CLOUDY AND 35 TODAY. MORE SUNSHINE TOMORROW.
OVER 40 COMPANIES TOOK OUT BID FORMS FOR THE DOWNTOWN FIRE SITE
CLEANUP, BUT, ONLY 7 SUBMITTED BIDS THIS MORNING. TWO OF THE SEVEN
WERE NOT CONSIDERED BECAUSE THEY CAME IN AFTER THE 11 A.M. DEADLINE.
FIVE BIDS WERE OPENED AND THE LOW ONE WAS FOR $341,000. THE HIGH
BID WAS $657,300. NO LOCAL BIDDERS. THE CITY MANAGER SAID THERE WILL BE ENOUGH MONEY TO DO THE JOB FROM CITY GRANTS. HR GREEN ENGINEERING
COMPANY WILL REVIEW THE BIDS AND MAKE RECOMMENDATIONS AT THE NEXT CITY COUNCIL MEETING. SO, WE HAVE THE BIDS BUT IT STILL COULD BE UP TO 60 DAYS BEFORE A CONTRACT CAN BE AWARDED FOR THE CLEAN-UP. THE STATE HISTORICAL SOCIETY HAS NOT SIGNED-OFF ON THE PROJECT AS REQUIRED BY LAW. THE HISTORICAL SOCIETY COULD REQUIRE SOME HISTORIC ARTIFACTS
BE SAVED DURING THE CLEAN-UP PROBLEM. THE BIDS ARE GOOD FOR 60 DAYS.
THE WAIT GOES ON....AND ON....AND ON.
JANE BENTROTT HEARD FROM HER SON PATRICK AGAIN TODAY, WHO LIVES
WITH HIS WIFE IN HAITI. THEY NOW ARE STAYING IN A HOTEL ABOUT AN HOUR FROM PORT AU PRINCE. THEY WERE UNHARMED AS A RESULT OF THE TUESDAY EARTHQUAKE. THEY SCHOOL WHERE THEY WORKED AND TAUGHT WAS DESTROYED AND PATRICK AND KIM SPENT MUCH OF YESTERDAY AT THE SCHOOL HELPING DIG OUT BODIES AND FINDING A FEW SURVIVORS. MANY STUDENTS AND STAFF MEMBERS WERE KILLED. THE COUPLES THIRD FLOOR APARTMENT IS NOW ON THE SECOND FLOOR. MANY OF THERE BELONGINGS WERE INTACT.
THEY WERE ABLE TO RETREIVE A FEW ITEMS. PATRICK AND KIM ARE IN THE PROCESS OF ADOPTING A 14-MONTH OLD BOY AND THAT BECOMES THE MAJOR ISSUE FOR THEM PERSONALLY AND WHETHER OR NOT THEY WILL BE ABLE TO
LEAVE THE COUNTRY WHERE THEY HAVE LIVED AND WORKED FOR THE PAST YEAR.
