ANOTHER NICE DAY....AROUND 80!
MORE COMING!
SHOULD BE NICE WEATHER FOR HOMECOMING!

 A CORRECTION:
IN YESTERDAY'S REPORT, I HAD IT THAT PAULETTE CARLSON DIED.
IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN PAULETTE CRAFTON.    SEE MORE
IN YESTERDAY'S STORY.

THE NEW KWIK STAR STORE IN MAQUOKETA HAD A BIG AD IN
THE NEWSPAPER TODAY ANNOUNCING THAT IT WOULD OPEN
FOR BUSINESS AT 5 A.M. THURSDAY, OCTOBER 3RD.
THE RIBBON CUTTING CEREMONY WILL BE LATER, ON
WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 9TH AT 10 A.M.     THE AD INCLUDED 4 COUPONS.
TODAY A FENCE IS GOING  UP AROUND THE REAR AND SIDES OF PROPERTY AND TREES, SHRUBS AND FLOWERS ARE BEING PLANTED.
FAST BUILD AND FIRST CLASS WOULD BE THE WORDS TO BEST DESCRIBE THE BUILDING OF THE NEW MAQUOKETA BUSINESS.   I HAVE NOT HEARD WHO THE MANAGER IS AND HOW MANY PEOPLE WILL  WORK AT THE
24 HOUR FACILITY.   AND WORK CONTINUES FAST-FORWARD AT THEIR
OTHER (2ND STORE)  ACROSS FROM WAL MART, WHICH WILL OPEN
LATER THIS FALL.

THE WATER MAIN BREAK WAS FINISHED LATE LAST NIGHT IN DOWNTOWN
MAQUOKETA.    AN 18-INCH LONG 9 INCH PIPE SECTION WAS RUSTED AWAY AND NEW PIPE WELDED IN  PLACE.   MAIN STREET IS DIRTY TODAY.
HOPEFULLY, IT WILL BE CLEANED-UP BEFORE FRIDAY AFTERNOON'S
HOMECOMING PARADE.

FINISHING WORK CONTINUES TODAY AT THE NEW LITTLE BEAR PARK.

JAKE BICKFORD WAS INSTALLED THIS MORNING AS NEW PRESIDENT
OF THE MAQUOKETA OPTIMIST CLUB.    HE SERVED AS PRESIDENT
50 YEARS AGO, SHORTLY AFTER IT WAS CHARTERED.     HE HAS BEEN
A GOOD MEMBER ALL THESE YEARS.    THE CLUB MEETS EVERY
WEDNESDAY MORNING AT 7 FOR A BREAKFAST MEETING AT THE
EAGLES CLUB.    ONE OF ITS MAIN PROJECTS IS TO PUT UP NEARLY 500 FLAGS ACROSS TOWN FOR  5 HOLIDAYS EACH YEAR.    TED STRAIT
IS THE RETIRING PRESIDENT.    JAKE BICKFORD RETIRED 4 YEARS AGO AS OWNER OF BILL MOLER'S CLOTHING STORE.   MANY OF YOU HAD
HIS WIFE JUDY AS A TEACHER.   SHE ALSO IS RETIRED FROM TEACHING.

IT IS...
HOMECOMING WEEK
THE MAQUOKETA CARDINALS
AGAINST THE MARION INDIANS

ANOTHER BEAUTIFUL DAY TODAY AND THE WEATHER WILL STAY THIS WAY ALL WEEK LONG.    WARMEST DAY WILL BE FRIDAY, 80.

A WATER MAIN BREAK IN MAQUOKETA THIS MORNING ON NORTH MAIN STREET, JUST A COUPLE HUNDRED FEET SOUTH OF KMAQ.

