JUST GOT BACK FROM THE WEEKLY ROTARY CLUB MEETING ABOUT AN
HOUR AGO. THE MEETING WAS CONDUCTED BY NEW PRESIDENT CONNIE
TJARKS AND FOLLOWED A DELICIOUS ROAST BEEF DINNER. THE GUEST
SPEAKER AT RIGHT IN PHOTO WAS MIKE NICKESON OF RURAL MAQUOKETA,
THE NEW MANAGER OF MAQUOKETA MUNICIPAL ELECTRIC LIGHT AND POWER.
HE STARTED HIS TALK BY GIVING A DEMONSTRATION ON HOW MUCH ELECTRICTY IS USED TO FOR A REGULAR BULB AND ONE OF THE NEW
CURLY BULBS YOU SEE AT WAL MART OR GASSER'S TRUE VALUE. ROTARIAN
(CPA ) JOHN GILROY READ THE METER WHILE EACH BULB WAS LIT.
THE WINNER, NO SURPRISE, THE NEWER MODEL BY AT LEAST AN 80% SAVINGS.
AND HE GAVE ALL KINDS OF INTERESTING INFORMATION ON ELECTRICITY
AND HOW IT RELATES TO MAQUOKETA'S PROBLEM OF..... "HIGHER COST
ELECTRICITY THAN WE WOULD LIKE". HE HAS LOTS OF IDEAS AND WE
SHOULD SEE LOWER BILLS SOMETIME DOWN THE ROAD. HE WOULD BE
GLAD TO SPEAK TO ANY OTHER ORGANIZATION AND YOU CAN JUST CALL
HIM AT HIS OFFICE IN CITY HALL. SUBSTITUTE WIND POWER FOR THE
CITY? USE THAT CHEAP WIND? COULD BE DONE. BUT WOULD PROBABLY
COST A HUNDRED MILLION DOLLARS TO DO IT HERE IN THE TIMBER CITY.
FORGET THAT IDEA! BUT, HE BELIEVES THE PROPOSED WIND TURBINE
AT THE YMCA WILL PAY OFF AND BE GOOD FOR THE CITY.
HE KNOWS THE ELECTRICITY BUSINESS! LEARNED MUCH WHILE WORKING
MANY YEARS FOR ALLIANT ENERGY. HE HAS A BIG CHALLENGE HERE!
BUT, DID NOT KNOW THAT MMEU HAS $6-MILLION DOLLARS IN THE RESERVE
ACCOUNT! INTERESTING MONTHS AHEAD ... AND TRY ONE OF THOSE
NEW CURLY BULBS SOON. BUT, DON'T THROW THEM IN THE TRASH CAN!
AND TRY NOT TO BREAK ONE...THEY HAVE A GAS INSIDE! NOT GOOD FOR
YOU,BUT THE GAS WON'T KILL YOU!

IF YOU HAVE DRIVEN THE ROAD (AND MOST OF YOU HAVE)...WHEN
YOU CAME CLOSE TO THE RESTAURANT, ON THE HILL ON RIGHT YOU
MIGHT REMEMBER SEEING A FAIRLY NEW METAL BUILDING ALL ALONE
ON THE HILL. THIS SMALL BUILDING OWNED BY JIM VON MAUR OF BETTENDORF, WAS DESTROYED BY FIRE. FIRE CHIEF MARK BECK SPECULATED THE BUILDING MAY HAVE BURNED ALL NIGHT. THERE WAS NO WATER AND NO ELECTRICITY TO THE BUILDING. THE CAUSE OF FIRE HAS NOT BEEN DETERMINED. THERE WERE TWO UTILITY VEHICLES INSIDE THE BUILDING. MAQUOKETA FIREMEN ANSWERED THE CALL AND BALDWIN FIREMEN WAS CALLED, BUT TURNED BACK BEFORE THEY ARRIVED.

88 TODAY.
NO RAIN YESTERDAY OR LAST NIGHT, EVEN THOUGH THERE WAS A 30%
CHANCE WE WOULD GET SOME.
NO RAIN IN FORECAST FOR REST OF WEEK.
WE NEED SOME.

