BEAUTIFUL DAY TODAY....HIGH OF 80.
AT AROUND 8:30 THIS MORNING, THE MAQUOKETA FIRE DEPARTMENT RESPONDED WITH 19 FIREFIGHTERS TO A HAZARDOUS MATERIAL INCIDENT AT THE REAR OF
THE MELLING CYLINDER SLEEVE COMPANY LEASED BY PLASTICS UNLIMITED OF PRESTON. A LID HAS BLOWN OFF A BARREL OF AN UNKNOWN PRODUCT AND SMOKE CAME FROM THE CONTAINER. THERE WAS A STRONG CHEMICAL ODOR.
DUE TO THE SUBSTANCE BEING UNKNOWN, THE DAVENPORT HAZARDOUS MATERIAL TEAM WAS CALLED IN TO ASSIST. PERSONNEL FROM PLASTICS UNLIMITED
CAME TO THE SCENE AND SAID THE BARRELLS HAD BEEN ON SITE FOR SEVERAL MONTHS AND CONTAINED RESIDUE FROM A FIRE AT THEIR PLANT AND WAS
BEING STORED UNTIL AN INSURANCE SETTLEMENT COULD BE REACHED.
CREWS MINIMIZED THE HAZARD WITH ABSORBENT MATERIAL AND THE AREA WAS CLEARED AFTER ABOUT 4 HOURS.
THE RATES AT THE HOSPITAL IN MAQUOKETA WILL BE INCREASED BY 3.5 PERCENT BEGINNING JULY 1. THE RESULT WILL BE AN INCREASE OF $140,000 IN REVENUE.
COMMERCIAL INSURANCE INCREASES ARE ONE REASON FOR THE RATE INCREASE. AND, NOT ENOUGH REVENUE IS RECEIVED BY THE HOSPITAL FROM MEDICARE AND MEDICAID.
ALSO THIS WEEK, THE HOSPITAL PURCHASED TWO AMBULANCES TO REPLACE
TWO OLDER ONES. SOME GRANT MONEY WAS RECEIVED FOR THE PURCHASE.
THEY ARE GETTING TWO BETTER RIGS (NOT NEW) FOR THE PRICE OF ONE NEW
AMBULANCE. TOTAL COST, $175,809.
AND THE HOSPITAL IS GETTING CLOSE TO FINDING A NEW SURGEON, AND
MEDICAL ASSOCIATES IN MAQUOKETA IS TALKING WITH AN OB DOCTOR CANDIDATE
TO COME TO MAQUOKETA. BOTH ARE VERY MUCH NEEDED IN MAQUOKETA.
THE MAQUOKETA HOSPITAL SURGEON IS RETIRING AND THE OB DOCTOR HAS
ALREADY RETIRED.
ENJOY THE NICE WEATHER AND COME BACK TOMOROW.

YESTERDAY WE GOT UP TO 91, SHORT OF THE 92 RECORD.
TODAY WE GOT UP TO 84 (LATE THIS MORNING) AND THEN WE HAD OUR FIRST
SHOWER AROUND NOON AND CLOUDY AND THUNDER AND LIGHTNING AND
LIGHT RAIN THIS AFTERNOON. MORE RAIN TONIGHT AND TOMORROW.
THURSDAY SHOULD BE NICE AND THEN GOOD WEATHER FOR THE REST OF THE
WEEK AND THE MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND. NO MORE 80-DEGREE WEATHER FOR AWHILE.
THE HURST HOTEL APARTMENTS WERE EVACUATED THIS AFTERNOON AFTER A FIRE ALARM ALERTED THE MAQUOKETA FIRE DEPARTMENT. THERE WAS NO FIRE.
AFTER A SEARCH OF THE BUILDING, FIREFIGHTERS FOUND NO PROBLEM.
THEY DID REPORT SMELLING SOMETHING HOT ON THE THIRD FLOOR, BUT FOUND
NOTHING.
THE CITY OF MAQUOKETA RECEIVED THE GO-AHEAD FROM THE STATE HISTORIC
PRESERVATION ORGANIZATION TO DEMOLISH THE CORNER BUILDING IN DOWNTOWN MAQUOKETA AHEAD OF SCHEDULE. IN FACT, IT COULD COME DOWN WITHIN TWO WEEKS. G & B CONSTRUCTION, THE CURRENT CLEAN-UP CONTRACTOR, SAID THEY WILL CLEAR THE BUILDING OF ASBESTOS IN A COUPLE PLACES AND THEN
TEAR DOWN THE BUILDING FOR $42,000. IT WILL BE PAID BY MIDAS....THE CITY'S ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT ARM THAT OWNS THE BUILDING. THIS WAS GOOD NEWS AT LAST NIGHT'S CITY COUNCIL MEETING! WE WERE PREPARED TO HAVE THE FIRE DEBRIS CLEANED UP AND SEEDED AND THEN LATER IN THE SUMMER,
HAVE A MESS ALL OVER AGAIN WHEN THEY WOULD TEAR DOWN THE CORNER
BUILDING. BECAUSE HE WON'T HAVE TO COME BACK AGAIN WITH EQUIPMENT,
THE CONTRACTOR IS DOING IT FOR $10,000 LESS.
DARYL ELSNER, AGE 57, OF MAQUOKETA, DIED YESTERDAY AT UNIVERSITY HOSPITALS IN IOWA CITY. THE FUNERAL WILL BE THURSDAY MORNING AT 10:30 AT THE MILLER-LAW-JONES FUNERAL HOME IN PRESTON. SURIVORS INCLUDE
HIS WIFE LORI, ONE DAUGHTER, AND HIS MOTHER, KATHERINE ELSNER OF
MAQUOKETA. BURIAL WILL BE IN SACRED HEART CEMETERY IN
MAQUOKETA.
JUST A REMINDER AND A NOTE FOR NEW READERS TO THIS SITE, I DO NOT INCLUDE MAQUOKETA DEATH NOTICES ON THIS DAILY REPORT .......FROM CARSON OR LAHEY FUNERAL HOMES IN MAQUOKETA. THEY BOTH HAVE GOOD WEB SITES. SO, FOR THEIR OBITUARIES, YOU CAN PUT THEIR WEB SITES UNDER FAVORITES AND CHECK THOSE SITES DAILY FOR DEATHS. BUT, IF SOMEONE DIES WITH SURVIVORS
IN MAQUOKETA, BUT ARE NOT AT EITHER OF THE LOCAL FUNERAL HOMES, I
WILL PUT A BRIEF NOTE ABOUT THE DEATH HERE, AS I DID FOR THE ELSNER
DEATH ABOVE. BUT, I DON'T GET THEM ALL. AND IF I FORGET ONE, JUST
EMAIL ME AND I'LL INCLUDE IT ON MY DAILY REPORT THE NEXT DAY.
THANKS FOR CHECKING IN.

