TODAY...HIGH ONLY AROUND 80.

PLAY 2 MORE GAMES.
SOMETIME TONIGHT AFTER 7:30, I WILL COME BACK TO THE OFFICE AND GIVE
YOU, HERE, THE SCORE.
THE PRESTON BOYS PLAY TOMORROW NIGHT AND IF THEY WIN, THEY ALSO
WILL GO TO STATE.
LAST NIGHT, DEWITT UPSET #1 RANKED DAVENPORT ASSUMPTION, HERE IN
MAQUOKETA, AND DEWITT WILL PLAY AGAIN TOMORROW NIGHT, HERE, AND
IF THEY WIN, THEY WILL BE GOING TO STATE.
THE MAQUOKETA VETERANS OF FOREIGN WARS (VFW) O'CONNOR-REGENWETHER

NIGHT AT 7 P.M. THE VFW POST HOME HAS BEEN SOLD, SO THE MEETING
TOMORROW NIGHT WILL BE AT THE EAGLES CLUB ON EAST PLATT STREET.

AND ALWAYS AT THE EAGLES CLUB.

COMMANDER.....DENNIS VOY, SENIOR VICE-COMMANDER.....ROY FRANDSEN,
JUNIOR VICE-COMMANDER.....MELVIN ZAMUDKA, CHAPLAIN .... JOHN McCRAY,