ALLIANCE WATER RESOURCES, MAQUOKETA DIVISION, WENT RIGHT TO
WORK WITH FIVE MEN AND ONE WOMAN.    THEY DIG THE HOLE ABOUT 5 OR 6 FEET DOWN AND LOOK FOR THE LEAK.    THEN THEY BRING IN THE
4 BY 8 PANELS AND PLACE THEM AROUND THE EDGE OF THE HOLE.
A HYDRAULIC JACK KEEPS THOSE PANELS  IN PLACE AND PREVENTS A CAVE-IN.    THE WATER IS TURNED OFF, THE REPAIR MADE, AND THEY THEN FILL UP THE HOLE AND FINISH THE PROJECT.     WITH GOOD LUCK, THEY CAN DO THE JOB IN A FEW HOURS BUT IT CAN TAKE AS LONG AT 15 OR  MORE HOURS.   OF COURSE WINTER WEATHER CAN MAKE THE JOB
SLOW AND HARD.    THE PANELS ARE TAKEN OUT AND RE-USED.

THE ST. LOUIS CARDINALS ARE STILL IN FIRST PLACE, TWO GAMES
AHEAD OF THE PIRATES AND THE REDS.    GO CARDINALS
THE MAQUOKETA CARDINALS PLAY MARION FRIDAY NIGHT AT GOODENOW
FIELD.   GO CARDINALS

YEAR.   CHRIS AND VICKIE MEINECKE NEXT DOOR, PURCHASED IT.

88 TODAY!
I SOLD POPPIES AT FAREWAY THIS AFTERNOON AND I WAS IN THE SHADE AND WITH A NICE BREEZE, IT DIDN'T SEEM THAT HOT.
NO RAIN TODAY, BUT RAIN IS FORECAST FOR TONIGHT WITH A LOW
OF 64.    RAIN TOMORROW MORNING AGAIN AND THEN SUNNY TOMORROW
AFTERNOON AND FOR THE REST OF THE WEEKEND.   GOOD WEATHER
FOR AT LEAST THE NEXT 5 DAYS.'

MAQUOKETA MUNICIPAL ELECTRIC  UTILITY BOARD MEMBERS SAID
UNOFFICIALLY LAST NIGHT AT THEIR MEETING THAT THEY WANT TO
SEE THE POWER PLANT MOTHBALLED AT THE END OF THE YEAR.
ANOTHER OPTION WOULD BE TO GO "STANDBY", BUT THE COST WOULD
BE VERY HIGH COMPARED TO THE "MOTHBALL OPTION".   MANAGER MIKE NICKESON LEAVES IN OCTOBER TO A NEW JOB IN DUBUQUE AS
REPORTED HERE YESTERDAY.     THE MMEU PLANT LOOSES BIG REVENUE
IN DECEMBER WHEN THE WPPI (IN WISCONSIN) CAPACITY PAYMENTS
END.

POPPY DAYS ARE TODAY, TOMORROW AND SATURDAY IN MAQUOKETA.
THEY ARE BEING OFFERED FOR A DONATION BY VFW AND VFW AUXILIARY
MEMBERS AT WAL MART, FAREWAY AND THEISEN'S.    THE VFW BUDDY
POPPIES ARE STILL ASSEMBLED BY DISABLED AND NEEDY VETERANS
IN VA HOSPITALS.

FIVE FIRE DEPARTMENTS, INCLUDING MAQUOKETA, BATTLED A HOUSE FIRE
NEAR BELLEVUE MOST OF YESTERDAY AFTERNOON.   NO ONE WAS HOME WHEN THE FIRE STARTED AND THE HOME WAS A TOTAL LOSS.'

MAGGIE MAE FROM WISCONSIN IS COMING TO THE OHNWARD FINE
ARTS CENTER IN MAQUOKETA ON SATURDAY NIGHT, OCTOBER 12TH.
SHE IS A REGULAR PERFORMER ON THE RFD TV "MIDWEST COUNTRY
TV SHOW" ON CABLE TV AND SAT TV.    SHE DID A SHOW FOR THE
DIARY ASSOCIATION AT THE FAIRGROUNDS A FEW  YEARS AGO THAT
WAS WELL ACCEPTED.

THE CLASS OF 58 IS HAVING THEIR 55TH CLASS REUNION THIS WEEKEND.
JAKE BICKFORD IS IN CHARGE.    THERE WILL BE LOTS OF TALK ABOUT
THE  CARDINAL FOOTBALL TEAM THAT WENT UNDEFEATED....THE ONLY TIME THAT HAS HAPPENED.