CLOUDY TODAY....MISTY THIS MORNING. LOOKS LIKE IT WILL CLEAR UP A BIT BEFORE THE DAY IF OVER. IN THE 80'S TOMORROW AND UPPER 80'S SUNDAY AND MONDAY.
FACT IN THE NEWS TODAY ... IT WILL TAKE 750 BIG LOADS OF FILL TO FILL UP THE

WAGNER SAID THERE IS CONCERN ABOUT THE CORNER BUILDING STILL STANDING. HE SAID THERE IS A HOLE IN IT AND THE CITY ENGINEERS WILL BE TALKING WITH THE EPA AND SHIPO
TO SEE IF THEY CAN TEAR DOWN THAT BUILDING SOON BEFORE THE FILL IS BROUGHT IN NEXT TO THE BUILDING. THAT WOULD BE GOOD IF THEY COULD GET APPROVAL
TO TAKE THE BUILDING DOWN NOW INSTEAD OF LATER THIS SUMMER. THE OWNER OF
THE SMALL SHED BETWEEN THE CLEANUP SITE AND THE MITCHELL MILL DECIDED TO ADD SOME DECORATION TO THE AREA. MICHELLE FLAGEL SAID SHE MADE A LARGE CARPENTER WHEEL QUILT BLOCK TO PUT ON THE SIDE OF THE BUILDING.
IT CAN BE SEEN FROM MAIN STREET. I'LL GET A PICTURE OF IT. SHE AND HER HUSBAND ARLYN COMPLETED THE WOODED QUILT BLOCK THEMSELVES. IT IS MADE OUT OF WOOD AND HAND PAINTED.

LOTS OF NICE HOMES IN THE LITTLE TOWN NOT FAR FROM MAQUOKETA. DARCY BENTON WAS FROM ELWOOD AND WAS NAMED MISS IOWA MANY YEARS AGO. CLICK ON PHOTO TO ENLARGE IT. LOOKS LIKE CROSSING MAIN STREET AFTER A RAIN MIGHT HAVE BEEN A LITTLE MUDDY.

