RIGHT NOW, AROUND 3 O'CLOCK, BIG HEAVY SNOWFLAKES ARE COMING DOWN
IN MAQUOKETA.
BUT, IT IS TOO WARM FOR THE SNOW TO STAY. WHEN IT GETS COLDER TONIGHT, IT WILL STAY AND WE MAY GET 4 INCHES. TOMORROW BACK UP TO 34 AND MELTING.

STATE SENATOR TOD BOWMAN OF MAQUOKETA WILL PRESENT A PEN USED BY GOV. BRANSTAD TO SIGN LEGISLATION PROVIDING TUITION ASSISTANCE FOR NATIONAL GUARD MEMBERS......THE PEN GOING TO A MAQUOKETA NATIVE WHO IS USING THE BENEFITS TO ATTEND COMMUNITY COLLEGE. SPC COYLA CLARK OF MAQUOKETA, A FORMER HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT OF BOWMAN'S, WILL MEET WITH THE SENATOR IN THE RECEPTION AREA OF THE CLINTON COMMUNITY COLLEGE SATELLITE BUILDING IN MAQUOKETA AT 11:00 A.M. TOMORROW
MORNING. SHE RECENTLY RETURNED FROM A TOUR IN AFGHANISTAN WHERE SHE SERVED WITH THE 2ND BRIGADE COMBAT TEAM OF THE 34TH
DIVISION OF THE IOWA NATIONAL GUARD. SHE IS NOW A STUDENT AT
NORTHEAST COMMUNITY COLLEGE IN PEOSTA. SENATE FILE 2007 PROVIDES
AN ADDITIONAL $1.3 MILLION IN THE IOWA NATIONAL GUARD'S TUITION
ASSISTANCE EFFORT, WITH A BENEFIT TO SOLDIERS AT IOWA'S UNIVERSITIES OF UP TO $1,300 PER SEMESTER IN ADDITIONAL AID.

A "FOR SALE" SIGN WILL BE PUT UP AT MAIN AND PLEASANT, THE SITE OF THE
MAJOR DOWNTOWN FIRE. THE SIGN SAYS "AVAILABLE FOR REDEVELOPMENT" AND GIVES THE SIZE OF THE LOT AND THE CITY'S PHONE
NUMBER. THE NON-PROFIT GROUP "MIDAS" WILL SHARE THE $400 COST OF THE SIGN. MIDAS OWNS THE PROPERTY RIGHT AT THE CORNER OF MAIN
AND PLATT AND THE CITY OWNS THE REST, A MUCH LARGER LOT.

JASON TURNER, AGE 39, OF MAQUOKETA, WAS SENTENCED TO 10 YEARS IN PRISON ON CHARGES OF CONSPIRING TO MANUFACTURE A CONTROLLED
SUBSTANCE: METHAMPHETAMINE. THE JUDGE SAID HE WILL BE REQUIRED TO SERVE ONE-THIRD OF THE SENTENCE. HE WAS ALSO ORDERED TO PAY FINES OF $2,500 AND $1,262 FOR VICTIM RESTITUTION. HE WAS ARRESTED IN AUGUST OF LAST YEAR ON RURAL 35TH STREET.

JADE BAXTER, AGE 3, DIED FEBRUARY 9TH IN LAKEWOOD, WASHINGTON.
THE SERVICE WILL BE AT LAKEWOOD TOMORROW AT 11. SURVIVORS INCLUDE HER PARENTS, CHRISTINA AND STEVE BAXTER AND HER GRANDMOTHER, EDNA REUTER OF MAQUOKETA.

"DARBY" CALLAHAN, AGE 87, OF CASCADE AND FORMERLY OF BERNARD, DIED
TUESDAY AT HIS HOME. THE FUNERAL SERVICE WILL BE AT 10:30 SATURDAY MORNING AT THE CATHOLIC CHURCH IN FILLMORE. HE WAS A FARMER AND INSURANCE MAN. SURVIVORS INCLUDE HIS WIFE, LaVONNE AND EIGHT SONS, INCLUDING TOM CALLAHAN OF MAQUOKETA AND PAT CALLAHAN OF ANAMOSA AND FORMERLY OF MAQUOKETA AND ALSO FOUR DAUGHTERS AND 33 GRANDCHILDREN.

YESTERDAY, I WROTE OF THE DEATH OF DORIS BROWN.
HER FUNERAL WILL BE IN FORT DODGE THIS SATURDAY AFTERNOON.
TODAY, I LEARNED THAT PRIVATE BURIAL WILL BE AT MOUNT HOPE CEMETERY IN MAQUOKETA. AGAIN, THAT WILL BE PRIVATE BY THE FAMILY.
ALSO I WAS TOLD THAT A SHORT MEMORIAL SERVICE WILL BE HELD AT 5:00 P.M. FRIDAY, MARCH 2ND (A WEEK FROM TOMORROW) AT THE METHODIST CHURCH IN MAQUOKETA, WITH LUNCH AND FELLOWSHIP TO FOLLOW.