IT IS THE APPLE SEASON BUT IN CASE YOU ARE WONDERING, THERE IS NO LONGER A "TUBBS" ORCHARD.

IN CLOSING....ENJOY AN APPLE OR TWO SOON.

NICE RAIN THIS MORNING.
SUNSHINE THIS AFTERNOON, WITH HIGH OF 78.
MORE RAIN COMING, BUT NONE AFTER NOON FRIDAY.
WEEKEND WILL BE NICE.

A MAQUOKETA TEENAGER WAS NOT INJURED AFTER SHE PULLED
OUT IN FRONT OF A SEMI AT 8 A.M. THIS MORNING.   SHERIFF RUSS
KETTMANN SAID TANNA BRIMEYER, AGE 17, PULLED OUT OF HURSTVILLE
ROAD IN FRONT OF THE NORTHBOUND SEMI, DRIVEN BY 83 YEAR
OLD WALTER RATHMAN OF ELDRIDGE.    SHE WAS CHARGED.
THERE WAS $3,500 DAMAGE TO HER VEHICLE, OWNED BY TAMMY
MORTENSEN OF MAQUOKETA.    NO DAMAGE TO  THE SEMI.
WONDER HOW MANY 83-YEAR-OLD SEMI DRIVERS ARE OUT THERE
ON THE HIGHWAY??

A HOUSE (IN BAD SHAPE) WAS HERE THIS MORNING AND DOWN BY
THIS AFTERNOON ON THE END OF EAST JEFFERSON STREET, AND
ABOUT 100 YARDS WEST OF MT. HOPE AND SACRED HEART CEMETERIES.
BOBBY JOHNSON SAYS IT WAS THE DEATH OF HIS NEPHEW, STAFF
SERGENT DONALD GRIFFITH,JR., THAT INSPIRED HIM TO DONATE THE OLD HOUSE AND USE THE LAND FOR WHAT HE SAYS WILL BE THE JACKSON
COUNTY VETERAN'S MEMORIAL.   JOHNSON SAYS GRIFFITH DIED IN IRAQ
IN MARCH OF 2006.   THE ALL-COUNTY MEMORIAL WILL BE DEDICATED
IN HONOR OF GRIFFITH AND ALSO IN HONOR OF CORPORAL ZACHARY
REIFF OF PRESTON.    REIFF DIED IN AFGANISTAN IN NOVEMBER, 2011.
I'LL KEEP YOU POSTED ON FURTHER DEVELOPMENT OF THE MEMORIAL.

SHE IS COMING TO THE OHNWARD CENTER IN OCTOBER.
WHO IS SHE?

THE DEADLINE FOR FILING NOMINATION PAPERS FOR CITY OFFICES IS
AT 5 P.M. TOMORROW.   SO, WON'T BE LONG AND I'LL HAVE THE
LIST OF CANDIDATES.    EITHER TOMORROW OR FRIDAY.

SHEILA ZIEMBA DIED LAST MONTH IN WEST DES MOINES.    SHE IS
SURVIVED BY HER MOTHER IN MAQUOKETA, KIT HOYER.
MORE OF HER OBITUARY TOMORROW.

MOSTLY CLOUDY AND 66 THE HIGH TODAY.
RAIN LIKELY THE NEXT 2 DAYS AND LOOKING GOOD FOR THE WEEKEND.

THIS PHOTO I TOOK THIS AFTERNOON AT THE NEW LITTLE BEAR PARK,
LOOKING NORTH FROM QUARRY STREET.    A FEW MEN WERE WORKING
THIS AFTERNOON.    GO TO KWQC-TV FOR A FEATURE ON THE PARK DONE
BY FRAN RILEY.   IT WAS AIRED YESTERDAY AND THIS MORNING.
PLANS ARE STILL FIRM FOR THE GRAND OPENING OF THE PARK ON
SUNDAY AFTERNOON, SEPTEMBER 29TH.