LAST NIGHT, DRIVING INTO MAQUOKETA FROM THE SOUTH, I NOTICED A BRIGHT
LIGHT AHEAD. BEING THE ACE REPORTER I AM, I DROVE TO IT AND HERE IS WHAT I FOUND. PHOTO ABOVE. CLICK-ON PHOTO TO ENLARGE IT. A BRIGHT LIGHT
WAS USED SO PAINTERS COULD PAINT (WITH A ROLLER) THE NORTH SIDE OF THE
HUGE "FAMILY DOLLAR" DISTRIBUTION CENTER BUILDING. WHITE AND BRIGHT.
I BELIEVE THE BUILDING IS ABOUT 8 YEARS OLD. AND DRIVING IN THE PARKING LOT, I FORGOT JUST HOW HUGE THE BUILDING IS.....AROUND 1-MILLION SQUARE FEET.
AND THE PARKING LOT HAD LOTS OF EMPLOYEE CARS FROM ALL AROUND THE
AREA. I GUESS THE MAIN SHIFT IS THE LARGEST AND THE NIGHT SHIFT, STILL
BIG AND SOME WORK A THIRD SHIFT. LAST TIME I HEARD, OVER 350 WORK THERE.
SO, IT HAS REALLY BEEN A GOOD ADDITION TO MAQUOKETA. THEY ALWAYS HAVE
AN AD IN PAPER FOR HELP AND AT VARIOUS PAY SCALES, STARTING CLOSE TO $10 PER HOUR TO START. THEY HAVE A FAMILY DOLLAR RETAIL STORE IN MAQUOKETA. PLUS, WE HAVE A DOLLAR GENERAL STORE AND A DOLLAR STORE DOWNTOWN....IN ADDITION TO WAL MART. THE ONE DOWNTOWN HAS NOTHING PRICED OVER A DOLLAR. SO... LOTS OF PLACES TO BUY SOME TOILET PAPER. THE THREE DOLLAR STORES DO NO....NO ADVERTISING ON KMAQ. NEVER HAVE! WE GET SOME ADVERTISING FROM WAL MART. IF TWO DOLLAR BILLS WOULD BE MORE POPULAR, I MIGHT OPEN A TWO-DOLLAR STORE AND YOU COULD BUY NONE OF MY FANTASTIC SPECIALS UNLESS YOU PAID FOR IT WITH A TWO-DOLLAR BILL.
AND RIGHT NEXT TO IT, I WOULD OPEN A "BIG-T-TURKEY ONLY RESTAURANT".

80 DEGREES IN MAQUOKETA TODAY.
A LOT DONE AGAIN TODAY IN THE CLEAN-UP OF THE FIRE MESS. THE WALLS
IN THE BACK OF THE FURNITURE STORE, IN THE PHOTO I TOOK OVER THE WEEKEND,
WERE KNOCKED DOWN TODAY. BIG CHANGE. MAIN STREET WILL BE CLOSED
FOR THE REST OF THIS WEEK NEAR THE CLEAN-UP AREA SO THEY CAN
DISCONNECT PERMANTLY THE WATER AND SEWER LINES THAT WENT TO THE
BURNED DOWN BASEMENTS. FORGOT TO TELL YOU.......LAST WEEK THEY
FOUND WATER RUNNING FROM A BROKEN PIPE IN ONE OF THE BASEMENTS AND BELIEVE THAT WATER HAS BEEN RUNNING SINCE THE FIRE.
THE PLAYGROUND EQUIPMENT IN LITTLE BEAR PARK WILL BE REPLACED WITHIN 5 YEARS. THAT DECISION WAS MADE LAST NIGHT AT THE MAQUOKETA CITY
COUNCIL MEETING. THE 18 YEAR-OLD PARK IS WEARING OUT. REPAIRS WILL
BE MADE WHILE PLANS FOR A NEW PLAYGROUND ARE MADE AND MONEY
IS RAISED. IT IS EXPECTED TO BE A $100,000 OR MORE PROJECT.
LARRY GIBSON, AGE 55, OF ELWOOD AND FORMERLY OF MAQUOKETA, DIED
IN A ONE-CAR ACCIDENT AT 1:30 THIS MORNING ON HIGHWAY 136 AT 130TH STREET NEAR ELWOOD. HE FAILED TO NEGOTIATE A CURVE, WENT INTO THE DITCH AND ROLLED AND WAS EJECTED FROM THE CAR.
A BREAK-IN AT B & G AUTOMOTIVE IN HURSTVILLE LAST NIGHT.
TAKEN, CASH AND OTHER ITEMS. A $2,000 REWARD IS BEING OFFERED FOR
INFORMATION LEADING TO THE ARREST OF THOSE RESPONSIBLE.
THANKS FOR CHECKING IN.

THE CLEAN-UP OF FIRE DEBRIS CONTINUES TOMORROW IN DOWNTOWN MAQUOKETA.
HERE YOU SEE THE BACK WALL OF THE FURNITURE STORE STILL STANDING. IT WILL PROBABLY BE KNOCKED DOWN AND HAULED THIS WEEK. AND THE BUILDING
IN BACK, WITH SLANTED ROOF, IS THE BUILDING THAT THE DNR WOULD NOT LET
LOCAL AUTHORITIES TAKE DOWN AND REMOVE YET. IT WILL BE TAKEN DOWN
AFTER ALL REQUIREMENTS ARE MET, SOMETIME THIS SUMMER. TOO BAD THERE HAS TO BE THE DELAY ON IT. ON THE CORNER TO THE LEFT OF THIS PHOTO IS
THE OLD GRAIN MILL. HOPEFULLY, IT WILL ALSO BE TAKEN DOWN SOMETIME. THE BIGGEST SURPRISE LAST WEEK WAS THE AMOUNT OF CARPET, VINYL AND OTHER FLOOR COVERING MATERIALS THAT WERE FOUND, MOSTLY INTACT, IN THE FORMER
BREITBACH FLOOR COVERING BUILDING. CLICK-ON PHOTO TO ENLARGE IT.