ANYONE THAT SERVED DURING A WAR OR CONFLICT OVER SEAS, CAN JOIN
THE V.F.W.
WHEN I MENTIONED MAQUOKETA SOLDIERS THAT WERE KILLED IN THE LINE OF DUTY IN VIETNAM, I DID NOT MENTION RON STEIN. SOMEONE CALLED THIS TO MY ATTENTION. RON STEIN GRADUATED FROM MAQUOKETA HIGH SCHOOL BUT
IN THE NEW WEB SITE I MENTIONED A COUPLE DAYS AGO, HE WAS NOT LISTED UNDER MAQUOKETA. AFTER GRADUATING FROM HIGH SCHOOL, HIS PARENTS
MOVED TO WATERLOO AND SO RON IS LISTED ON THE WEB SITE UNDER THAT
CITY.
SOME PARENTS COMPLAINED LAST NIGHT AT THE MAQUOKETA CITY COUNCIL MEETING THAT THEIR CHILDREN WERE BEING HARASSED BY TEEN-AGERS
AT LITTLE BEAR PARK, NEXT TO BRIGG'S ELEMENTARY SCHOOL IN MAQUOKETA.
ONE PERSON CLAIMED GIRLS WERE BEING RAPED AND THE TEENS WERE SMOKING POT. ONE MOTHER SAID HER SON HAD BEEN BEATEN UP FOUR TIMES.
ANOTHER SAID WHEN PARENTS DID SOMETHING TO PROTECT THEIR CHILDREN,
THE TEENS BEGAN VANDALIZING THEIR CARS AND HOME. WHEN ASKED
BY THE COUNCIL WHY THEY HAVE NOT REPORTED MANY OF THE INCIDENTS
TO POLICE, THE ANSWER WAS THEY ARE AFRAID OF RETALIATION.
POLICE CHIEF BRAD KORANDA SAID HE'S AWARE OF SOME INCIDENCES IN THE PARK AND THEY ARE PATROLLING THE AREA MORE. HE SAID INCIDENTS ARE NOT HAPPENING ALL THE TIME, BUT ALL TIMES OF THE DAY AND NIGHT, MAKING IT DIFFICULT FOR POLICE TO SEE THE ACTIVITIES. HE SAID IT IS NOT HAPPENING AFTER CURFEW.
MAYBE TV CAMERAS ON THE PARK WOULD HELP?
SHAD FLIES ON THE SAVANNA-SABULA BRIDGE CAUSED A MOTORCYCLE TO SKID
YESTERDAY MORNING. NICE LIVING ON THE MISSISSIPPI, EXCEPT DURING
SHAD FLY SEASON.
FIREMEN HAD A SHORT NIGHT. THE FIRE DEPARTMENT WAS CALLED TO THE
HUSCO INDUSTRY BUILDING IN THE SOUTH INDUSTRIAL PARK AT AROUND 4 THIS MORNING. THEY FOUND STEAM COMING FROM A PIECE OF EQUIPMENT, BUT NO FIRE. THEY SPENT AN HOUR AT THE INDUSTRY.
NANCY AND I STOPPED AT THE FAIRGROUNDS SUNDAY NIGHT AND MADE A CLOSE INSPECTION OF THE NEW BEER GARDEN BUILDING, NOW CALLED VOLUNTEER
HALL. NAME NOT UP YET. NICE BUILDING. GOOD IDEA. WILL DEFINITELY
BE USED AT FAIR TIME AND PAY FOR ITSELF.
WASHINGTON STREET IN FRONT OF THE MAQUOKETA HIGH SCHOOL HAS BEEN RESURFACED WITH ASPHALT. JOB IS DONE. WHILE WALKING LAST NIGHT,
WE INSPECTED IT. LOOKS GOOD AND I'M SURE DRIVES GOOD TOO. A NEEDED IMPROVEMENT.
THIS SUMMER, THEY ARE DOING OVER MORE STREET CORNERS IN MAQUOKETA, TAKING AWAY CURB AND MAKING THEM WHEEL CHAIR ACCESSABLE.
WONDER WHAT PERCENTAGE OF THE CORNERS HAVE BEEN RE-DONE?
MAQUOKETA'S DOWNTOWN NEEDS A NEW LOOK....NO DOUBT ABOUT IT.
THE FIRE MESS CLEAN-UP HAS HELPED A LOT. BUT MORE IS NEEDED,
INCLUDING COMPLETELY DIFFERENT TREES. MOST NOW ARE WAY TOO
LARGE AND AND THERE ARE BARE SPACES WHERE TREES DIED. A FUND SHOULD BE STARTED TO DIG OUT ALL THE TREES AND PLANT A BETTER KIND OF TREE THAT
WILL LOOK GREAT AND NOT GROW TOO BIG. KMAQ WILL PUT IN $500 FOR
NORTH MAIN AND THE VOY THEATRE WILL PUT IN $500 FOR SOUTH MAIN.
SOON, I'LL BE GETTING THE SPEAKERS REPAIRED DOWNTOWN THAT WERE DAMAGED BY THE FIRE AND THEN WE WILL AGAIN HAVE MUSIC IN DOWNTOWN
MAQUOKETA.
NOW..... DOWNTOWN ASIDE.....MAQUOKETA IS FILLED WITH BUILDINGS
AND PARKS, ETC. THAT MAKE OUR TIMBER CITY MUCH NICER THAN MANY
OTHER CITIES OUR SIZE. NO CITY CAN BEAT OUR FIRE STATION, LIBRARY,
HIGH SCHOOL, YMCA, CITY HALL, COMMUNITY COLLEGE BUILDING, HOSPITAL,
COMMUNITY AUDITORIUM (OHNWARD), MUSEUMS(TWO), PARKS (FOUR),
RESTORED HOTELS (TWO) AND LETS NOT FORGET SOME GREAT CHURCHES TOO,
SACRED HEART, FIRST LUTHERAN AND UNITED METHODIST, ALL WITH
MODERN EDUCATION UNITS. JUST OUTSIDE THE CITY LIMITS, TWO INDUSTRIAL
PARKS, THE HURSTVILLE INTERPRETIVE CENTER, THE MAQUOKETA RIVER AND TWO FISHING PONDS (HURSTVILLE AND HORESHOE POND), A SOON TO BE IMPROVED- AGAIN MAQUOKETA AIRPORT, THE AREA'S ONLY DRIVE-IN THEATRE, AND I ALMOST FORGOT THE HALF-WAY AROUND TOWN PAVED BIKE/WALK PATH WITH
BENCHES. I MIGHT AD, MANY TOWNS HAVE NO RADIO STATION OR TRI-PLEX
THEATRE
UNFORTUNATELY, VISITORS DRIVE THROUGH MAQUOKETA, SEE DOWNTOWN,
AND HAVE NO IDEA THE NICE THINGS ABOUT MAQUOKETA.
WE'LL GET THAT DOWNTOWN GOING AGAIN! JUST WAIT AND SEE!
A DISAPPOINTMENT AT LAST NIGHT CITY COUNCIL MEETING. THE CITY
DOES NOT WANT TO CLEAN-UP AFTER THE FAIR PARADE. WANTS THE
FAIR BOARD TO DO IT. HOGWASH! DID NEW YORK CITY CHARGE THE YANKEES LAST YEAR AFTER THE TICKER PARADE? OF COURSE NOT! THE YANKEES
BRING MONEY TO THE CITY. THE JACKSON COUNTY FAIR BRINGS
MONEY TO MAQUOKETA. FOR 75 YEARS, THE STREET DEPARMENT, WITH THEIR MODERN STREET SWEEPER, HAS CLEANED UP MAIN AND QUARRY STREETS AFTER THE PARADE, AND THEY SHOULD CONTINUE TO DO SO. AND IF I WERE MAYOR, I'D PAY A LITTLE EXTRA AND HAVE THE CREW COME IN AFTER THE PARADE IS DONE SO THAT THE STEETS LOOK NICE FOR THE EVENING VISITORS AND FOR MORNING
TRAFFIC. AND REALLY, EXCEPT FOR SOME CANDY WRAPPERS, LEFT OVER
POPCORN, AND A FEW HORSE ----, THERE ISN'T THAT MUCH OF A MESS!
AND FINIALLY, DID YOU KNOW THAT HORSESHOE POND PARK'S RV AREA
IS NOT BEING USED MUCH THIS YEAR? THEY GOOFED IT UP, GREEDY FOR
MORE BUSINESS. WITH RV'S NOW IN THE MIDDLE, IT IS NOT THE PARK IT
WAS. LAST YEAR, FULL OR NEARLY FULL, WEEKENDS. THIS SUMMER, FIVE OR
SIX RV'S AT MOST. I KNEW IT WOULD HAPPEN AND TOLD MANY, BUT THEY
HAD TO SPEND THOUSANDS TO MAKE IT BIGGER. BUT BIGGER IS NOT BETTER!
HOPEFULLY, THE GRASS WILL GROW BACK AND RV-ERS WILL FORGET THERE WAS A NICE MIDDLE GRASS ISLAND IN THE CENTER OF THE CAMP GROUND.
SOMEONE CALLED ME LAST WEEK AND WANTED TO KNOW WHY MAQUOKETA'S
MAIN STREET HAS NO PAINTED CENTER LINE? GOOD QUESTION! ANYONE
KNOW?
PASS IN THE SONGBOOKS, THE SERVICE IS OVER AND YOUR PREACHER IS DONE FOR TODAY.
CHECK LATER TONIGHT AFTER 7:30 FOR THE GIRL'S SOFTBALL SCORE.
PEACE!