GO TO THE KMAQ WEB SITE AND CLICK-ON THE HISTORY PHOTO BUTTON FOR NEARLY 50 PHOTOS.    TODAY, ADDED, A PHOTO OF GEORGE PETAROS
AND ALSO ONE OF SOPHIE PETAROS, THE LONGTIME OWNERS OF
MAQUOKETA'S  FAMOUS CAFE OF THE PAST, THE GREEN MILL.

MAQUOKETA ONCE HAD 4 FULLTIME VIDEO STORES.   THE LAST ONE
IS CLOSING AND THE BUILDING IS FOR SALE, ON WEST QUARRY STREET.
NETFLEX, RED BOX AND THE INTERNET....THE POPULAR WAY NOW TO
SELECT MOVIES FOR  HOME VIEWING.    THOUSANDS OF VIDEO STORES
LIKE ABOVE  HAVE CLOSED DURING THE PAST 5 YEARS.   I HAD 9 VIDEO
STORES MYSELF IN THE MID 80'S AND EARLY 90'S.    NONE NOW.

MAQUOKETA MUNICIPAL ELECTRIC UTILITY MANAGER MIKE NICKESON HAS RESIGNED.  HIS LAST DAY OF WORK WILL BE OCTOBER 11TH.   HE HAS BEEN MANAGER SINCE JUNE, 2011 AND WILL BECOME MANAGER OF  FACILITIES AND  MAINTENANCE AT EAGLE WINDOWS AND DOORS IN DUBUQUE.

A RURAL MAQUOKETA BUSINESSMAN, MICK CLARK, WAS AIRLIFTED TO UNIVERSITY OF IOWA HOSPITAL YESTERDAY AFTERNOON AFTER A TREE FELL ON HIM ON HIS PROPERTY.      THE ACCIDENT HAPPENED ABOUT 4:30.
HIS SON CHECKED ON HIM A COUPLE HOURS LATER  AND DISCOVERED WHAT HAD HAPPENED.    SHERIFF RUSS KETTMANN SAID HIS INJURIES ARE SEVERE, BUT NO CONDITION REPORT WAS AVAILABLE TODAY.

THE SIGN IS UP, MOST CONCRETE HAS BEEN POURED, A RETAINING WALL IS GOING UP AT THE SOUTH EDGE OF PROPERTY....IT WON'T BE LONG AND
THE KWIK STAR WILL BE OPEN, SOMETIME IN EARLY OCTOBER.

TWO VEHICLE ACCIDENT SUNDAY MORNING.    RONALD HORAN, 51, OF MAQUOKETA WAS STOPPED AT THE LIGHT AT PLATT AND WESTERN AVENUE WHEN JOSHUA HARPOLE, AGE 24 OF MAQUOKETA, DRIVING BEHIND, COULD
NOT GET STOPPED.     $3,000 DAMAGE TO BOTH VEHICLES AND NO
INJURIES.

DEWITT'S FIRST TWO WINS IN HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL MAY HAVE TO BE
FORFIETED, AS THEY USED A PLAYER MORE THAN 4 QUARTERS IN
SOPHOMORE AND VARSITY GAMES THE SAME NIGHT.   IF SO, MAQUOKETA WOULD PICK UP A WIN.    THE DECISION IS EXPECTED SOON.
DEWITT FOUND OUT IT HAPPENED AND REPORTED THE INCIDENT TO THE BOY'S ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION.    I'LL KEEP YOU POSTED.

LOTS OF WORKERS ARE AT THE FORMER  TRUCK STOP ACROSS FROM WAL MART, REMODELING IT INTO THE OTHER KWIK STAR FOR MAQUOKETA.
NO INDICATION AS TO WHEN IT WOULD OPEN.   YESTERDAY, THEY  POURED
CONCRETE ON THE NORTH SIDE,  ENLARGING THE PARKING LOT THERE.

MAQUOKETA IS A BUSY CITY THESE DAYS!

HAVE A GOOD NIGHT AND WEDNESDAY!
