CHECK THE PHOTO AND STORY BELOW ON A GAS STATION IN MAQUOKETA WHEN THERE WERE LOTS OF SMALL GAS STATIONS.   AND.... THAT DIDN'T SELL MUCH OF ANYTHING BUT GAS... AND WHEN GAS WAS CHEAP.

MAQUOKETA, 1963

THE MAQUOKETA HIGH SCHOOL CLASS OF 1954 (HAD THEIR REUNION
IN SEPTEMBER) HAD LUNCH TODAY (ABOUT 10 MEMBERS) AT THE DECKER HOTEL.     THE CLASS WILL CONTINUE TO HAVE LUNCH NOW AND THEN
UNTIL THE NEXT REUNION.      ANN WILCOX EDELMAN BROUGHT HER HUSBAND JACK ALONG AND HE BROUGHT ALONG AN OLD PHOTO OF HIS
CONOCO GAS STATION AND TANK WAGON.
JACK IN 1963 STARTED OFF IN MAQUOKETA WITH JUST THE TANK WAGON
TRUCK, DELIVERING GASOLINE AND FUEL OIL.   THE GAS STATION THEN WAS KOCH'S CONOCO AND AROUND  3 YEARS LATER, JACK BOUGHT THE STATION AND IT BECAME EDELMAN'S CONOCO.    IN 1968, HE LEFT CONOCO AND SOON ENDED UP HAVING A LONG CAREER AS AN AIR TRAFFIC CONTROLLER AT O'HARA IN CHICAGO.     HIS MILITARY SERVICE GAVE HIM THE KNOW-HOW
TO BE A CONTROLLER.    AFTER RETIRING, JACK AND ANN MOVED TO
DUBUQUE.      THE STATION ABOVE WAS AT THE CORNER OF NORTH MAIN AND WEST QUARRY STREET, ACROSS THE STREET NORTH OF OF THE POST OFFICE.   IT IS NOW A PARKING LOT FOR THE NEWSPAPER AND THE
NEXT DOOR BUILDING (STILL STANDING) TO THE NORTH  BACK  THEN WAS O'CONNOR AND JAYNES USED CARS.    THIS IS THE CORNER WHERE THE "STREETSCAPE"  PROGRAM FOR DOWNTOWN MAQUOKETA WILL START NEXT SPRING.    IN 1963, GAS WAS PROBABLY 35-CENTS A GALLON AND A  STAMP WAS A NICKEL.    I WAS IN MY FIRST OF TWO YEARS IN THE U.S. ARMY AT FORT HOOD, TEXAS.