THE MAQUOKETA TREE BOARD MET AND WILL BE RECOMMENDING TO THE FULL CITY COUNCIL THAT THE CITY SELL "LITTLE BEAR PARK" TO THE MAQUOKETA SCHOOL DISTRICT.
IT IS RIGHT NEXT TO BRIGG'S ELEMENTARY SCHOOL AND NEEDS NEW
PLAYGROUND EQUIPMENT, IF AND WHEN THE WOODEN PLAYGROUND IS TAKEN OUT BECAUSE OF AGE. IF THE SCHOOL OWNED IT, THEY COULD
BUILD A NEW PLAYGROUND USING LOCAL OPTION SALES TAX FUNDS. THE
TREE BOARD MEMBERS SAID THE SCHOOL IS THE PRIMARY USER OF THE
PARK NOW. THE CITY HAS NO FUNDS FOR A NEW PLAYGROUND, WITH AN
ESTIMATED COST OF $150,000. THE CITY WOULD SELL THE PARK FOR
$1. THE SCHOOL BOARD HAS NOT BEEN OFFICIALLY CONTACTED BY THE
BOARD OR CITY OFFICIALS ABOUT THE IDEA.
IF THIS PLAN WILL NOT HAPPEN, THE TREE BOARD MEMBERS SUGGEST
FUND-RAISING BE STARTED FOR A NEW STRUCTURE, WOOD OR OTHER
TYPE PLAYGROUND.
ALSO AT THE MEETING, CITY MANAGER BRIAN WAGNER SAID HE HAS
DRAWN UP A PROPOSAL FOR DEMOLITION OF ITEMS AT THE OLD POOL SITE.
THAT TOPIC, THE OLD POOL, WILL BE ON THE AGENDA AT A JOINT MEETING
BETWEEN THE TREE BOARD AND THE MUNICIPAL ENTERPRISES COMMITTEE.
HIS PROPOSAL CALLS FOR REMOVAL OF SELECTED STRUCTURES AT THE OLD
POOL SITE SUCH AS THE BATH HOUSE, CHEMICAL BUILDING, FENCING,
CONCESSION STAND BUILDING AND STORAGE SHED. THE POOL ITSELF
WOULD NOT BE DEMOLISHED. ONE PROPOSAL CALLS FOR FILLING IN MOST OF THE POOL AND THEN USING IT FOR ICE SKATING DURING THE WINTER.

THAT'S IT FOR TODAY.

85 TODAY....NO RAIN...MAYBE SOME RAIN TODAY.
IF NO RAIN TONIGHT...NONE IN FORECAST FOR THE REST OF THE WEEK.
WE NEED A LITTLE RAIN.

THE DENNY TABOR BARN JUST NORTH OF BALDWIN BURNED DOWN LAST SATURDAY MORNING.
BRYAN TABOR WAS PUTTING SOME BIG ROUND BALES IN IT AND APPARENTLY A SPARK
FROM EXHAUST STARTED THE FIRE. HE TRIED TO PUT IT OUT, BUT THEN CALLED THE
FIRE DEPARTMENT.

AN ACCIDENT SATURDAY AT THE BRAD DEERY SERVICE GARAGE. A WOMAN FROM CUBA
CITY PULLED INTO THE GARAGE, APPARENTLY HIT THE ACCELERATOR INSTEAD OF
BRAKES AND HER VEHICLE RAN INTO A MILES, IOWA WOMAN WHO WAS AT THE
SERVICE COUNTER. THE WOMAN FROM MILES WAS TAKEN WITH MAJOR INJURIES
TO THE LOCAL HOSPITAL. HER CONDITION IS NOT KNOWN.

THE "HOME INSTEAD" OFFICE HAS MOVED FROM NORTH MAIN STREET TO SOUTH MAIN
STREET JUST NORTH OF THE THEATRE, WHERE THE "BUGS" RESTAURANT WAS LOCATED.

HAVE A GOOD WEEK.

IN THE FRONT OFFICE, IS
KMAQ ENGINEER TOM MESSERLI. IT'S AN ARMSTRONG (UP TO 1,000 WATS) AND WILL BE INSTALLED AT THE KMAQ TOWER SITE
ACROSS FROM THE BRIDGEPORT CEMETERY A COUPLE MILES NORTHEAST OF MAQUOKETA. IT WILL BE MOUNTED IN A RACK OUT THERE THIS WEEKEND BY TOM.
THE ONE IT WILL REPLACE, ABOUT 25 YEARS OLD (A HARRIS), IS ABOUT THE SIZE OF A SIDE-BY-SIDE REFRIGERATOR. QUITE A REDUCTION IN SIZE OVER THE YEARS. THIS ONE
WILL BE MORE ECONOMICAL USING LESS ELECTRICITY. THE SOUND SHOULD
BE BETTER AND IT SHOULD TAKE OUR SIGNAL OUT A LITTLE FARTHER TOO.
THE OLD ONE IS STILL OPERATING, BUT TOUCHY AND HARD TO FIND PARTS FOR.
