MAQUOKETA (ON EAST PLATT IN THE FORMER THEISEN'S BUILDING) HAS DIED IN A DIRT BIKE ACCIDENT IN LINN COUNTY. KOLE KROMINGA, AGE 27,
OF ANAMOSA, DIED OF INJURIES IN THE ACCIDENT WHICH HAPPENED AT 11:30 A.M. SUNDAY AT 31105 CAMPFIRE ROAD NEAR TROY MILLS. WHEN
EMERGENCY CREWS ARRIVED, THEY NOTICED THAT KROMINGA HAD HIT THE REAR OF A SKID LOADER WITH HIS DIRT BIKE. FUNERAL SERVICES
ARE PENDING. HE IS THE SON OF GREG KROMINGA OF MONTICELLO.
THE FATHER OWNS A LARGE FARM MACHINERY BUSIENESS THERE. HE
HAS OWNED THE MAQUOKETA BUSINESS FOR QUITE A FEW YEARS. IT WAS FIRST LOCATED JUST OFF S. MAIN STREET, ON THE ROAD LEADING TO THE
IKE'S CLUBHOUSE. A COUPLE YEARS AGO, GREG KROMINGA MOVED THE
BUSINESS TO THE LARGE THEISENS BUILDING AND KOLE MANAGED THE
MAQUOKETA ATV AND SNOW MOBILE BUSINESS HERE.
THE CENTERVILLE ROAD WAS REPAIRED FRIDAY IN NORTHERN JACKSON COUNTY AND WAS DAMAGED AGAIN SUNDAY. SOMEONE PULLED THE BARRICADES OFF THE CLOSED ROAD AND SOME CARS DROVE ON THE CONCRETE POURED FRIDAY AND SOMEONE WALKED ON ALSO.
THIS TIME THE CONCRETE WAS PARTIALLY SET (DRIED) AND COUNTY ENGINEER CLARK SCHLOZ SAID THEY WON'T KNOW FOR SEVERAL YEARS
IF THIS WEEKEND'S DAMAGE WILL CAUSE A PROBLEM WITH THE ROAD
IN FUTURE YEARS. THIS WAS THE FOURTH TIME THE ROAD WAS
DAMAGED BEFORE REOPENING. IT WAS SCHEDULED TO OPEN THIS
AFTERNOON.
CITY ELECTION DAY IS TOMORROW AND MAQUOKETA HAS NO CONTEST.
BUT THERE ARE SOME CONTESTS IN THE AREA AND THEREFORE KMAQ NEWS WILL HAVE ELECTION RETURNS STARTING AT 8 TOMORROW NIGHT.

ANNUAL DINNER WAS YESTERDAY AT THE FAIRGROUNDS. A NICE
TURNOUT FOR THE PROGRAM AT 2:30 IN THE MUSEUM AND AN EQUALLY
GOOD TURNOUT FOR THE DINNER STARTING AT 4. HUNDREDS ATTENDED.

WORKED SUNDAYS AS AN AFTERNOON BIG-BAND MUSIC DISC JOCKEY ON KMAQ-AM. TOM IS CHAMBER EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR HERE IN MAQUOKETA.

SOCIETY HALL OF FAME. THE HARRISON'S HAD A FUNERAL HOME AND
FURNITURE STORE THAT STARTED IN THE 1800'S, THAT EVENTUALLY WAS PURCHASED BY GEORGE HAYLOCK AND JIM O'HARA AND IS THE LAHEY FUNERAL HOME NOW. IN THE MIDDLE OF PHOTO IS HELEN FEENEY OF MAQUOKETA. HER MOTHER WAS A HARRISON, THE ONLY DAUGHTER. AT LEFT, HER SON PHIL FEENEY OF NEVEDA, IOWA. AT RIGHT, HIS WIFE MADONNA. HELEN'S HUSBAND WAS LONGTIME JACKSON COUNTY TREASURER. THE FEENEY FAMILY LIVED AT 402 NORTH MAIN, WHICH WAS ALSO THE HOME OF THE HARRISON'S. IT HAD BEEN THE FAMILY HOME FOR 150 YEARS UNTIL SOLD LAST YEAR, WHEN HELEN MOVED INTO THE MAQUOKETA CARE CENTER. PHIL GAVE A SHORT TALK ABOUT THE HARRISON'S AND IT WAS INTERESTING TO HEAR THAT ONE OF THEIR 3 LOCATIONS WAS WHERE THE BAKERY IS NOW. THE BASEMENT WAS USED FOR THE WORK SHOP TO BUILD CASKETS AND OTHER FURNITURE. THE STREET LEVEL WAS FOR THE FURNITURE STORE AND UPSTAIRS WAS THE CHAPEL. THERE WAS AN OPEN STAIRWAY TO THE CHAPEL AT THAT TIME, A STAIRWAY HE SAID THAT WAS SIMILAR TO THE STAIRWAY AT THE DECKER HOTEL.
ALSO INDUCTED IN THE HALL OF FAME. MURIEL ALLEN. A CAREER ARMY NURSE. THEN NURSE AFTER AT OUR HOSPITAL. LONGTIME VFW MEMBER
AND LEADER, LOCALLY AND STATEWIDE. BIG SUPPORTER OF CAMP COURAGEOUS, ETC. ETC. HER SISTER ELOISE RUBEL OF MAQUOKETA
GAVE AN INTERESTING TALK ABOUT HER SISTER'S LIFE AND CAREER.
MANY OF YOU REMEMBER HER. SHE DIED ABOUT 10 YEARS AGO. SHE
WAS A GOOD FRIEND OF MINE AND STOPPED OFTEN AT KMAQ FOR EITHER
PUBLICITY OR HELP WITH ONE OF HER PROJECTS. SHE NEVER TOOK NO
FOR AN ANSWER.
