAR OF IT. BOTH VEHICLES WERE BADLY DAMAGED AND BLOCKED BOTH LANES OF TRAFFIC.
NICOLE IHRIG, AGE 22, OF MAQUOKETA, WAS ALSO WESTBOUND AND UNABLE TO SEE THE ACCIDENT UNTIL THE LAST MINUTE AND DID AN
EVASIVE MANEUVER THAT CAUSED HER VAN TO GO INTO THE DITCH.
ONE OF THE CLINTON DRIVERS HAD TO BE EXTRICATED BY THE MAQUOKETA RESCUE SQUAD AND HE AND A PASSENGER AND THE OTHER CLINTON
DRIVER WERE ALL TAKEN TO THE HOSPITAL FOR POSSIBLE INJURIES.
CHARGES ARE PENDING AND THERE WAS $2,000 DAMAGE TO THE DUMP TRUCK AND $7,000 DAMAGE TO THE PICKUP. THE MAQUOKETA VEHICLE
DID NOT SUSTAIN ANY SUBSTANTIAL DAMAGE.
SHORT 5-MINUTE CITY COUNCIL MEETING LAST NIGHT WITH COUNCILMEN
APPROVING THE NEW FISCAL YEAR CITY BUDGET. NO ONE SPOKE AT THE PUBLIC HEARING AND THE COUNCIL THEN APPROVED IT WITH A TAX ASKING OF $12.12 PER ONE-THOUSAND DOLLARS OF ASSESSED VALUATION.
THAT IS 96-CENTS LOWER THAN THE CURRENT TAX ASKING. THE BUDGET WILL BE JUST OVER $11 MILLION AND THE CITY WILL SEE INCREASED
REVENUE THROUGH HIGHER VALUATIONS AND INCREASED TAX INCREMENT
FUNDING DOLLARS COMING BACK TO THE CITY FROM THE FAMILY DOLLAR
DISTRIBUTION CENTER PROJECT.
LAST SATURDAY NIGHT, MIDWAY THROUGH THE COMEDY SHOW AT THE OHNWARD FINE ARTS CENTER, AN UNINVITED GUEST SHOWED UP AND
WAS NOTICED BY A COUPLE LADIES WATCHING THE SHOW. ONE CALLED OUT....THERE'S A MOUSE IN THE HOUSE. THE MOUSE WAS SCARED-OFF

HE ALSO TOLD ME THAT LONGTIME FAMOUS COUNTRY SINGER JOHN CONLEE HAS BEEN SIGNED TO DO A SHOW AT OHNWARD JUNE 14TH.....A SUNDAY 2 P.M. SHOW.
REMEMBER LAST WEEK I ASKED IF ANYONE REMEMBERS WHO WAS THE
JACKSON COUNTY EXTENSION DIRECTOR AND HOME ECONOMIST IN THE LATE 50'S IN MAQUOKETA. FIVE PEOPLE RESPONDED AND NOT ONE
IDENTIFIED BOTH. MOST KNEW JOHN HENDERSON WAS THE EXTENSION
DIRECTOR BUT NO ONE REMEMBERED THAT CATHERINE RUTH WAS THE
HOME ECONOMIST.
IN SPORTS, AN ESTIMATED 70 PEOPLE ATTENDED THE MAQUOKETA HIGH
SCHOOL WRESTLING BANQUET LAST SUNDAY NIGHT AT THE HIGH SCHOOL.
COACH DR. PAUL KOOB PRESENTED 16 VARSITY LETTERS. SENIORS
BEAU BOWMAN AND LOGAN MAYBERRY WERE RECOGNIZED AS
